In countries where cars drive on the right side of the road, why steering wheel on the right?

...And countries driving on left side of road, why steering wheel on the left?

Why can't cars have a center seat with steering wheel in the middle?

And why do different countries favor different sides of the road?

If you're in a middle seat you may not be able to see past the car in front of you, on either side.

Australia drive on the left hand side of the road, steering wheel is on the right. Puts you closer to the middle of the road, better able to see oncoming traffic. Vice versa for right-hand side road drivers with steering wheel on the left (eg USA)
