Signal Desktop without a smartphone, standalone version in development
1mon 14d ago in privacy@programming.dev from aboutsignal.comTo register on Signal Desktop, a phone number will still be required. However, this can be either a mobile number or a landline, including basic mobile phones or dumb phones. This will make Signal accessible to users without a smartphone.
What's the point? Something they don't understand is that phone verification only fucked up people, and that spams and big entities have millions of proxies and phone numbers to use and flood the network

Whats a privacy friendly way of learning a new language?
1mon 27d ago in privacy@lemmy.mlTry to decide what your threat model is. A language learning app (except harvesting traditional device id and such) doesn't reveal very important info to anyone.
The only know which language you learn and your approximate level. Sure that's better if there's a more private way of doing it, but the core principle of learning a language doesn't reveal very much.
