8mon 17d ago in offbeat@lemmy.ca from www.independent.co.ukHow are American tourists (more specifically northwest US) viewed here in Victoria and Vancouver Island?
1y 1mon ago in victoria@lemmy.caThere is definitely an undercurrent of anger/disappointment towards the USA and Americans, but it's nowhere near the point of being hostile towards American visitors. No one is going to be chasing you out with pitchforks. Parts of the Island (and Victoria in particular) have big tourism industries and would be more than happy to have you spend your money and support local Canadian businesses.
The other comments have touched on it, but I think a couple of things to be aware of are 1) be polite/respectful, and 2) leave politics at the door. From your post, you're obviously not a Trump supporter, but I think it applies to both sides. Obviously we don't want to hear people talking about 51st state bullshit or wearing MAGA hats, but I think Canadians are equally tired of the "sorry about Trump" sentiment as well.
Hope you have a good trip! Sproat Lake is an amazing spot. You just missed them moving the Martin Mars bombers!
Google’s ‘Secret’ Update Scans All Your Photos
1y 3mon ago in technology from www.forbes.comIt doesn't show in the app drawer, but I found it via the all apps in Settings.
Go to the Settings App > Apps > "See all XX apps". It's called Android System SafetyCore, so it should be close to the top of the list. Tap on it and select Uninstall.
I'm curious about this. I've got a Pixel 6 and noticed that the battery started going to shit about a month or so ago? I couldn't find an install date for SafetyCore, but it was listed in my apps. I've uninstalled it now. It'll be interesting to see if that was causing it.

How do you feel about the outcome of the US election?
1y 7mon ago in canada@lemmy.caNumb. Sad. Mostly numb.
I was cheering for Kamala. I wanted the US to succeed. She had the big rallies, the celebrity endorsements, the polls were saying it was neck-and-neck. It looked like sanity was going to prevail. Then Trump just basically sweeps it and it's like...oh. It's easy to call the Americans "stupid" or whatever insults I've seen flying around the internet, but there was a vote. He won the vote. Over 72 million people think that Trump and the Republican ideology lines up best with their ideology. Who am I to argue with that? I don't agree with it, but I guess that's democracy in action. Regardless of what lies were told or what disinformation was spread, people overwhelmingly went out, voted for ol' Donny, and this is the result. That's how she goes I guess...? I don't fucking know anymore dude.
My heart absolutely breaks for the people of Ukraine. I'm sure they'll lose their US support come January. They don't deserve that.

2y 1mon ago in wallpapers@lemmy.ca from sh.itjust.worksHey dude - I won't remove this post because I'm a little late to the party and it's received a good number of upvotes, but in the future, please be mindful of the sidebar rule: "Images should be wallpaper size (at least 1920x1080, or mobile equivalent)." 1200x829 is a fairly low quality image to use as a wallpaper. Thanks!

Have you ever coordinated your lock and home screen wallpapers?
2y 3mon ago in wallpapers@lemmy.ca from files.catbox.moeI've never really thought of coordinating them tbh but it sounds and looks like a neat idea. I've always kept the lock and home screen the same but lately I've been changing the wallpaper to roughly match the season. So right now it's a snowy mountains for winter.
