What Did Y'all Buy on Black Friday?

6mon 20d ago by lemmy.dbzer0.com/u/pineapplelover in asklemmy

I bought my wife pregnancy clothing, and found out I’m having a girl!

Congrats!

Thank you!

For a moment, I was confused why you would buy your wife pregnant clothing before you knew she was pregnant with a girl.

... Almost like he had something to do with it

That's great man, what an adventure you're starting!

Thanks! I am so excited about it

Good for you guys!

Actually, technically she's having the girl. You get to be the pet dad. At least that's how it works with mine.

I got many tikits today from her. I got a sitting down tikit, a standing up tikit, a moving tikit, a tikit just for being daddy. Once I corrected her spelling I started getting tickets for other imaginary violations. And then she was done.

Nothing

Nothing fuck consumerism.

I didn't even pay for bus fare. I biked to work, biked home, and ate leftovers. Suck it, fake corporate holiday!

Take that, public transport system. You're not getting my money

/s

STEM toys for my neices and nephews. Especially the ones with religious parents.

I am their sciencefather

I remember having the snap circuit kits!

I bought kiwico last year and it has been kinda lame.

Yeah my son had this. He loves putting them together, but they fall apart so easily even after they increased their prices to compensate for their longer lasting builds.

Just a bit overpriced nowadays imo.

Well it was a regular work day for me, so I bought lunch

Nothing, and I don’t plan to buy anything except normal stuff through January, either. I’m not doing Xmas this year, so very easy to avoid the spend.

I would also like to unsubscribe from Xmas/the holidays. I do not consent!

Absolutely NOTHING!

  • Eggs
  • Cheese (Grated Mozarella and "Pizza Cheese")
  • Cream cheese
  • Pizza Dough (pre-rolled-out)
  • Tortelloni
  • Swabian raviolis
  • Tomato purée
  • Tomato paste
  • Sauce hollandaise
  • Red wine (for cooking)

Not goddamn thing. Best Black Friday ever.

Good luck.

I didn't need anything so I didn't buy anything. 🤷

Not a single thing

A box of 5x50 (metric) wood screws. Not because of black friday, but because I had ran out.

Nothing I would not have bought any other time.

I must admit I was a big spender. I was on the second last day of my cruise, so I went a little wild. I spent $2.55 on the Guitar Hero cabinet in the arcade. No regrets.

And how much did you spend on that cruise?

About $10! I was lucky enough to be brought by my aunt, so I only had to cover the room charges (taxes on a few drinks at port, and of course, Guitar Hero)

🤦🏽

Congrats on your vacation, I go on them also.

But you must realize bragging about not consuming when going on an environmentally disastrous cruise vacation is ironic, even if your aunt did the spending...

That was meant to be part of the joke. I definitely realize it's ironic, don't worry.

I bought a rock climb membership on sale. The next day, it was on sale for a cheaper price so I refunded and bought it again

Wow, I absolutely wouldn't have had the guts for that 🫢

Goodness gracious, the way everybody on Lemmy claims to be anti-capitalist, the majority of answers better be "nothing".

Edit: ITT: people offended at being lumped in with the rabble.

Even communists have to buy supplies

In my defense, I actually did have to get my prescription medications, but I didn't buy anything else.

Well, my answer is nothing, and as anyone who follows me knows, seeing me not buy any random novelty cutlery trash from China has certainly got to count for something.

I'm not anti-capitalist, I'm just content with the things I have.

a ton of users don't claim to be anti-capitalist.

being anti-capitalist is performative outside of those who are living off grid or dumpster diving anyway.

What a dumb comment. You can be against something and still be forced to use it.

so if you were against the Nazis but worked for them you weren't a Nazi?

lol that's an even dumber comment.

Nothing

I made no purchases. I don't need much more than groceries and I have leftovers still for a few days.

I didn't buy anything

Was that yesterday? Didn't go shopping yesterday.

Nothing, I don't exactly need anything at the moment. In fact I almost forgot Black Friday existed...

Nothing related to black friday as I only did groceries.

Nothing.

We're supposed to be holding a boycott until Dec 2nd.

Y'all are fucking pathetic who broke the line.

I never heard of this boycott. If it makes it any better, I didn't buy anything from a big business

First I've heard of one too. But too be fair I'm too poor to buy anything anyway

It's far more pathetic to set a deadline for your boycott than to buy something on black friday. You think your boycott has a meaning if you're that sad about it?

I've been boycotting all big companies for a year nonstop and your group can barely do it for a week before crying and just buying anyways

Hey dumbfuck

Its a general community boycott meant to specifically boycott black Friday and cyber Monday. Its part of larger boycotts, but specifically meant to boycott these events in particular.

And its a national boycott, not "my boycott".

Go fuck yourself.

Not a god damn thing

I was going to buy the Lego Star Trek enterprise, but it was sold out before I got there. Oh well, they saved me from myself with artificial supply restrictions.

Instead, I didn't buy anything.

nothing and fuck all of you for participating in this scam.

VPN.

(2-year subscription for Proton came to $71.76) I wasn’t planning on buying anything anyway but during these dark times, VPN is a necessity IMO.

Stayed home. (Except a regular walk around the neighborhood.)

Is this actually a specific day somewhere?

All the online shops I know are having "black Friday" for some weeks and I don't know (and don't care) when it ends.

Traditionally, Black Friday only meant that Friday after Thanksgiving, but as things started being more online-centric, I guess stores extend those sales

I bought a single €2 snack while walking through a Christmas market. Other than that, it was a day of riding public transit (monthly pass), walking through parks, and eating a packed lunch.

Out of pocket total: €2.

Sounds like a lovely day

I keep a wishlist of things I want/need with their regular prices marked. On Black Friday, I check that list to see if anything got discounted. More than likely, nothing is, because discounted products are usually cheaper variants, or already-expensive items marked up in advance, then dropped to regular price for Black Friday.

Nothing on my list was discounted this year. So I bought some games through the Steam Black Friday sale and called it a day.

I got a second hand ThinkPad W520 for about $30USD. I already have one, but this was too good of a deal to pass.

I got some Channa Masala at a local indian place but it wasn't on sale or anything

Some degreaser and penetrating oil for a small engine one of my kids is trying to repair.

Friday night, so I got some treats to eat while we watched TV at home. Milk, cheese, crackers, chocolate chip cookies, and ice cream.

A sausage roll.

An m8 and m10 bolt from ace hardware with corresponding washers. Big spender

Nothing because I don't care :)

Nice try, FBI

Burger buns. Salad greens. Tinned pineapple.

Tinned pineapple?

Yeah, pineapple pieces in tins.

As you already know, I love pineapples, but unsure about this so-called 'tinned pineapple'. You're not a fan of fresh pineapples?

I don't need a whole pineapple to cook a hawaiian pizza.

Certainly not, but you can use the leftover pineapple to make a cake, some soup, pineapple juice, a smoothie, some cookies, eating it raw, etc. Just something to have in mind.

Pineapple soup?

The sky is the limit

Pizza for pizza Friday.

Local store had 20% off video games, which isn't up to par with past Black Fridays, but eh, meh.

One cheap Christmas present and what will likely be my last Xbox game. (Halo Infinite, bookending Halo as my first Xbox game).

My router was flaking out so I bought some CAT6, I had forgotten it was Black Friday until I got to the store, but the place wasn’t noticeably crowded.

Also, though I have not paid for it yet, I dropped my jet skis off to be serviced and winterized.

Most notably a new pack of coffee filters.

Groceries

We're prepping for a baby who is coming soon. Had a list of baby stuff we were keeping an eye on to see if any actual lower prices came around. Found a handful of things at decent discount actually, but there's still plenty left on the list. Baby stuff is expensive...

find a baby or kids reuse store near you. often times you can find clothes, shoes, toys, etc still new in box or tagged for a couple $2-5 when new they sold for $15-30.

bonus, when you're done you can sell it back if it's still in decent condition.

kids go through clothes like crazy. no reason to spend $1000 a year on new when you can spend $100-200.

just don't buy reused car seats, stay away from anyone trying to sell you one too.

Thanks! We're trying to be smart about. We are also fortunate enough to have friends nearby who also recently had kids, so we've been able to borrow some clothes they've grown out of too.

Some soup ingredients at the grocery store that we didn't have quite enough of.

Bought some handmade Christmas ornaments at a locally owned gift shop and some jewelry at a locally owned thrift shop. Some for me, some for gifts. Nothing was on sale, I was just showing some visiting family what a cute little town I live in.

Oh, and we bought brunch at a locally owned brunch place. The protesters on the freeway overpass have been telling me to Boycott Big Business and Buy Local for about a week now, so I did as I was told.

Hmm... I think I ate blood sausage with lingonberry jam, potatoes and sauerkraut.

So that's about all I bought. No sale or anything.

I picked up about 20 books — a mix of novels and manga.

I also bought a BenQ GP520 projector,
and a few Anker items: a Nano USB-C hub, a Charging Station, and a PowerLine III cable.

Paid my water bill.

A drink and food at a local spot. Wasn't a black Friday sale or anything, but we stopped in.

Didn't chase any sales or buy anything of note. Don't need much.

Dog food and not a damn thing otherwise

A few beers at a brewery.

Got a new controller I have been wanting for a while at the price of my old one, except this new one has way more features than the previous one.

Gas

I got another ps5 controller, some coffee, some snacks, and a new bike headlight. most sales of stuff i wanted was like 10-20 bucks off, nothing significant. the coffee was the best deal, 30% off which saved me like $50.

I've been riding my euc and escooter a lot; especially for quick food runs. I picked up a cambro go (insulated pizza carrier) and a wide low profile steel tumbler in an attempt to address integral slurpee collapse. I've been trying to look for some elastic canvas bags but might need to go custom.

Integral slurpee collapse

Had a video game gift card and decided to use it yesterday to maximize what I could get. As someone who used to be crazy into video games I haven't purchased anything in a long time. I brought 1 game at the beginning of the year and that has been it. So the plan was to try and get a few things that ive missed for cheap. In the end I got 3 games which were all around $30 each with a buy 2 get 1 free. With the membership extra $5 off and $50 card i spent $8 bucks on them. Sadly this morning when I went to pop one in the idiot store clerk never put the dam games in the case! I now have to go back today and argue... I really hate stores these days.

waffle.

pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com A charging/data cable for my Sony NWZ-s639f mp3 player.

*it wasn't in a sale or anything, I just needed one and it was coincidentally black friday

Ham sandwich.

I have an event next week that I needed new dress pants for. I went to the store not even thinking about black Friday sales. Saw that I could get a suit jacket + pants for a bit more than what I expected to spend on just pants. Ended up buying two suits (I didn't own a suit beforehand and I'm at the age where I probably should have at least one) and some shirts.

A new shop vac because I happened to need it and it happened to be on sale.

$24 of gas for my car

Several beers and some snacks with my spouse at a local brewery

A chef salad and a calzone

Bunch of lumber and stuff I was already planning on buying as I finish my basement, like a laser level.

I got paid from a freelancing job so I bought my dad and sister heated vests for Christmas since they both are outside a lot and it snows here.

I my defense, I didn't even know it was black Friday. I just happened to have gotten paid that day

An excellent sausage and cheese toasted sandwich.

filen lifetime account cause I might need it in 10 years

Bag of coffee beans & toilet paper (1-12 pk)

We already had the post criticizing Black Friday. That was the place to virtue signal how you don't fall for consumerism traps. Yet here we are again with all those responses.

I thought my post did a better job of virtue signaling. This one seemed to lack the venom and vigor of contrarian support for the opposing opinion.

At least your post asked for those opinions. This one wants to explore what was bought and is answered by a bunch of unhelpful "nothing" comments with the occasional "and here's why no one should" thrown in.

Udemy courses.

I picked up eight feet of composite quarter round molding for $6 and a recessed light replacement part for $12. Had a productive Saturday.

Some Christmas gifts I WANTED TO BUY two weeks ago, but saw that they had jacked up the prices to have "sale" on black friday and so had to just wait.

I moght buy a TV, I still have to check the discounts

Eggs at $7.99/dozen.

what eggs are those. eggs at my store are 3/dozen. 6 if you get the ultra premium organic ones.

Admittedly CVS eggs, since that’s the only 24hr store near me and I was desperate

I bought some new games off Steam and some Magic the Gathering cards I wanted that were on sale.

Groceries. It's a long, boring story why I needed to shop for groceries yesterday morning, but that's what I did. At Walmart.

The place was a bit busier than on a typical weekday night, but nothing like I was thinking it would be. I was surprised, but pleasantly so. I guess a shitty economy, weeks of black friday sales, upcoming cyber monday, lack of decent discounts, and the shift to online shopping have reduced the crowding in stores on that one specific day.

Last night I looked around a bit online just out of curiosity. The sales and discounts were pitiful.

The only stuff that caught my attention were gaming related items, but nothing was compelling enough to actually purchase. The games are still on sale for a few more games, so plenty of time to change my mind. And for the controller, I figure I'll wait and see what the pricing is on the new Steam controller. There was a part of me that considered buying the PS5 controller now while it's on sale and returning it if/when the Steam controller comes out if I like that better. But then the color I wanted most was more expensive than the rest, so I said fuck it.

Poutine, been craving it for a few weeks

Not strictly necessary items, but not brainless consumerism (at least I don't think so). A few Christmas gifts for my husband–baseball caps from store that does made-in-USA reproductions of vintage minor league and negro league team caps. And some makeup and hair care products from a local business that I already use on a regular basis. I kept them hanging out in a cart from a few weeks ago to see if they'd do a sale.

Arduino Elegoo starter kit. It's a kit for beginners who want to learn robotics. I wanted to learn programming for fun since I recently took an interest in electronics/engineering because I wanted to craft things that move and build R2D2 and BB8 in the future. But to do that, I need to learn the fundamentals.

Not for black Friday but arrived on black Friday. Bought a Marshall kilburn iii Bluetooth speaker with 50hr battery. I really like it.

A 2026 diary

But also not because it was black friday
