Google pays $68M to settle claims its voice assistant spied on users
4mon 21d ago in technology from techcrunch.comIt is kinda problematic that it matters how deep pockets of both parties are in court, isn't it? This system does not seem fair to me, unless fair means "the biggest guy always wins". Ahhh the American dream, how amazing...

Preparing for my country at war
4mon 29d ago in preppersI indeed understand I won't be able to stockpile food and water to hold out for years. I am wondering though what kinds of good I can stockpile that will become very "valuable" once war does come. I mean valuable in the sense that it brings me a lot of value to have, I do not want to get rich because of a war where people are dying.
I am thinking of ways of communication where I don't rely on a functioning government for instance (it is cheap to buy a radio now, compared to when a government blocks incoming goods).
Water filters might be good as well indeed, they last forever and will bring a lot of value when there is no water coming from my tap.
What else?
If WWIII broke out tomorrow do you honestly believe america would win?
4mon 15h ago in nostupidquestionsThe only winners will be the people selling the guns.
Oh no! Linus doesn't know AI is useless!
5mon 7d ago in programmer_humor@programming.devThe problem is that AI is not useless. It has a lot of other issues, but not that it is never a helpful tool.
Tell me what would you do?

How do I feel comfortable/safe going outside by myself after being so used to have parent(s) be with me outside most of my life?
5mon 7d ago in nostupidquestionsThis is such a foreign question for me. In the country I grew up in children are kicked out of the door to go and play outside as soon as possible (age 3 or 4? Idk, long time ago). My parents would give me rules like "don't cross the big road! And home by 6" and I would ride my tiny bike around the neighborhood together with my friends.
I think you'll just have to go out as much as you feel OK with. And maybe think of a plan B for when things do go wrong. Stay close to other people who can help out if something goes wrong, tell others where you are and when they should expect you back, take self defense classes, have a phone at the handy, etc.
How long have you gone without sleep?
5mon 7d ago in autism from lemmy.zipI get very grumpy and useless when I don't sleep. Tried a few times, things like a birthday party in my teens where we would play poker all night long, and a hackathon where we wanted to make the deadline. I try not to do it anymore, because nothing good comes out of my hands/mouth at some point.
Regarding the issue of being afraid you won't be back in schedule before school starts: i totally recognize this. I try to make an effort to plan enough time to wind down on Sunday evening (if i have to get up early again). No social media, no news, no action packed movies or tv shows, some herbal tea around 8pm, only a few lights on in the house, meditation a bit earlier in the day to clear the mind, start brushing my teeth on time (around 9-ish) and actually go to bed at or a bit before normal weekday bed time.
I don't always manage, but I do find i cannot sleep when I totally disregard these steps. I then just lay in bed being afraid i dont sleep wel enough and that makes it even harder to sleep.
Some thoughts that help me reduce stress:
"My body knows what to do and will make sure it sleeps when it really needs to. Worst case we can just try again tomorrow"
"It's ok to wake up in the middle of the night, that's just how sleep cycles work. Just go to the toilet for a bit and try to have another go. If it's thoughts keeping me awake, write them down so they can be handled later on"
Sleeping is important, but your body can handle quite a lot, so try not to worry too much.
Why didn't Venezuela move its capital further away from the ocean to make the government more resilliant to capitulation?
5mon 15d ago in nostupidquestionsI don't think an invasion of the most powerfull army in the world is something you can really prepare for in most cases. It costs way too much money.
What do you think ?🥰 [F] [OC]
