This plant should not be thriving in this environment. It is growing on compacted oxisol in an area that gets over 4 metres of rain. Yet here it is, growing completely out of control. Nothing makes sense. Climate change?

Amazing, that this is a cactus. Does it even have spines? I knew that some basal cacti have leaves, but I thought they all have spines at last.

Yes, there are spines! The stem has spines, and even the fruits have spines of a different sort. They aren't the fine spines that you would find on something like an Opuntia, but they are little prickly things nonetheless.
