What is a router ?

2d 20h ago in nostupidquestions

Its a box that allows multiple computers (and phones etc) to be connected to each other in a network

That's a hub. Maybe an accesspoint.

If a computer wants to go through the router and onto the internet, then the router keeps track of which connected computer, asked for what Pc1 wants go to bbc.co.uk When it sends that request it keeps track that the response is passed on to pc1 , who requested it

Routers in general are stateless. Your description is more like a stateful nat-device/firewall.

And then pc2 and pc3 dont need to know about it

Did I say hub? Switch I mean!

Yet I fully agree with you!

no screensharing seems to work, at least none of those i tested, not even jitsi meet. i get the point of "being maintained". but but what does it actually do better?

Idle windows is so damn heavy on io :(

Didnt find any /s there. That's one of the reasons why I dislike docker, it supports not understanding stuff. But then that's just me, who wants to understand stuff. Enabling less tech savvy ppl is also great I guess.

I said 'vote the lesser evil' you opposed. So I'd say you said that.

Oh lol, didnt notice the age of your post :D makes the community look rather dead :(

Congrats on the setup, sounds solid!

I allow my internal api calls to be clear text & direct... Not perfect but its a tradeoff. Allows me to not let the proxy access everything.
