Why does "new replies" sort often put threads with zero replies into the sort?

I just follow directly what I'm given by the API. "New replies" sorts new posts to the top as well, even with no comments for some reason.

I believe the initial post counts as a reply.

That feels silly to me?

There is a lot of lemmy that feels silly.
