Questions on Wood Siding Repaint For Hail Damage
11mon 20d ago in homeimprovementI would recommend power washing to remove any peeling paint and grime. Then sand/fill/sand the necessary spots. You can safely paint over the old paint as long as the old paint's adherence to the wood is good and your new paint will stick to it. If in doubt start with a primer coat. The primer coat would probably be recommended for the patched areas anyway.
Safe to run a box fan face down?
1y 23d ago in homeimprovementI have been running a cheap box fan face down on a Corsi-Rosenthal Box for a year now with no problems. Anecdotal of course.
Renovating a converted patio
1y 1mon ago in homeimprovementI had a similar screened in area on my back deck. Only difference is it was on an elevated deck. I tore out the wainscoting, rewired the electrical, added structure for windows and installed double pane windows and doors, had the entire structure spray foam insulated... walls, under floor, and ceiling, laid plywood floor over decking and hung drywall. Added a split A/C unit, recessed lighting and a fan. All pretty simple since the structure was already there and pretty sound. I did end up going back and adding additional spray in insulation in the attic space above the addition. If I were in your case I would do the same, but it sounds like you already have the windows, but I would put 2 inches of foam board plus vapor barrier over the concrete to insulate the floor. Not idea to have a step up into the room, but concrete is a terrible insulator, I know this from finishing my basement which was all cendor blocks and concrete.

Why choose DRM?
1y 6mon ago in audiobooksI will have to look at Libro.fm a little closer. I thought they were just free books, I guess I had them conflated with librivox.org where I regularly go to get older books that are in the public domain. One down side that I saw was that the price per credit was about 50% higher than what I am paying, but if they have the same selection of popular books I will consider them before my next credit renewal.
What do I look out for regarding mold inside of an older house (1972)?
1y 7mon ago in homeimprovementControlling the humidity in the house with a dehumidifier is a good thing and a great start. Check for any active leaks, specifically in any places where you have spotted water damage. Check for any drywall that is soft, specifically around the top or bottom of the drywall. Go outside and check the caulk around windows, the window ledgers, especially if the ledgers use any mortar, and flashing around the roof. You should take a hose and lightly spray, simulating rain and wind, with someone inside checking for leaks. Since you have a basement, look for any areas that might hold water around the foundation, check your gutters to make sure they are in good working order and the drains are directing the water away from the foundation and in a direction where the water can drain away from the house. You didn't mention if your bathrooms vent to the outside (and not just into the attic either), if they don't you will want to either vent them outside or include that in your dehumidifier/AC calculations. Check your dryer vent to make sure it is clean and vents outside as well.
If you can stop any leaks you find, control the humidity in the house, and wash with soap and water any exposed surfaces that may have had mold growth, I think you should be fine. I recommend you purchase some mold test kits and check for mold in the air just to be safe.
