Amazon will offer DRM-free ePubs with its e-book purchases starting next year

Too late, Jeff.

Don't trust Amazon.

I already jailbroke my Kindle so...

One if the best decisions I ever made.

This is going to be a rug pull.

Guaranteed. The question isn’t if the rug will be pulled, it’s when and how.

I was thinking about this just the other day. I used to buy Amazon ebooks. I think I've spent probably around $200 on ebooks in 2025. I've been successful it not buying a single one of them from Amazon.

Amazon trying to take away USB uploading of files to Kindle was the push I needed to "fix" that for my device, now I can get ebooks from anywhere and upload them via USB.

Where do you buy them from? If I could get ebooks from somewhere like bandcamp, I'd be so happy

A number from Kobo, but many from the publishers themselves will sell the ebook directly. Many times DRM free too. Lots of Humble Bundle sets too. I just picked up the 14 Martha Wells books for $18.

Agreed, I usually am able to find the books on the publisher’s site, for me they’ve always been DRM-free. In the odd cases where that doesn’t work, I’ll usually just sail the seven seas for an EPUB version and buy the physical book to support the author.

I spent a lot on Amazon books in the past but when they removed the option to transfer books via USB I stopped almost entirely, and but my books from Kobo now.

My Kindle is jailbroken. I don’t need their permission or assistance to use/buy/acquire EPUBs.
