It brings such joy to go against the grain.
In my opinion acknowledging flaws and trying to make your country better shouldn’t be seen as going against the grain, it should be considered patriotism
Cringing at the memory of things you did in the past is a sign you've learned better. And a reminder that you've still got work to do. Applies to countries as well as individuals.
