The US is too damn big and got populated too damn fast. You try coming up with 100 trillion place names in a couple hundred years without making any duplicates.
They even assimilated a ton of Native American names despite conquering and appropriating their lands. Goes to show how desperate they were for original names.

There's a Tokio, Washington. They got Santa in Idaho. Those are just the funny ones in my area I know about.
