Wow Mr. is that a smile?
7mon 9d ago by lemmy.world/u/gibmiser in casualconversation@piefed.socialFucking coworkers talking about me in front of me.
"Wow you are smiling today! You never smile!"
"I know right! He always looks like he wants to kill himself!"
I have depression and I don't like being a gloomy fuck and I'm trying but goddamn if people saying shit like this doesnt make me want to stay home or go ahead and off myself jesus fucking christ. Are they oblivious or are they making fun of me to my face I don't know.
If they said that verbatim that is super unprofessional and highly inappropriate conduct for a workplace. Best way is to pull them aside and tell them in private that you don’t appreciate such remarks. Otherwise, in a functional workplace report it to a manager/HR. That second quote alone would be grounds for a review if not more. What a fucking psycho thing to say to a work colleague. It reeks of workplace bullying.

100% this. The 'functional' part being key, alas. Because HR can very easily not be functional and make one feels even worse when seeing it doesn't change shit to report those bullies.
I'll be the unwise advice commenter. Someone has to.
Wait until they say something intelligent. Wow, what an astute observation! You never talk about ideas. You usually just talk shit!
These people are adults? Jfc.
The vast majority of US "adults" never matured past middle school. This is par for the fucking course over here.
God thats sad, I'm sorry
Did you say any of this to them?
Not OP, but as someone also struggling with depression, no I wouldn't think that being treated like this would make me want to confront these people at all as much as the OP describes, just never show my face around them again. Depression makes you want to give up, not be fucking assertive. Criminy.
No, I've also struggled with depression, I completely understand why you wouldn't say anything. I was only wondering if they did, not trying to judge them. My sincere apologies if that tone came off.

Fuck those people, they sound like giant oblivious assholes. If someone jokes about you wanting to kill yourself, call it out right then, say plainly, "That's not funny, I have depression," or "Don't talk about suicide like it's a punchline." You don't owe them a smile and you don't owe them the labor of making them comfortable.
If it keeps happening, document it and talk to your manager or HR, or flat-out avoid those coworkers if you can. Take a mental health day if you need one. And most importantly, if any of this is making you actually think about hurting yourself, get help now. If you're in the US call or text 988, text 741741, or go to an emergency room. In the UK call Samaritans at 116 123. If you're elsewhere search for your local suicide crisis line or call emergency services.
You're trying, and that matters. Their comments say more about them than about you. Don't let them gaslight you into silence.
Gods, I hate that... if you don't walk around grinning like an idiot at all times people think YOU'RE the weird one. I ended up practicing my smile, then flashing it during work interviews and when I first go in to work in the morning. After that if they say something I'll just pretend like I'm deep in thought.
