Eurovision 2024 Grand Final Live Thread

2y 1mon ago by lemmy.world/u/Korne127 in eurovision

Just like with the semi-finals, this is the live thread for the Grand Final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2024.
As there is (to my knowledge), no Lemmy equivalent to https://reddit-stream.com/,the best alternative is refreshing the website about once after each song. This should still be okay for now as this community is relatively small.
Sort by New to see the newest comments or additionally click on the Chat button to break the replies apart and even show the newest replies.

Thanks to @You@feddit.de, there are some links for the Grand Finale:
The Grand Finale Livestream on YouTube: https://youtube.com/watch?v=ckGRHJ-J9G4

National broadcasts:

Perhaps one of these might not be geoblocked, but not guaranteed)

And some background information:

Highlights from the Dutch broadcast (paraphrased):

  • "The EBU reminded us that we're contractually obligated to do this broadcast."
  • "Instead of the Netherlands we skip to Isreal, good thing they are completely uncontroversial."
  • "Everyone makes mistakes, the EBU also knows a lot about that."

I see, they dont fuck around, as they should

The head of their broadcasting company said “fuck the ebc” on video before the final.

Not the head of broadcasting, the commentator said that.

Thanks for the correction. All of the info I have seen supported my statement, but I am in the states and getting info third hand.

Good. They should even increase it (no matter how much it is right now)

The booing on israels jury was heavy

Also every time Israel gets points!

They got a fucking lot of them tho wtf

Every user can vote 20 times. It just takes dedication and maybe some rigging to get that many points

Yeah what? Like it was a grand tune but absolutely was not expecting that from the public vote.

Edit: Just saw the result of the Irish public vote and Israel got 10 in fairness with Croatia getting a well deserved 12.

Germany Public Vote awarded israel 12 points...

Dutch Public Vote as well

Same for the UK

:o

Danish public vote awarded 8 points to Israel. What a fucking disgrace.

Come to think of it, in Denmark we could only vote by SMS and we know how easily phone numbers are spoofed. Maybe someone with time on their hand could correlate the numbers between SMS voting and votes to Israel if it's possible to get those numbers.

Switzerland is just really great. How he’s able to sing while leaning backwards and spinning on the disk, it’s insane. And additionally to that, it’s the hardest song of the year (I’d even say by quite some margin). His singing talent is insane and I love the song itself as well. It’s just beautiful.

Definitely getting the love from the jury vote.

Deserved in my opinion. And they seem to be Conchita's favourite too.

Yea, I was looking for someone to point that out. That’s almost opera-level singing.

I don’t understand why this person is getting so much hate. I admit, the song is not to my personal taste, but I I was wow-ed by his vocal abilities.

Ireland is quite unique and should get extra points for a their original performance.

After their performance, I feel so... peaceful. Just as if some dark spirits left my body, idk

Successful exorcism

Lordi won, so Bambie Thug has a chance. I'm guessing top five, though they're my favorite.

My vote is for Ireland or Estonia, I m not sure ýet

Wait for Croatia

Croatia was whopper.

The long extensive loud booing was sooo nice to hear; it made me so happy.

Switzerland deserved it, im suprised about germany, ireland deserved a bit better and i think fuckery happened with israel. Really bummed about netherlands tho.

If Netherland wouldn't have happened, this would have been such a great ESC. But yeah… they just needed to fuck it all up.
Honestly, while I'm happy about Switzerland (and Germany tbh), I'm just… still feeling awful, because I feel so sorry for Joost, as this was so important and emotional to him with his parents. I really despise Österdahl and the EBU right now for taking that from him.

I dont get why the jury from netherlands was banned aswell, felt really awful

Correction from comments: Not banned but stepped down, still felt wierd

As far as I know, they weren't banned, there was just no-one willing to be a spokesperson lol. But this is just what I heard from a comment in a thread, so don't take it as verified.

Nikki de Jager (who was supposed to be the spokesperson) said on TV that it didn't feel right to hand out points. The Dutch broadcaster then told the EBU to just figure it out themselves.
Käärijä (Finland) also stepped down but got replaced, and Alessandra (Norway) already stepped down earlier because of Isreal.

Were they banned? It's just announcing the twelve-point vote, I assumed they didn't want to participate anymore after being disqualified.

Austria is peak 90s eurodance

I wanna like her so much and I really love the song, but unfortunately her live singing performance is mediocre at best :(

People told ORF in the last few years that our acts aren't good at stage performances, so they chose a performer/choreographer this year haha

Yea but "ram di dam dam" is just too ridiculous imo. Love the show, the song, dance and everything but that text sounds like satire of the genre

Easy to sing along and speaking of ridiculous: heard of Scooter? How much is the fish?

Ofc i heard of scooter

Germany already got more than 0 points!
This is a weird ESC

Fuuu can't vote Dutch, what's the next best thing?? *throw dart... Germany!!

Baby Lasagna channeling Rammstein

Felt that as well, the song slaps.

And also Joost had his own Rammstein moment...

Congratulations Nemo!

They got crowned by the Witch!

I saw that. It was very cute and he took the crown on stage with him. Lovely stuff. They seemed to have a genuine bond.

Can we please talk about how switzerland slaps?!

I hope either Ukraine or Switzerlans wins

Absolutely. Nemo deserves a spot in the top five, maybe a winner.

I’ve never been that sad at the beginning of an ESC before :(

I went grocery shopping today and got myself some extra treats for today. The theme they have in common: Comfort and unhealthy.

Germany got points by three juries in a vote?! This is actually really nice :0 :D

117 points and 12th place in the end. Not too shabby.

Germany is getting points, someone explain this.

A little bit of consolation after the horrible horrible Netherlands disqualification :(

I wonder how the voting would have been different with Europapa. I think Croatia would have considerably less televoting as many people switched from Netherlands to Croatia (a post suggesting to do that on Reddit literally has 10 000 upvotes). But otherwise, I don't really know what would have been different.
I'm still really heartbroken for Joost and I definitely hope that this all will be resolved with strong consequences for the EBU.

The final running order has 26 entries although i am sure i read that it would be 25 after the NL disqualification.

I dont see NL on the list though. How can it be 26 without NL?

Edit: nr 5 is removed but not replaced.

They didn't change the numbers of the contestants. I guess for technical reasons and to keep confusion small, after the numbers were already announced.

Armenia has a much better performanca than in the semi

Yayyyy Switzerland gets so many jury votes, my last call was that he'd be the jury winner and so far it looks good :D
And as he's my favourite tonight, this actually makes me really happy right now :D :D :D I'm crossing my fingers for him :D

Hello and good evening.

Could have done without AIBBA and I'm underwhelmed by Loreen.

Did anyone catch what the Ukrainian artists shouted at the end?

Sorry didn't catch that. Felt like they lowered the mic for the end of the Irish one too.

My tier list:

Top

  • Ireland. Bambie Thug is a legit talent beyond this competition. I look forward to what they do after this.
  • Spain. A classic. Top five, possible winner.
  • Switzerland. Fun mix of genres, great performance.
  • United Kingdom. The song grew on me, and the staging is still amazing.
  • Croatia. Energetic, though there are a couple better performances in this competition.
  • Greece. Sounds like Mediterranean reggaeton in the best way. Is it my imagination, or was the camera work better during the semis?
  • Netherlands. It wasn't the very best, but it was a first-tier Eurovision song.
  • Estonia. Lots of fun.
  • Norway. Great song, great staging.
  • Armenia. Fun song, energetic performance.

Mid

  • Lithuania. Upper mid tier. Decent dance song, great performance. I like the outfits too.
  • Luxembourg. Upper mid tier. Solid song, decent staging
  • Sweden. I like it better the second time around, at the top of the mid tier.
  • Finland. They're trying something fun, at least
  • Ukraine. Another song that grew on me, but still mid-tier.
  • Serbia. A very good, though not outstanding, song.
  • Italy. Nice beat, awesome graphics, bland song and dancing.

Lowest

  • Austria. Nice boots she's wearing though.
  • Portugal. Nice masks on the dancers though
  • Cyprus. Unimaginative.
  • Slovenia. Ok song, but there's a lot of competition.
  • Israel. Everything else aside, it isn't that great of a performance.
  • Germany. ISAAK is giving it 100% but it isn't that great a song, and the staging is bland.
  • Georgia. This is fine.
  • France. He has a great voice, though.

I'm slightly offended (and very amused) that your bottom tier is called Germany.
I mean it's true, but don't kick us when we're down

Edit: Please change it back! It was the perfect Freudian typo

Oops formatting error. (I can't change it back, bc I'm part German descent, and those ancestors are already very disappointed in me, I'm sure.)

I think the barrel on fire is a homage on the Frankfurther Hauptbahnhof

Ahahaha

I'll just use your comment to post my favourites as well:

  1. Ukraine
  2. Armenia
  3. Italy
  4. Georgia
  5. Luxembourg

Lets see if any of them has a chance to win. (And luckily I'm German, so I don't need a rank for Isaak, but hostely it's not a bad song.)

We seem to have quite the same taste, how do you feel about Estonia, Switzerland, or Slovenia?

Estonia and Switzerland are great!

Can't fault that top tier list. Lots of bangers.

I hope Armenia do well, feel like Croatia has it sewn up though.

Thought the Irish one was incredible but conscious of bias.

Austria’s vocals were better than in the semi-final
And France was amazing and extra-ordinary as it has been in the semi-final

This aged… terribly

Feel bad for norway and estonia

What's going on?!?!?!
This really means people rallyed around Croatia (and maybe some around Israel or Ireland too, in general the popular ones)

I expected Ireland to do a little better on the public vote but happy to see Croatia get the public vote win. Superb tune and performance.

Fuck yes!!

Ugh, once again the public's favourite is shoved aside by the jury's favourite. What's the point of voting when the jury gets to decide every time anyway?

Every time?!

Source for the graphics

I am genuinely sorry if your favourite didn't make it, but that just… happens for most people when there are many songs. My favourite in 2021 was Switzerland, who won the jury vote but didn't win overall. But like yeah, Maneskin won and it's fine, because it's not just about me. Keiino was my favourite in 2019 as well, but yeah, Arcade was also a great song and a winner. And today, Nemo certainly deserved to win.

Alright not every time, but it's still dumb that it's not just democratic. Last year was also the jurys favourite despite Finland winning the public vote.

I don't feel like they deserve to win when it's not the people's favourite. I don't like the jury system. They werent even the public's number 2.

Honestly, it's not dumb. Televoting is super biased towards running order, just see how the same 10 songs last year got ranked in a completely different order in the semifinals and the finals by televoting only:

It's completely different, some places are basically upside down!

Also, there is just a reason the jury got reinstalled. While the televote is important in my opinion to also allow different songs that are experimental or just fun to have success at ESC, jury vote is equally important to really take a value at the singing quality and difficulty.
Just look at last year: Spain with one of the hardest songs and an insane singing quality got almost no points from the televote because it's not directly catch on the first listen, the jury was definitely necessary. Also, Poland (with a cheap summer song) got higher than Portugal.

The jury fixes those mistakes of the televote and the televote fixes the mistakes of the jury that sometimes doesn't care so much for different fun songs.

Edit: Fixed the image

Televoting is super biased towards running order, just see how the same 10 songs last year got ranked in a completely different order in the semifinals and the finals by televoting

Do we have any evidence that the jury's vote is not similarly biased? It may as well be. Also tbf many people only watch the finals so it could also be explained by a difference in demographic.

jury vote is equally important to really take a value at the singing quality and difficulty

I disagree on this point - the jury might be musical professionals, but they are not the authority on what is good or bad music. That is a personal judgement and the only way to agree on a winner is a democratic vote.

A difficult song does not equal a good song and an "easy" song can still be a masterpiece. I don't think you should be awarded points for singing a difficult, yet bad, song.

Do we have any evidence that the jury’s vote is not similarly biased? It may as well be.

Yep. Here is a literal study coming to exactly that conclusion: https://doi.org/10.4324/9781003188933-12
But also, you don't really need a study for that. It's pretty clear that people who just see songs and a recap and vote for what they have in their memory are more susceptible for it than a Jury that needs to literally rank every single song in a list from 1 to 25/26 in different categories.

And the image I posted above definitely shows how much running order impacts the televoting, as well as this image does (from when the running order was drawn at random):

That is a personal judgement

I'm sorry, but I just disagree. With a relative of mine having studied musical theory for years, I definitely know that there is a huge difference between opinions of random people and people who literally have spent years with the theory and can judge the quality of singing and the challenges of a song in completely different and finer ways. There definitely is another level of appreciation.

It comes down to a philosophical disagreement on whether art has inherent/objective qualities or whether it can only be judged from a purely subjective perspective. I strongly lean towards the latter while you and the EBU lean more towards the former. I don't agree that there truly is a different level of appreciation (perhaps a different method of reaching that appreciation, but just as valid). I think we can only agree to disagree on such a fundamental thing.

What a nice, respectful disagreement to read. Genuinely.

Who was the public favourite?

Croatia

Only by 14 points in front of Israel though (337 vs 323 points)

Political asside, i dont think Israels song was good enough for that!

Very much agree. It was a fine song but the level it got in the public vote surprised me quite a bit.

From my perspective Croatia was streets ahead as both a song and performance.
