The problem is that you're looking for an easy system when none exists. You filter down to simple, easily by-passable rules, instead of curating your own system, and as a result, you've limited your community to news sources that new generations (and many older gens like myself) no longer pay attention to. It's like polls that rely on cold calls, when only the boomers bother to actually answer the phone and waste their time on them.

Hell, I don't even want Twitter because it's just a bunch a two-sentence short-form nonsense from a known Nazi lover that has already forced any good elements of their community to Bluesky and Mastodon. But, outlawing video out of politics, when a major chunk of the population is getting their politics from video, is fucking wild!

Face it... YouTube is the new media, while old media has been enshitifying itself for the last few decades. Even previously trusted sources like Washington Post and NYT have really gone downhill over the past 5 years.

Shows like Last Night Tonight and some of the other late night TV shows, broadcast important political issues to the general public, those are now in jeopardy because old media doesn't fucking like it when they are called out, or they call out their Dear Leader Trump. And you know what? The best place where those ideas get broadcasted is not on TV... it's YouTube!

Mastodon isn’t the entirely of ActivityPub apps. There's also PeerTube, Pixelfed, Loops, Micro.blog, Flipboard (145M users), Misskey, and many many others.

• Lemmy doesn't work with Loops
• Lemmy doesn't work with Micro.blog
• Lemmy doesn't seem work with Flipboard (though, I have no idea what the community URL would be)
• Ditto for Misskey

Is there any ActivityPub app that Lemmy is compatible with, or is it broken for all of them? Why pretend that it's part of a big Fediverse, when a vast majority of these instances are broken to us? (I'm not picking on discuss.tchncs.de, but you can plug in any Lemmy server you want and see the same kind of problems.)

The fact that Lemmy adopts solutions that are different from other software, but still more in line with Activitypub, shouldn’t be considered a problem.

You can have this stance, and be a purist about the RFCs and how the protocol is supposed to work. And you can push for these standards on your own platform for Lemmy.

But, at the end of the day, you still have to deal with the warts of other protocols and write the custom code it takes to bridge one app with another app. And then be thankful that you are not trying to bridge together an entirely different standard and are just trying to smooth over some structural differences in implementation.

Mastodon isn't the entirely of ActivityPub apps. Lemmy doesn't seem to work with any of the ActivityPub apps, and nobody is trying to fix that problem.

It's not a "Fediverse", if it's not federated everywhere.

None of this would have been necessary if the platforms allowed native interoperability with a protocol that is literally designed to be interoperable.

Literally the only person willing to take over from Moffat was Chris Chibnall, and only then because the BBC told him they would have to cancel the show otherwise.

Maybe that's the point where they should have realized they drove the series off the cliff. I know getting local talent is limited, but if you can't get a showrunner for Doctor Fucking Who, it's a lost cause.
