I generally recommend fics written before season 4 of the show if they are following canon. I would also recommend reading the AUs because there are so many good ones
I never watched the series, but this author made me fall in love with them <3

@capetaun@feddit.it Tbh it's been a very long while since I browsed the series fics, so nothing I could recommend on those atm.

It's from Genshin Impact (a gacha game), Sara/Kokomi. It's very lore rich and it doesn't go exactly the way I expected/wanted but it's written so beautifully, the two of them are so heartwrenching and makes the world of the game really pop out to life better than the game itself.
I think it could be attempted without having played the game? It'll read like a magical feudal Japan kind of novel.
