What is your choice for a dedicated Linux audio player?

6mon 3d ago by lemmy.world/u/DandomRude in asklemmy

VLC.

But then I'm one of those strange people who doesn't listen to music much, so maybe I'm missing a trick.

Been using vlc for.... 15 years? Maybe more!

I listen to music a lot, and I also just use VLC. I have a well-sorted media collection and just drag whatever files/folders I want into VLC.

mpv. I have very simple taste.

Same, but that's not a dedicated music player.

Same, but that’s not a dedicated music player.

Is it not? May I ask if there is a specific reason?

I will admit I also use mpv like my default video player, but it still is my default audio player and use it like one, with playlists and stuff like that ;)

A dedicated music player would not just play the file, but could organize, show album covers, etc. I don't use one, like you I use mpv for pretty much everything.

Thx, I had not considered those aspects.

Kind of splitting hairs there imo. MPV does show the album art if it is on the audiofile metadata for example. I think cmus would fail to be a dedicated music player given your definition.

It still clearly does all the "..,etc" that I mentioned. I don't have skin in this game. I think of a "dedicated audio player" as one that as, uh, dedicated to playing audio. cmus and the like sure fit that. I think of things that can play audio, but don't do much else other than playing other formats, like mpg123, mpv, vlc, et. al, as not falling into that category. Not that they have issues playing audio. Just a design thing.

Rhythmbox for me. I was using Spotify for a long time but I've been dialing that usage back a lot this year. Another factor was that I have an older PC and when I play games it uses more resources than I'd like. I took the time and setup my playlists in Rhythmbox and I've been happy. It's not winning any design awards but it does the job.

I've been happy with Strawberry so far. The default music player in Gnome is okay-ish but I wanted a music player that can be set up with multiple music folders and Strawberry can do that.

Fooyin's great so far.

That's what I use but honestly I find the UI frustrating. Its difficult to search and make playlists

I came over to Fooyin from Foobar2k, so the UI translated right over.

Strawberry or VLC. I wish someone would port Winamp but Strawberry is pretty close. I miss my skins. Showing my age here.

For clones of WinAmp for Linux, there's qmmp (which I use) and I believe some distros still have an xmms package (xmms2 is a bit of a different beast). xmms hasn't seen an update in a long time but like old versions of WinAmp it still works. Both of them have some support for classic WinAmp skins. Neither one supports the full feature sets of WinAmp such as the media library or video playback, so it depends on what parts of WinAmp you're looking for.

WinAmp also runs under wine and basic stuff works, but last time I tried it I ran into issues with some of the plugins and the basic stuff is covered by qmmp so other than nostalgia reasons I didn't really see much point in running WinAmp under Wine.

Linamp: It really whips the Alpaca's ass!

(I wish this was real, lol)

Feishin, connected to my jellyfin server.

I also use Feishin, but connected to my navidrome server lol. Its such a good looking music player

VLC forever and always

All the cool people use VLC

Feishin. It's a navidrome/jellyfin player.

I love it, because it has smart playlists that are actually smart! It lets me create "random" playlists from my music collection, in a way that works for me.

Strawberry, was the first one I got to work with my iPods and that's my main use case

I use Sayonara for my local music player.

Strawberry

Seconding this. I used foobar2000 until I switched to Linux, and Strawberry has been the best replacement I've found (actually better imo)!

Only downside is no DSD support.

mpd with rmpc - unix philosophy at work. Have been rockin it for 3 years now. probably gonna stick with mpd for the rest of my linux journey.

Same. I've tried dozens of music players, but I always return to mpd, though I use Cantata as my front end. And M.A.L.P. allows me to control playback from my Android devices.

I also quite like QuodLibet, but my computer has a bug where the music randomly pauses when using Gstreamer (which QL uses), so for the most part I use mpd.

Strawberry, Audacious, qmmp and Amberol are all decent audio players I have been happy with.

I started with Clementine for a few years, and then migrated to Strawberry, I love the mood bar.

I am still on Windows, but am looking to switch to Endevour OS next year or so...

I second Audacious, it's ALMOST foobar, the only thing it doesn't do is create a new playlist from a folder drag into empty space.

EDIT: also, I like to put it into the system tray

https://rmpc.mierak.dev/

Extremely ergonomic terminal music player.

Audacious

I use Strawberry. I like it's Dynamic Random playlist feature, and I can customise it if I want.

Amberol or gapless depending on whether I want to have a built-in library

Strawberry has been kind of buggy for me. I don't have an alternative player yet so I am looking for input here too.

Sayonara player on desktop.

Lollypop on mobile.

I feel like you just made that up.

HastaLavista on desktop

Locus in mobile.

I really enjoy Tauon.

Seconding Tauon!!

Strawberry. Layout is great. It's cross platform so it works on Windows/MacOS too.

I wish it had plugins like foobar though. I keep foobar for the ABX plugin when I encode music.

I used a few, but right now, I think I have Rhythmbox for podcasts, but Strawberry for music (432Hz shenanigans).

Gapless

Fooyin is my local player, it's basically Foobar2000.

Finamp is what I use to stream songs from my Jellyfin server.

I use YouTube Music installed as a brave app with ads block on. I'm always connected to internet so I save storage space and time watching ads.

PlexAmp

Basically ssh into the box in my workshop and mplayer my whole music folder on shuffle.

Cmus or mixxx

while not exactly Linux, i always stood by AIMP - it runs quite well through wine

You mean a dedicated hardware device?

No, just software that is specifically designed for this purpose, so less applications like VLC and more applications like DeaDBeeF (or MPD for multiple devices). I'm just interested in what people use.

The best looking and feeling music player I've tried is Aonsoku, connected to a navidrome server.
