What's your addiction?

3mon 16d ago by lemmy.world/u/Suck_on_my_Presence in asklemmy

"But it's impossible to be addicted to weed."

- People who don't realize you can be addicted to literally anything.

I knew a guy who was addicted to ibuprofen. He wasn't even taking it for pain.

16 year old me was addicted to one part of my own body. Escapism is a helluva drug.

Painkiller addictions are common

Not with over the counter NSAIDs

Half the girls in my high school were addicted to Tylenol

Are you sure it wasn't Tylenol with codeine?

If half the girls in my school were addicted to codeine, that would have been a major scandal, lives would have been ruined. This was treated more like a minor inconvenience, they all had low grade migraines they treated by popping tylenols all day long. To be honest I'd be surprised if some of them didn't fuck up their livers a bit.

Huh. Maybe there was some kind of environmental hazard in the school like mold

I honestly think it was a sign of the stress they were under. It was a private school and a lot of parents had unreasonable expectations for their children's, especially their daughters', performance.

I don't smoke anymore, but back when I was working as a line cook I used to smoke like a chimney. I'm real happy I stopped, my sleep took a while to get better but now it's way more restful then when I smoked. Weed is chill in moderation, not if it's your only way to relax after a long day of too many hours under high pressure.

Still get a bit of a craving every now and then, but I think it's just when I'm bored.

Blood clotting's mini-boss

My addiction ed for new techs that were hired with few to no actual psych qualifications is that they're almost definitely addicted to something and just happen to be lucky enough that it's legal. Common legal addictions:

  • nicotine
  • caffeine
  • gambling including microtransaction phone games
  • social media
  • pornography
  • processed sugar

MJ is my longest lasting friendship outside of my own sister

Inside this person's sister it's too wet to smoke

Dopamine

Understandable. Can be a good thing though, as long as you don't take the easy route!

My smartphone. Unfortunately.

Coffee

More espresso, less depresso.

Sweets. I have a huge sweet tooth.

I'm right here with you in this boat. I'm just really glad I hate baking or else I'm sure I'd weigh far far too much.

Lmao I love baking, so you see my issue here. Nothing like making a beautiful pan of cinnamon rolls and eating half.

I dunno if might help - but I had a problem with reddit (before switching to Lemmy). I ended up putting an app timer on it for an hour every weekday and 2 on weekends. Honestly, it helped a lot for me.

Yeah, I used the LeechBlock browser addon for that. Worked ok, though I was often tempted to override it. 😅

Do what I did and get perma-banned from Reddit. Then you'll just be addicted to Lemmy. 😤

Then you'll just be lurking all the time lol

(I don't have an account but still lurk on reddit with adblockers)

I use an app called Lock Me Out to ensure that I don't get into bad habits of scrolling too long.

I recommend getting into some other hobbies that require your attention.

God, me too.

I use a self hosted front end for reddit so at least im not logging in there but sweet jesus.

Internet...

But also constantly thinking about past memories... nostalgia?

Have you considered writing a memoir

Yes...

Unfortunately I've been just been binge watching a bunch of random stuff and been procrastinating on it...

Don't worry... I'll get that done some day...

5 decades later...

"Eh, I'll work on it tomorrow..."

(My most recent binge-watch is Frieren... lots of flashbacks... just like I go through a lot of "flashbacks" everyday lol... it's so poetic, so rhymey)

Porn, Video Games and Youtube Shorts. The Holy Trifecta of Loneliness .

Damn dude... You really have to quit those YouTube shorts.

But what else should I jerk off to then?

Video games

Reading academic books that freak people out when they come over to my place and get me labeled as a pretentious douche.

got any recommendations?

Yeah. The Identity Trap.

Great book on how/why our universities and politics are so fucked up the past 10 years.

Going out to eat. I try to limit myself to 3 times a week.

What's your favorite to go to?

On Saturdays for lunch we let the kids pick. Me and my wife work from home, on Tuesdays she gets to pick where we go for our lunch date and Thursdays I get to pick.

The wife likes to pick sushi, panera, taco bell, and a good local burger joint.

I like to pick Qdoba, Firehouse, Burger King, local Indian place, chick-fil-a, and random new places around town.

I knew people who eat out 3 times a day.

They always complained about how broke they were and how expensive life is..

True. One thing that helps is I hate delivery apps. I only use them when work gives out gift cards. The food is always cold and garbage when I finally get it. And not using those helps save money a lot too.

What about when you hang out outside on a weekend, then that is easily two meals outside.

Do you not hang out outside that long or do you go home for lunch and go back out?

Nah, we tend to either stay home or when we go out to do things on the weekends they're quick errands and we're right back home.

Thinking.

I'm not good at it, but I do it often.

Staying up long in the evening. Might sound a bit weird but there's a thing called bedtime procrastination, and I'm very bad with it. I'll try so hard to fix my sleeping schedule but the next evening I'll again be like "nah we can do half an hour more" which turns into multiple hours, which turns into another day with no energy. However in the evening I'll feel awake again and the cycle just continues. I'm going to talk to a doctor about it next.

cum

Soda for me.
I love it.
I hate it.

I just wish so much that there were half sugar sodas out there. All the synthetic sugars of the diet or 0 calorie ones taste like garbage.

I've been cutting the ones I drink by pouring a can of eltzer water in with the regular can of soda, but I think even that tastes a little strange compared to just watering things down.

Make your own. It's pretty easy. It's just water and flavorings and sugar and you boil it down slowly.

Syrup in the fridge made this way will store for weeks and you can customize how strong/weak you want your soda to taste.

Liquid Death has some great low-sugar sodas. I’ve been a strong fan of their Doctor Death. Their tea is also super low in sugar.

Oh really?? I didn't know they did anything besides overpriced water at concerts, lol. I'll check it out, hell yeah.

Only tried Liquid Death once, and it was Arnold Palmer I believe. Just tasted like watered down iced tea...

I think the flavor was called "dead billionaire" though which gave me a chuckle.

I mean, that’s their model, yeah. That’s exactly what it is.

Yeah I mean I knew that... It was still weird to open a can of something and have it taste so watered down.

Same... I drink an embarrassing amount of diet soda. I'm like a chain-drinker, to be honest, and I'm almost never without one. When one runs out I get another.

I like to add a splash of regular when I use a fountain soda machine, which is the best way to drink soda anyway, imo.

Agreed with the second part 100%. On the rare occasion I get fast food or something, getting the good stuff straight from the great soda teat is probably the best part.

I drink a lot of plain carbonated water. I mean carbonated water with powerful bubbles like most sodas. Some carbonated waters are awfully bad with weak ass bubbles indistinguishable from something that was left open the day before and went flat.

There are some lower sugar sodas, or hybrid sodas that use fruit juice along with Stevia or monkfruit in order to cut the weird taste. Olipop is my favorite, and Spindrift has some good flavors.

Blue cheese. Specifically double cream blue cheese spread on triscuits.

I used to think blue cheese tasted like play-doh...

Food

That's the real insidious substance in the US. Unlike other vices, food is actually necessary to live so every time one has to eat they run the risk of a relapse. Imagine nicotine addicts still needing to use it as a means of breathing, even if it's with a vape pen at a really small dose it can cause huge cravings.

My computer, in full working order, with Internet access.

If any of that goes wrong, I'm in a very bad place.

Weed got me through the hell that was last year, and it sure as shit looks like it's gonna be just as useful this year.

2025 made me an alcoholic

Understandable

Hobbies, I can't get enough of them, gotta collect 'em all. Every couple months it's a new fixation.

Fucking neurotypicals...

I’d say coffee, because I have a low level dependency on morning caffeine and high level emotional dependence. I’d say alcohol, because I tend to binge drink weekends.

But really, it’s my smartphone. I can cut alcohol and caffeine out easily, but I can’t lose the smartphone, which means it’s always there ready for me to dissociate.

Food

It might be an eating disorder

I avoid talking to my therapist about it because I don't want to confront the truth.

As I read this, I’m looking down at my spoon and the jar of peanut butter I’m holding …….

I just ate a whole chocolate bar after eating a big bowl of pasta...

Caffeine, I love it.

Music, I NEED it on nearly all the time or I’ll drive myself insane repeating parts of songs in my head. Only turn it off to sleep

How do you find enough stuff to listen to ?

I have a lot of artists I like so there’s usually new music even without checking out new playlists, although that works great too. Honestly the biggest part is probably just that if I really love a song I don’t mind hearing it super often, so I’m usually perfectly happy just hitting shuffle on my library and vibing with whatever’s on

I have a lot of artists I like

Damn that must be great. I have like 1-2 songs I like from ~10 artists

Oh wow, have you tried listening to other artists and not found anything you like?

Yes, I often try to put on playlists, listen to the albums the songs I enjoy come from, let the algorithm choose for me, but nothing seems to please my ears, sadly

Ironically just stumbled on this: https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/64775117

Edging

My preferred choice is the Husky 34 in T Handle Edger. I love edging in my garden.

Nicotine, and to a very mild degree alcohol

Opening outlook, checking my email, closing outlook. Repeat.

Also weed and lemmy

Doomscrolling

:(

Nicotine but I just use pouches now instead of smoking, nasty fucking addiction. I’m also an alcoholic big time so I don’t drink. I like drugs…

Video games

computer/internet

Benadryl. I have always struggled to sleep.

Have you taken enough to encounter the shadow people?

Oof, I've been there. Cutting back of it suuucks

Benadryl is linked to dementia.....

-also someone who needs help sleeping.

Caffeine. It's perhaps a boring answer but I have a physical dependence on caffeine.

Nicotine/vapes and eating way too much

Crisps. Think you guys call them chips. I love 'em.

Just one?

Caffeine.

Former addict of nicotine, alcohol

Buying records, and also browsing Discogs adding records to my cart before not actually buying them.

Have you reached the "accidentally buying" records you already own point? If not, you've got a way to go..

Only a few examples of that so far, but I fear there are more coming!

Nicotine and motorcycle riding. Living in a country where it's way too cold to ride 3-4 months of the year(and not that pleasant for an additional two) is hard. I honeslty feel a physical need to ride my bike. It makes me feel so god damn good

Unsweetened iced tea. I go through a couple gallons a week. But it can’t have preservatives/bitterants in it (citric acid is common) because those taste nasty, so it’s hard to just go buy a gallon somewhere. I’d make it myself but it’s hard to keep up with the pace.

Oh wow. Do you have any problems with heartburn or anything? The acidity of tea eats at me

I do, but for other reasons. Some teas are way stronger than others (orange pekoe can be particularly harsh) but doing a cold brew method is more gentle. I like Moroccan mint green tea as a luxury item once in a while, and it’s pretty soothing on the stomach.

Running and coffee. I would probably trade coffee for running though.

Nicotine.

Gambling, smoking
