And while https://pawb.social/post/24205906is a news story, TowardsTheFuture's comment indicates that it was old news at the time of posting. So while this one is weaker the fact that they also do it for furry_memes leads me to believe that this is more of the same.

I wouldn't care if they were just reposting memes, it's whatever. But why copy someone else's self-posts and post them as their own? Like, what do they get out of doing this?
Its to make the community appear active at a glance. People are far less likely to join a community that has zero post activity since a large number of people lurk and the most surefire way to simulate post activity and ensure that the content is appealing is to mirror popular and active posts from already popular communities.
It's a bit like that thing where scientists put out fake decoy puffins to encourage other puffins to land on an island. Or how new cafes and coffee shops will sometimes hire or otherwise incentivise people to stay there all day so the cafe is never empty while they're still trying to drum up actual traffic
I mean, I get that, but why? I didn't ask out of an intent to name and shame, I just don't have any clue why someone would go to these lengths to make a couple new communities and astroturf them here. Lemmy doesn't have advertising, or any other kind of incentive to promote a community other than it being active. It's not every post from those communities they picked either, just ones that, at a glance, have passed a certain threshold of upvotes. So why would they be doing this? If you wanted to copy over a community entirely from Reddit, lemmit.online is a thing still. This took some work, and given the bursts of posts they're probably doing it manually.
It turns out that it's actually kind of well-intentioned. Granted, they asked a bunch of other subreddits as well, but they just look like someone excited about growing the fediverse. The only real issue I had was using a non-bot account for self-posts, since it made it seem like they were passing off all these experiences as their own. A note in the sidebar that these are intended to be Reddit backups and that posts are copied over probably would go a long way to preventing the confusion in the future.

Oh good detective work. Yeah, if they posted those with sources to the author it wouldn't be so bad. You could just say 'here's a post from reddit, what are your thoughts?'. But they purposefully hid the fact that the posts were copied which is super strange.
Yup, and never bothered to clarify even when responses were given or when explicitly called out on apparent contradictions. Reposting images or memes is one thing, since the image is the whole point, but I can't comprehend reposting personal asks from Reddit over to Lemmy. The entire point of a community like this would be to give help and answers to the actual OP, who in this case would never even see them.
These aren't stories, these aren't entertainment, they are (supposed to be) earnest questions people want answers to. I replied to a few of them assuming good faith, and received not a single word back. It's just lame, I thought they were honestly asking for some guidance initially.

As an update, just checked again and it looks like according to the modlog they are now actively deleting messages which point this out and link the original as spam. That is to say, instead of explaining themselves or considering why pawb.social members aren't thrilled with the /r/RealFurryHours post lifting, it is deliberately being obfuscated.
Sharing posts is normally fine, but this sort of deliberate attempt to pass things off as original, and also the subject matter of stealing other's personal concerns they want answers to feels very icky. There's no particular site wide rule I can point to, so really all I can say is any hope of that community growing to form fruitful discussion is entirely poisoned.
