I don't think that schools (at least in America) teach enough about Eugene V. Debs. Despite his failed presidential runs, this guy was one of the most popular politicians of his day. His imprisonment for sedition caused literal riots across the country. His release from prison was attended by over a million people. He founded the Industrial Workers of the World. Some of my favourite quotes of his that stick with me:

I am not a Labor Leader; I do not want you to follow me or anyone else; if you are looking for a Moses to lead you out of this capitalist wilderness, you will stay right where you are. I would not lead you into the promised land if I could, because if I led you in, someone else would lead you out. My preference for winter and hatred of the sun aside, I think this makes a lot of sense. For one thing, it allows them to be a lot more competitive with leagues like the WSL and the Premiere Ligue which are also winter leagues because to sign and trade and loan players across the pond doesn't require a switch in schedule for them.

International play is also organized around winter leagues with the main pushes for events like the World Cup and the Olympics occurring in the summer. I think it's better as a league to not take 3-4+ weeks off for those events every few years or to do like MLS does and ignore international breaks and play with subpar teams during that time. I also think it's a better deal for the national team players because it spreads the soccer out across the year better and for the non-national players there's a more cohesive period of time where they're playing and where they're not playing.

And then to bring it back to weather and climate, I know some fans may not enjoy the cold as much, but if I were a professional athlete, I'd prefer playing 90 minutes of elite sports in Houston during February instead of July

The people essentially have been demanding it. As several others have mentioned in this thread, 70-80% of the public supports universal healthcare in some form. For the nitty-gritty, basically 50 years ago and earlier, extremely wealthy people realised that their preferred policies weren't especially popular with the general public. They identified that their main issue was that what they had was money, not people. So they embarked on a decades long quest to give money the same (or greater) political power as individuals, culminating in the Citizen's United Supreme Court case. I bring this up because it essentially means that the People demanding it doesn't matter, because while there may be a couple hundred million people asking for it, there's a couple hundred billion dollars asking to never do it. It's gotten so bad that there's a kind of perverse, Stockholm Syndrome effect starting to happen to. In 2016 there was a big dust-up during the Democratic Primary where the Culinary Union in Las Vegas/Nevada didn't want to endorse Bernie Sanders, the most pro-Union candidate in decades, essentially because medicare-for-all would remove health insurance as a bargaining chip

I hear almost exclusively people referring to the country as "America". This was actually a very conscious shift at the turn of the 20th century for people in public life to refer to the country as "America" instead of "the US" or "the United States" as we ..... acquired overseas territories and weren't a country only of United States anymore
