I'd like to ask everyone, which movie have you rewatched more than three times?
3mon 9d ago by lemmy.world/u/zoye in asklemmyI haven't known what movies to watch lately. Does everyone have their own treasure movies that they've seen many times? 😀
- Month Python and the Holy Grail
- Young Frankenstein
- Seven Samurai
- LOTR Trilogy
I see a lot of LOTR fans here. Good crowd.
I had a holy grail vhs which i watched more or less every day after school. I used to be able to recite it from start to finish.
Also had both terminator movies on a double vhs so I've seen my fair share of them as well.
In steam of consciousness order:
- Young Frankenstein
- Princess Bride
- Double Indemnity
- Nightmare Before Christmas
- The Breakfast Club
- The Fifth Element
- 12 Monkeys
- The Terminator
- Star Wars (first trilogy)
- Harvey
- The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
- Men In Black
- The Incredibles
- Inception
- E.T.
- The Sting
- Grease
- Ghostbusters
- West Side Story
Probably a number of others
Every kid had that movie on tape or dvd that watched over and over. Mine was Young Frankenstein on beta.
Mine was Ghostbusters. Watched it until the tape broke rewinding it one day.
It's so great. Like Princess Bride, very quotable, too.
Tron and various Star Treks
The Fifth Element is the quintessential sci-fi movie. Literally, the word quintessence means "fifth element".
It's so completely enjoyable.
I second most of these, especially The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly.
I would add most Kubrick films including Dr. Strangelove and 2001.
Also, Being John Malkovich, The Man From U.N.C.L.E., Dawn of the Dead remake 2004
The most recent film I can't stop watching is Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Theives.
Dr Strange love, 2001, and Being John Malkovich are all movies I've seen more than three times.
First time I've seen 'Harvey' mentioned here.
I wish I could give more upvotes.
When I was a kid, I got into watching old movies, and that one became my favorite. I loved that movie.
As he got older, Stewart did it on Broadway and a couple of times for television.
"If I ever go broke, I can always take 'Harvey' on tour and get back on my feet."
I haven't seen it listed here in a quick scan, so:
Office Space
You don't need a million dollars to do nothing. Look at my cousin. He's broke as hell, don't do shit.
Watch your cornhole, bud.
I love that Swingline only introduced the red stapler after Milton made it famous
A classic comfort film.
I revisit Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind every few years when I wanna get my guts all twisted into knots.
I think when Kaufman is left on his own he's too much of a bummer and Gondry on his own is just too far out. But somehow they come together in a perfect balance with Jim Carey in perhaps his best serious role, IMHO. The soundtrack really takes it the extra mile.
I appreciate it because Joel and Clementine come off as just two kinda fucked up people having a kinda fucked up relationship; very relatable. Neither is perfect or completely at fault and the film very much leaves it up to your interpretation if they can or should work together. I don't think it has a happy ending, do you? Compare that to something like 500 Days of Summer where you're really supposed to sympathize with Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character but mostly I end up wanting to push him into the mud. Hard.
The subplot between the doctor and his secretary is maybe a little unnecessary? But Kirsten Dunst is amazing so whatever.
That movie is my white whale. I have tried to watch it a dozen times and I’ve never finished it. Not for lack of interest or trying. Just can’t do it
The indie movie theater near my college did a "soundtrack comes alive" showing with live music. It was phenomenal!
- Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)
- The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (1966)
- Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)
- The Third Man (1949)
- The Ladykillers (1955)
- The Big Lebowski (1998)
- Repo Man (1984)
- Stalker (1979)
Probably several others, but those are the first to come to mind.
Repo Man has one of my all time favorite lines.
Harry Dean Stanton.
"I hate regular people. Regular people spend their entire lives running away from tense situations. Repo man spends his whole life getting into tense situations."
Lite entering the office: "Someone piss on the floor again?
Great username.
I still have it on VHS. No machine, just the tape.
I can't believe I had to read so many comments before getting to one that mentioned The Big Lebowski. So rewatchable.
Seriously! It’s the first movie I thought of. I went to a couple of Lebowski Fests back in the day. So much fun.
Having scanned through the list of movie titles in this thread the one I most want to watch again is The Third Man.
I think of all the movies everyone has mentioned only the Rocky Horror Picture Show is the one I’ve seen more then three times in cinemas. Sure I’ve seen a lot of movies three or more times but only Rocky had Saturday night Midnight showings that I went to for a couple of years.
On second thought the local rep house also played Stop Making Sense for a few months for Friday night midnight dance parties and I’m pretty sure I went to 10 or 12 of those too.
I don't re-watch movies very often, and more than three times is rare as hens' teeth. Sometimes it's because it's an absolute classic, or sometimes it's because I'm weirdly fascinated by it. Let's see if I can remember those rare exceptions.
- Starship Troopers (good movie, and something about it charmed my socks off)
- Les Triplettes de Belleville (absolutely must-see, smashing masterpiece, no need to know French) (free to watch here!)
- Big Lebowski (words cannot describe)
- The Life of Brian (Monty Python's finest movie IMO, and a fascinating commentary on religion)
- Fire and Ice (good movie, and I found the rotoscoping utterly entrancing) (free to watch here and here!)
I lost count:

'The Warriors' and 'The Blues Brothers' would be one of the best grindhouse double features of all times.
Every time Blues Brothers comes on tv, I'm hooked.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. I know it's popular to hate on them and point out flaws, but most of them are perfect "junk food" comfort food flicks. And some of them are really good!
Back in the day I was a supervisor in a call center.
We had large screen TVs up in all the rooms. We had access to a cable station with movies on demand.
There was one guy who begged us to put on 'The Avengers' every day.
Every day is (of course) excessive. Also, similar to how you shouldn't listen to your favorite song every day, even most die-hard fans would get sick of it with that much exposure...
Do you do the chronologically ordered “omnibus” cut? Including the shows explodes the runtime, but it’s a fun concept
I’ve probably seen Hot Fuzz more times than any other movie. It was a comfort movie for a while.
Mornin' angle
Princess Bride
Pretty much any studio Ghibli movie. Have watched spirited away, Totoro, howls moving castle, valley of the wind, and many more more than 3x. Don't often rewatch stuff but have a soft spot for ghibli!
These are just movies I've probably seen more than 3 times in no particular order, they aren't all necessarily masterpieces (though some are):
Everything, Everywhere, All at Once
Princess Bride
Blade Runner / Bladerunner 2049
Idiocracy
Interstellar
Spaceballs
Clue
The Other Guys
Dr Strangelove
Airplane! / Airplane 2!
Terminator 2
Kung Pow: Enter the Fist
Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure
Home Alone
12 Monkeys
Inception
The Iron Giant
Trading Places
Star War: Backstroke of the West, The Third Gathering
Off the top of my head / all-time popular:
- Avatar (the blue alien one)
- Interstellar
- The Dark Knight trilogy
- Lord of the Rings trilogy
To satisfy my inner little boy:
- Ip Man
- Transformers
- Pacific Rim
Animation:
- Frozen
- How to train your dragon trilogy
Yeah I'm a basic bitch
The 3rd dark knight is so weird. Not as bad as other problematic outliers but one and two is enough for me
Definitely agree there. The first two were so good, I don't exactly remember everything in the third one but I remember being really put off in general.
Jurassic Park. (1,2 and 3)
Tremors (1 and 2)
Lake Placid (RIP Betty)
And Then There Were None
The Thing
Robin Hood (Disney animated version)
Star Wars (Original trilogy + Episode 1)
Addams Family Values
Django Unchained
Inglorious Basterds
Pulp Fiction (not a Tarantino stan, I swear)
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
Aliens
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Ironman (first one)
Pacific Rim
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
The Big Short
Probably more than that TBH. I rewatch a lot.
Django Unchained
Inglorious Basterds
Pulp Fiction (not a Tarantino stan, I swear)
I laughed at this. Can't deny he's made some great films!
True. I wouldn't say he's the greatest, but the guy has a good sense of pacing, framing, and understands how to create a narrative with just the camera.
A ton, but the one I'm most inclined to talk about is The Thing (1982). We rewatch it almost weekly since I introduced my spouse to it which is amazing because each time we spend about an hour afterwards dissecting the things motives, the order of replacements, different theories, etc. It's truely one of the best movies ever made. The practical effects get a ton of praise, but for me it's just gotta efficiently the movie is at what it does. You know every character within minutes of their appearance, you feel the alienation and paranoia, and the thing itself is so inexplicable that even after hundreds of watches in my life time I genuinely can't rationalize why it does what it does.
The 2011 one would have been better if they left in the pilot alien and had better set and custome guys. It doesn't feel like a pequal, it feels like a remake set in 2011.
The Fifth Element comes to my mind immediately. It was my happy place.
The Lord of the Rings, It's what I watch when I felt lost.
Also, Nostalgia, another film I rewatch when I felt not belonging and nowhere to go back to.
Fifth Element is my happy place too!
Fifth Element was at the top of my movies that I would stop and watch when scrolling cable channels alongside Top Secret, Clue, and Shawshank.
- Holy grail
- The only two terminator movies that have been made
- Akira
- Black cat white cat
- Underground
- Casablanca
- Cabaret
- Lotr
- Wall-e
- Totoro (and a bunch of other ghibli movies)
- Pulp fiction
- Life aquatic (because I always forget the story and whether I like it or not)
- Napoleon Dynamite (will never not recommend this to anyone, regardless of cultural snobery)
Probably a bunch more
I'm so glad they stopped at T2 and didn't ruin it by making a bunch of increasingly ridiculous sequels and TV shows.
Hot Shots! Both, btw
All LOTR and Harry Potter movies
Primer
Napoleon Dynamite
Primer doesn't count. You haven't watched it once until you've watched it three times.
So 9==3?
oh my god Primer was so good. That's intense.
I was gonna say that one, GOSH
My no-doubt incomplete list (I enjoy watching old favourites over):
- Bladerunner
- The Blues Brothers
- The Princess Bride
- Baby Driver
- The Cornetto Triliogy - Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The World's End
- Monty Python - Holy Grail, Life of Brian, Meaning of Life
- Star Wars Trilogy (original and best)
- Dune (the David Lynch one)
- It's a Wonderful Life
- Twelve Angry Men
- Die Hard
- Alien
- Aliens
Can't believe I forgot the Princess Bride on my list. Also, Time Bandits.
A subset ...
- Ghostbusters (1984)
- The Princess Bride
- Wrath of Khan
- Lord of the Rings
- Aliens
- The Bourne Identity
- Life of Brian
- Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Excellent choices
Unusual or less known movies I've watched a quite a few times:
-
Leaves of Grass
-
A Scanner Darkly
-
Red Lights
-
Where the Buffalo Roam
-
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
-2010: The Year We Make Contract
My mind is blanking on the others
When the young cosmonaut races to Roy Scheider's cabin and hugs him because she is terrified of dying alone.
Lithgow having a nervous breakdown on his first space walk, then helping the cosmonaut when he freaks out.
1000000000.
Number is far left. (Probably because it's md enumeration list.)
And on Voyager (on Android) the 9s and the 1. that becomes 1000000000 are clipped so that only the last 2.5 digits are visible.
The fix is not obvious: you need to escape the . with a backslash (\.):
2000.
1000000000.
999999999.
1.
2010
A lot of good moments in that movie. My fave is when that scientist has to tell Hal to stay behind, and Hal's like hol up, what'll happen to me? Then for a couple seconds the movie just pauses while Hal decides whether to go along with it or not.
So, when they were preparing for the first movie, the monolith was supposed to be a shiny diamond. Nothing the effects people could come up with looked right, so in the story boards they replaced the diamond with a black box. Then someone said that the black box looked cool, so they went with the monolith.
For years, fans speculated about what the monolith meant. Clarke and Kubrick kept mum. Finally, Clarke was at an event and some kid said he had the anwer.
The ratio of the monolith was 1 : 4 : 9, the squares of the first three numbers.
Clarke liked it so much he put it in the sequel.
And yes, that actor is very underrated.
I think 2010 is underrated bc to really get into that movie you had to: 1) have watched 2001, 2) have liked 2001, 3) be open to a sequel that was very different in tone.
I also really liked the way that scientist was having a dialogue with his computer back on Earth. AI seemed so open, so full of possibility, not so limited and corporate like it turned out to be.
I'd say that the difference in tone is the biggest hurdle.
If you get a chance, watch 'The French Connection II.' It was also poorly received. The best part is Gene Hackman's performance. I won't give away any spoilers, but it's more about his struggles than solving a crime.
I don't think I've even watched the first French Connection, I'll have to check it out sometime.
You really should see The French Connection.
One of the all time greats.
There are plenty (nearing my 60s, I've had plenty time to watch movies ;). So allow me to name just a few I always enjoy watching. They are in no order save the two first ones:
- '2001 A Space Odyssey'. There are movies, many are not that great, some are excellent and of those a few are true work of art, and then there is '2001'. I'm an admirer of most of Kubrick's work but this one is in a category of its own. I hated the first time I watched it, then I watched it again and was blown away, sequence after sequence. And I'm blown away every single time I re-watch it. It's one of the two movies I consider on par with the greatest books I've ever read.
- 'Les enfants du paradis' (Children of Paradise). Marcel Carné, 1945. A french movie and the second of the two movies I consider as good as the best books I've ever read. Maybe even more than 2001...
- '12 Angry Men'. Or what it means/should mean to live and to be a citizen in a democracy.
- Gone With the Wind.
- Ghost in the Shell (the original anime)
- The Dictator (Chaplin)
- 'The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean'. I love this movie despite all its flaws. I love every bits of it, even its flaws. And I love its ending even more.
- 'Dances with Wolves'. I'm a sucker for Westerns and this one, right with 'Open Range' and maybe 'True Grit' (the Cohen version), which is also a great novel, is my all time most... loved Western. Not my favorite, but the one I love the most. Every time I watch it makes me wonder what the USA (and the rest of the world) could have been if they had managed to get rid of their hate (of the natives, and of nature). I should also list the Newman/Redford 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid'. But I feel bad for only listing so few as there are many more great Westerns and even a few truly amazing ones (there is also a lot of turds, I will admit it). This genre deserves a thread on its own as it so often overlooked or ignored because of its label. It's sad.
- 'Somewhere in Time'. next to Westerns, I'm a sucker for love stories. This one makes me cry every single time. I also like 'When Harry Met Sally', a lot.
- A History of Violence. I expected not much of it but it happened to be a great movie. With an amazing casting.
- The Birds (my favorite Hitchcock, so different from du Maurier's original short story which is also excellent, btw)
- North by Northwest (another Hitchcock, another of my favorites)
- Toy Story (the first 1, maybe the 2nd too), Ice Age (the 2 first ones)
- 'Singing in the Rain'. The movie I've watched the most, bar none?
- 'West Side Story'
- 'Scarface' (the one with Al Pacino).
- Kick Ass (the first one) made a huge impression on me. And gave me hope that all was not lost with contemporary US cinema that has grown afraid even of its own shadow and has started self-censoring, hard.
- A clockwork Orange.
- Full Metal Jacket (there is a lot I like less in it but it still is a great film)
- Barry Lyndon. God may have created light but Kubrick mastered it, in that movie.
There are so, so many more! Ozu is one of the directors I can endlessly watch and have a blast, I'm also a fan of Kurosawa. I have not even considered Italian (like, they were among the best) or the Russian cinema! Or even my own French movies: back in the days, French used to make a lot of great movies but that was before we too, like Hollywood, became so afraid of our own shadow that we started self-censoring... Sad times we're living in, bu that will pass.
'Judge Roy Bean'
First time I've heard it mentioned in a long, long time.
Wonderful choice.
Wonderful choice
:)
Anthony Perkins.
"I've never seen Bean here, so I assume he's in Hell."
A History of Violence was pretty underrated. Barry Lyndon bored the hell out of me, but the lighting was very impressive from a technical perspective (they actually used candles and a super low aperture lens for some scenes, no additional lighting).
A History of Violence was pretty underrated.
Quite so.
Barry Lyndon bored the hell out of me,
Not the most fast paced movie that ever was, I will agree on that. Still, I first watched it as a teen (already into history) and was in awe. This was first time I could walk into painting of those long gone times ;)
In a similar way, Peter Greenaway, the English director did a few great movies too: The Draughtsman's Contract, 'The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover', Prospero's Books,...
Watch 'The 3 Musketeers' with Oliver Reed.
Fun movie, and it looks like a painting.
Young Frankenstein
Pulp Fiction
Big Lebowski
Airplane! with Zero Hour! (1957) immediately after
Fifth Element
The Death of Stalin
Big Trouble in Little China
Princess Bride
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Tank Girl
Romancing the Stone
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Where the Buffalo Roam
Everything by Monty Python
Edit: everything by Mel Brooks
Yay for Tank Girl!
P-p-p-pow!
Where The Buffalo Roam has 2 of my favorite scenes from any movie. When he just starts shooting the dirt bank on the side of the road while driving, and when the lawyer climbs the fucking hospital to get in the window lol. It may be a hot take, but I like that movie way more than Fear and Loathing (I love both though).
Had to wait to see 'Big Trouble'
It's my very favorite of all time.
I think I was on my five millionth rewatch when I noticed that David Lo Pan appears briefly before they drive down the alley and meet the funeral procession.
Also, Margo is actually the duaghter of Richard Burton.
Lots.
The OG Star Wars (4, 5, 6)
Shawshank Redemption
Edge Of Tomorrow
Top Gun
Princess Bride (top 5 sword fight!)
Most all of Pixar’s stuff, and Dreamwork’s kids movies. My kids grew up with them.
Sleepy Hollow (Depp/Ricci version)
The Departed
Rob Roy (another top 5 sword fight)
Dune (original ‘80s version)
Alien/Aliens/Alien 3
Tron
Goonies
Rat Race
Lost Boys
Robin Hood: Men in Tights
The Breakfast Club
Ferris Buellers Day Off
Deadpool
The LOTR trilogy
Blade Runner - both films
Heist (a lesson in writing a script consisting of one-liners)
Ocean’s 11
The Name Of The Rose
The Last Mohican
Master And Commander
5th Element
Any of the Monty Python films, but especially Quest for the Holy Grail
That’s a start.
If I had to whittle it down to absolute favorites: Princess Bride, Monty Python, and OG Star Wars.
How do you manage to watch the OG star wars more than twice? I saw New Hope in the theatre. I saw the next one in the theatre and almost walked out. I saw the third one and thought OK I can deal with this, but not great.
Then I re-watched a New Hope again and realized, this is a boring movie.
10 seconds thought would have stopped you from making this comment.
These are some of my favorites I’m sharing, not yours. Ain’t nobody making you watch any of them.
No, I was serious. What do you find interesting enough to watch more than three times? New Hope was entertaining when I was 8, I must have seen that movie in the theater at least 10 times.
But as time went by I came to realize its pretty shallow, acting isn't so great and the wow effects of 1977 aren't much compared to the last 20 years. I actually get disappointed that I can't enjoy re-watching it as much as so many other movies. Maybe I saw it too much.
I will change the question: Which version do you prefer? I can say I like the original as released best, all the changes later just don't feel right to me.
Snatch
Idiocracy, numerous times.
As time passes, it gets worse (aka reality does. The movie is perfect)
Far too many to name, so here's the first 10 that come to mind:
- Ghostbusters
- Star Wars
- Goodfellas
- Aliens
- Clue
- Back to the Future
- Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me
- Akira
- His Girl Friday
- Escape to Victory
Akira is the first anime I've seen in this thread. I've seen it dozens of times myself; sticking to just anime I could add Ghost in the Shell, Perfect Blue, and Princess Mononoke.
I really must try and see more animé. Other than Akira, I think I've only seen Ghost in the Shell (once), a bit of Neon Genesis Evangelion (which I wasn't in the right head space to stick with for long), and a few Ghibli movies (Spirited Away, Totoro, and one other that I can't recall).
Galaxy Quest
I probably watched The Man from Earth (2007) over ten times.
Aside from the several good twists, what gets me about this story is thinking about the scale of time. If a normal person likely can't remember what meal they ate last year on this date, imagine that x1000 (and more). Such a great concept.
Princess Bride
Strictly Ballroom
Paul
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Star Wars 4,5,6
LOTR all of them
Operation Petticoat
Dr Strangelove
The Great Race
Pacific Rim
The Abyss
True Lies
Alien
Aliens
Clue
The Cutting Edge
Forbidden Planet
Harry Potter series
Kelly's Heroes
The Last Starfighter
Young Frankenstein
Raiders of the Lost Ark
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Star Trek movies: Wrath of Khan, First Contact
Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines
Gumball Rally
The Rocky Horror Picture Show
I think in general comedies are just way easier to rewatch for what ever reason.
Also I think just because I rewatch a movie a lot does not mean it is the best movie. I think some movies just give a certain vibe that is enjoyable.
- Airplane
- Naked Gun
- Scary movie
- Simpsons movie
- Spirited Away
- Se7en
- The Prestige
- Inception
- Weathering with you
I probably also watched some Christmas movies a ton of times just because they played on TV a lot when I was a kid like Home Alone.
The Lord of the Rings - watched these many times now, and a couple of those have been back to back marathons. And yes, extended editions every time.
The Little Mermaid - The original Disney animated version. It’s possibly my favourite of what is known as the renaissance era.
The Muppet Christmas Carol - I watch this every year on Christmas Eve. I think I’m up to about 15 or more years now. It’s without a doubt the best version of A Christmas Carol ever.
Top three off the top of my head. I’m sure there’s more but the won’t match the number of times I’ve watched these.
Hundreds of Beavers! It's an absolute delight showing it to someone who has never seen it before.
YES. I only saw it once and I want to show it to someone else with no explanation! That movie had us rolling.
I have one for you too:
"Marcel the Shell With Shoes On"
I just grabbed it off the shelf from my library because it looked interesting. Never heard of it before.
I went in completely blind and fell in love. Just hit play and settle in. Absolutely lovely.
Thanks for the recommendation, I'll give it a try!
I hope you enjoy it! :D
How to Train Your Dragon
used to fall asleep to it every night
My son really liked that one, and he would watch it over and over. I can't even guess how many times I've watched it at this point. Although that number pales in comparison to Wall-e. Before he moved on to How To Train Your Dragon, he would watch WALL-E literally on repeat. I used to whisper little prayers of thanks to whatever caused his little brain to fixate on Wall-e rather than some of the other movies he could have fixated on.
I have Toothless on a t-shirt and so few people recognise it it's crazy. Not even the kids these days! I love that character so much
- Mean Girls
- Inception
- Harry Potter series
- The Lord of the Rings Trilogy extended edition
Inception I've seen like 6 times. Best one was at our restored theater with a great sound system. Sat up front by the middle sub under stage. The launch was awesome.
The Departed
Godfather 1 & 2
Rogue One
The Fifth Element
Dune 1 & 2
The Princess Bride
Star Wars 1-6
Anchorman
Big Fish
Big Trouble in Little China. Its my comfort-film.
i don't even have an answer for that. but i grew up pre-internet and owned lots of video tapes.
i'm marveling at the notion that there may be people who haven't rewatched movies a lot?
- Star Wars trilogy
- Aliens
- Young Frankenstein
- A Christmas Story
- Die Hard
- Predator
- Terminator 2
- The Fifth Element
- Ghostbusters
- Spaceballs
- Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
- Last of the Mohicans
- Iron Man 1
- Cap America 1
- Shaun of the Dead
- The Matrix 1
- Wizard of Oz/Dark side of the rainbow
Just cause these haven't been called out by the top comments-
True Lies
The Hunt for Red October
Great adds
Top secret, Back to the future, Star Wars (IV,V and VI), Godfather (all three), LOTR (all three), Goodfellas,
Most of mine have already been mentioned, but the biggie that hasn't is: the Back to the Future trilogy.
Not only are there lots of little details you probably don't catch on the first viewing, I'm surprised they don't make more millennial-and-older users' lists just from them being often the best thing on TV, in the ancient times before streaming.
Evil Dead 2
Dr Strangelove
I watched Blade Runner many times, and I still think its crap. Although I like what it is trying to say.
Monty Python movies. All of them.
Spinal Tap
Fritz the Cat
Return of the Living Dead
So many more if I think about it.
Wow my list would be equally as large as some of the other people which have replied so I’m just going to list the ones I have seen the most -
- Blade Runner
- The Duelists
- Alien
…..and many many more :)
Ridley Scott for the win!
Die hard. It's not a "treasure movie", but a "christmas tradition"

"When Alexander saw the breadth of his domain, he wept for there were no more worlds to conquer."
"The Long Kiss Goodnight."
This is the Christmas movie you need to see.
Lucky Number Slevin is likely my most watched movie.
Kung Fu Hustle I’ve seen countless times.
That and Shaolin Soccer are sacred films to me. :D
Journey To The West as well, though.
- The Goonies
- Romancing the Stone
- Star Wars
- Bloodsport
- Idiocracy
- Moving
- The Money Pit
- Forest Gump
Midnight Run - it's just a perfect movie, not one frame is superfluous in this movie
The Thing - yearly re-watch
Spirited Away - yearly re-watch (always accompanied by other Miyazaki movies)
Smiley Face - one of the few movies that make me smile, Anna Faris is the cutest thing ever
Alien - I watched it secretly as a kid while everybody was asleep at home, and watched it who knows how many times since. It didn't scare me, it kindled my love for sci-fi.
I watched the thing for the first time very recently. That movie holds up so well.
Watched midnight run for the first time a few months back randomly. Quite enjoyed it, especially for its age.
Baby driver ! Love it.
Mulan, many times, same with toy story, all the pooh movies, up, over the hedge, soo many like that
Almost heroes is a must watch. About hurt myself laughing at it. Same with both ace Ventura's.
Baby driver was such a creepy rewatch. Everytime Kevin Spacey called the young male character by the name "baby" it made me cringe.
That's the biggest downside of that movie. I just try to ignore it best I can. He did play that part so well
Too many to count, and more than I even remember.
I went without internet in an area not friendly to children being outside, so I watched movies in no particular order over and over. Just "yeah I haven't watched this in a few weeks" and re-watch.
Lord of The Rings, Star Wars, Star Trek, Monty Python (all), Princess Bride, MIB, Evolution, Terminator 1&2, Starship Trooper... Honestly most popular Sci fi movies from the 90s... The sound of music, fiddler on the roof, a bunch of musicals..
I'm sure I watched the classic disney movies many times.
I know people who buy watch a movie and then don't feel like watching any of them ever again.
Dredd (2012). Excellent film, stellar performances from Karl Urban and Lena Headey. Alex Garland writing goodness before he started directing.
On the topic of Alex Garland, I've also researched Civil War (2024) three times. I love how both movies are so tight, not a scene or moment wasted.
District b13, the transporter, fast and the furious 1, 2, and Tokyo drift, nation Lampoon's Christmas vacation, the big Lebowski, 28 days later, resident evil, probably others.
I watched my VHS copy of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon so much in just 1 year, that the following year my parents got me a copy on DVD because the tape in the cassette was worn out and warped.
I watch Groundhog Day at least twice a year.
My go to comfort movies are:
Sneakers
Hackers
The Italian Job (2003)
Gone in 60 Seconds (2000)\
Note: I didn’t say “Best” or “Favorite” but these are infinitely rewatchable for me with any level of attention paid to them.
Have you ever watched the original 'The Italian Job?'
Benny Hill as a computer genius is the least funny thing in the movie.
- Office space
- Fight club
- Robocop
- Blues brothers
- Home alone
- Elf
- A Christmas Story
- Die Hard
- Willow
- Star wars (all of them)
- Star Trek (most of them)
- Tremors
- Terminator 2
- John Wick
- Predator
- The equalizer
- Cable Guy
Honorable mention: the countless movies with Paul rudd that played on Saturdays on comedy central
Thank you for calling out tremors!! The second is also great! Ass blasters is straight to dvd for a reason and should be ignored as with anything else past the first two.
Les Liaisons Dangereuses with Glen Close and John Malcovich. I used to be able to quote the entire script by heart.
- Outlander (2008)
- The 13th Warrior (1999)
- Braveheart (1995)
- Gladiator (2000)
- Waterworld (1995)
- Escape from New York (1981)
These and a few other similar 'epic' movies were my go to lullaby movies for decades.
I'd put them on late and fall asleep to them, but I'd also watch them through sometimes too. And I still throw them on sometimes, just for kicks.
I've seen Braveheart probably 30-50 times. Not very historically accurate, but such a great movie.
Waterworld
Which version though? Theatrical, ABC, Extended, Ulysses Cut or Ulysses Cut Revised Edition?
The Matrix
I saw it 3 times opening weekend.
I'm old, so tons of them... mainly SF, fantasy, etc. all the LOTR (extended), Star Wars, Star Trek, Alien, BTTF, etc. Dances With Wolves (the extended version)
a good trilogy too: Once upon a time in the West, Duck, You Sucker!, Once upon a time in America.
Seriously tons of movies from 2000 and less. Also dozens and dozens of French movies (native language) I have watched multiple times.
I never watched a MCU movie for instance. Since LOTR trilogy I basically stopped watching new movies, nothing beats them.
Fifth Element Serenity (Firefly) Goonies Dune Cabin in the Woods Megamind Tropical Thunder Super Troopers Transformers the Movie (1986) A Christmas Story
Dumb and Dumber
I can't believe I didn't see anyone else post it. Mostly I've rewatched it because it was replayed on cable so much but I certainly love it.
Brazil (1984)
3 Idiots for sure
- Whiplash
- The Princess Bride
- Edge of Tomorrow
- Rogue One
- Lord of the Rings trilogy (extended editions) <— annual tradition for me
Edge of tomorrow is underrated.
Three times that's it? There's so many I couldn't even begin to list them all.
Catch Me If You Can
Waynes World.. its my guilty pleasure
I know, I'll use the "may I help you-riff".
So I married an axe murderer is my guilty pleasure.
Soul mate 🫶
There’s plenty of movies that I like to rewatch, and most have been mentioned here already.
But the first movie I remember rewatching over and over again when I was little, was Labyrinth.
Funny enough I haven’t seen it in more than thirty years. It’s mostly nostalgia vibes by now, but I remember being in love with that movie back then.
Ronin. Back when TV was a thing, if that shit came on, we did not change the channel until it was done. GOD what a fantastic film that is.
Dredd
The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Serenity
K-Pop Demon Hunters
Ghost in the Shell (1995)
Star Wars Trilogy (unedited originals)
Pulp Fiction
The Grand Budapest Hotel
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Kick-Heart
Le Maison en Petit Cubes (The House of Small Cubes)
Shaun of the Dead
Blade Runner
Cowboy Bepop: Knocking on Heavens Door
Neo Tokyo
The original non-Gameshopified Astartes series by Syama Pedersen, though technically like five episodes, I always watch all of them in one go. :3 The Emperor Protects :3
Most definitely Big Fish. Every time I swear I won't cry; every time I end up sobbing. With snot.
It just hits too close to home. I even had to trigger-warn my 55-year-old dad, to whose home it hits even closer.
My go to movies when I need to throw something on:
- The Martian
- Thor: Ragnarok
- Everything Everywhere All At Once
- Aliens
The Martian is my favorite book and the movie was surprisingly close! Very well made.
Do you have recommendations for a fellow fan? I haven't seen the middle two you mentioned, are either of them similar in style? Like in the nerdy, clever ideas, positive vibes, collaboration, and plausible physics type of way
I suspect it’s a rare movie that can hit all of those themes.
Primer is close, but it doesn’t have positive vibes. It’s quite dramatic and a bit dark.
Moon is another that might be close. It’s not so plausible, it I think you’ll get similar vibes to The Martian.
Last, you might try Mickey 17. It’s a recent film. It’s not realistic, but the vibes are somewhat similar also.
Thank you! I'm going to take a look :)
the three lotr, its a wonderful life, miracle on 34th street all versions, the orginal star wars trilogy, star trek one and two and four, ladyhawke, up, princess bride, close encounters of the third kind, alien, aliens, forbidden planet, raiders of the lost ark, rocky horror picture show, charlie brown specials, grinch who stole chrismass cartoons, frosty cartoons, the blues brothers, original dune movie, all the monty pythons I know of (grail, brian, yellowbeard, meaning of life), time bandits, spaceballs, terminator 1 and 2, yellow submarine, airplane1+2, top secret. Maybe it should be limited to post 2000. Thing is when you go back there are things broadcast every year or when they were broadcast you made it a point to catch it then in the age of video cassetes if you did not find anything you felt like that week for the weekend you maybe picked up something you liked or you had a friend who had not seen it or something. Not as much came out every year and in addition as more comes out the total pool is way larger. so it is harder to rewatch things. Like I think I have only watch the harry potters twice but drop them into the 90's and im sure they would have been a regular pickup or i would have owned them. That being said there are some older movies that are just classics to and there is a reason you went out of your way to catch it broadcast.
Lost Highway VHS got pretty worn out back in the day
Three Days of the Condor
Excellent 70's paranoid thriller.
I posted it to fullmoviesonyoutube@piefed.social a while back, if you want to watch it.
EDIT: Agh, it was taken down from Archive.org. It's available for free on Pluto though.
There was a time I’d watch V for Vendetta every November 5th, but that’s fallen off in recent years. Still a great movie; it’s one of those few films I think is better than the source material. I have also probably seen Billy Madison 500 times. There are a ton more I could list but those are jumping out in my head
Bad Santa is my christmas movie. I regret watching Bad Santa 2 once.
I am very old. Not sure if this will help or not. I will try to skip the obvious stuff.
Phantom of the Paradise
Devine (warning very weird and sexual)
Time Bandits
Weird Science
Return of the Living Dead (1985)
- Judge Dred (the new one)
- Blade Runner 2049
- Ready Player One
- LOTR
I watch these films multiple times a year
Tremors 1, 2 or 3. Don't bother with 4+ its all straight to DVD nonsense.
Redline (2009) probably the best animated movie of all time (studio ghibli people i will fite u)
Idiocracy is very funny in a not very funny kind of way
Elemental was a fantastic Pixar IP that looks like its going to get some fascinating world building in a sequel
Redline (2009) probably the best animated movie of all time
I'm not sure if you mean that in the sense that "this is the best movie, which is animated, of all time" or "this movie has the best animation of all time", but in either case, Akira exists, so you can't possibly be correct.
Tremors, though, I can support you on without question.
I feel like its the best the media has achieved so far. The color representation, the purposeful distortion of the visuals, the visual design itself, all coming together in a batshit over the top nonsense story. It is the pure essence of a cartoon mixed with some truly passionate artistic expression.
Honestly I dont even care for the characters. Its a feast for my eyes.
There are other works with much better stories, way more technical visual design, and all kinds of other neat shit. Nothing beats Redline for me when it comes to any anime.
P.S. Funky boy did nothing wrong.
Event horizon and "god bless America"
Madmax...all of them.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier, probably a dozen times.
John Wick 1-4. Saw them all in the theater at least three times a piece. More at home
Amelie
City of Lost Children
Delicatessen
Yes I like Jeunet.
Dark City
Children of Men
I also like distopias.
Lanyrinth
One name David Bowie
Love Delicatessen
- Super Troopers
- The Big Lebowski
- Breakin
- The Blues Brothers
- Predator
- Aliens
- Garden State
- Starship Troopers
- Brazil
- Pulp Fiction
- A Clockwerk Orange
- Delicatessen
- Bad Boy Bubby
Real Genius. It is a movie with a very young Val Kilmer and lasers. That's all you need to know. Watch it.
Marry poppins.
What a good movie.
But honestly, pretty much any movie I saw as a kid.
RIP my parents, I wonder how many times I made them sit through the original Mario bros movie.
- Robots
- Scott Pilgrim against the World
- David (Your Name)
- Hardcore Henry
- In Time
- How to train your dragon
- NiNoKuni
- The girl next door
- The secret life of Walter Mity
- Pirates of the Caribbean
- Iron Man
- Moana
- The Giver
- Kung Fury
- Incredibles
- Constantine
- The last witch hunter
All watched 3 times or more and logged.
I re-watch movies and tv shows very often. Some movies I've seen over 20 times.
It's rare for me to only watch something once.
Real genius.
- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
- Spirited Away
- Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
- Tron
- Every Disney movie that came out between Peter Pan and Toy Story 2 including those two.
Tron: Legacy and Hot Rod are my comfort movies.
Lord of the Rings, Gattaca, There's Something About Mary, Dazed and Confused, The Death of Stalin.
Interstellar
Most Star Wars movies except 8 & 9
F1
Back to the Future trilogy
Avengers: Infinity War
Black Panther
Both modern Dune movies
Fury
Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy
The Martian
Oppenheimer
BTTF trilogy
Return to Oz (Mostly, I commented to say this, because no one else has yet.)
Most of James Bond
Along with many of the others already mentioned, but I'd be remiss if I didn't include Miracle on 34th Street (1947), probably all of the Charlie Brown Specials, A Christmas Story, Frosty the Snowman, The Grinch who Stole Christmas, and probably several others, just because as a kid we watched them every holiday. I'm sure there's more on this list, but I'm old.
I've also watched the first season of Altered Carbon at least three times, and Rick and Morty, Archer, and others.
Drop Dead Gorgeous Best in Show
Megamind
I got trash taste, granted but;
As a kid? He man and the masters of the universe.
As a young adult? Grandma's boy.
Currently? I don't think I remember movies well enough for it to be considered a rewatch. But I've definitely rewatch Peter Jackson's lotr more times than reasonable.
Ones I haven't read in this thread:
Trainspotting
Tombstone
The matador (2005)
Starship Troopers, Die Hard 1 & 2, Alien & Aliens Mad Max, Road Warrior, Thunderdome, Meet the Parents, Little Miss Sunshine, Wedding Crashers, Step Brothers, Office Space, LoTR Trilogy, OG Star Wars trilogy, Any if the Star Trek films, 2001
My cousin Vinny I watch it once a year because it is a masterpiece.
Terminator 2. Judgment Day is my favorite movie of all time. I watch it pretty consistently. Sometimes I'll leave it on playing in the background when I'm doing stuff on the computer.
Probably only Star Wars 1 - 6.
Amelie for the feels. Friday for the laughs.
- Monty Python's
Holy Grail,Life of BrianandMeaning of life(in that order of rewaches). Although I haven't seen them in years, now that I live somewhere where weed is legal I should do that (never seen them stoned) Primer, which if it's not on your list here you either haven't seen it or haven't understood itThe MummyandHarry Potter(especially the first couple). They're one of my wife's comfort movies so we watch them every once in a while if she's feeling downLotR, although it's more of an event to rewatch them.Stargate, every few years we rewatch the TV show when we have nothing else to watch, we do that with some other TV shows as well as it's good background noise to just relax. And since it starts and ends with movies we've watched those several times.- Pink Floyd's
The Walland Daft Punk'sInterstella 5555are awesome music albums so I have watched those several times Hair, similarly love the musics
And although I haven't seen them too many times (but at least twice) Memento is a great movie if you haven't seen it. Also I haven't seen it multiple times but The Strangers is a great horror movie.
I basically never rewatch movies. The only exception is Lord of the Rings basically. I think Sinners and Megalopolis will join it, but I haven't rewatched them yet
I watch The Hogfather every Christmas (Hogswatch?) Eve. Think the count is up to 11 or 12 now.
milo and otis is an eternal classic for people of all ages
Dogma, Lawrence of Arabia, Philadelphia Story, Hudson Hawk, The Martian, Edge of Tomorrow, Kung Fu Hustle, Delicatessen, Apocalypse Now, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, LOTR, Star Wars (original 3), The Thin Man series.
Also Dr. Strangelove and all the Monty Python, Princess Bride, 5th Element
Princess bride Tron Iron man (and the rest of the infinity stone arch) Decoy bride There are more, just can't think of them right now.
Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle
Muppet Treasure Island
A Muppet Christmas Carol
The Princess Bride
The Great Mouse Detective (the most faithful movie adaptation of Sherlock Holmes, fight me)
Inception
Ghost in the Shell
The Little Mermaid, but not by choice. It was my little sister's favorite movie and she would genuinely watch the VHS tape of it, rewind it, and then watch it again immediately. My brothers and I once entertained ourselves on a family road trip by quoting the whole movie, word for word.
Which Ghost in the Shell?
The first, animated, movie. I refuse to see most live-action remakes, and any exceptions are carefully considered.
Correct answer :)
Lots of good ones posted already. Trying to add to the list:
The Princess Bride, La Femme Nikita, My Own Private Idaho, Ong Bak, Ichi the Killer, Kung Fu Hustle, The Matrix, Dai Nipponjin (Big Man Japan)
Terminator, for the nostalgia.
So many. i will just list one that i bet most people have not heard of:
the Vourdalak
it’s in french. it is one of the best horror movies i have seen in a while. maybe the best vampire movie since let the right one in. in canada, it is 99c to rent it on the apple store right now
Interstellar, The Day after Tomorrow, Deep Impact.
Deep Impact is on rotation like an album along with The Core of all things.
Pulp Fiction
- Harry Potter films
- Spider-Man Into the Spider-Verse
- Zathura
9 To 5 Baraka Baghdad Cafe
The first Transporter movie just for the pure nostalgia. If I’m flicking through channels on tv and it’s playing, I will sit there and watch it even with commercials running.
For some reason as a teenager I watched Fantastic Mr Fox about 17 times over several years. It is a good movie, but I can't say I recommend anyone else watch it that much. Once is enough.
An outlier for Me that I rewatched often is Xmen 2 for some reason. Nostalgia and vibe just hits Me with that one.
- Perfect days
- Fallen angels
A night at the Roxbury
The 1986 Transformers movie. Would rent that every couple of weeks as a little kid.
I'm not a movie person at all, but for some reason Everything Everywhere All At Once, and The Truman Show, both hold a very special place in my heart and I have seen them countless times each.
That and the Steven Universe movie, but I'm guessing that's not a very good first watch lol
Black cat, white cat
I’ve watched a lot of movies more than 3 times.
12 monkeys is the movie I’ve seen most, though, coming in at multiple dozens of watches over the years. It’s easily my favorite. It kicked off a new way of thinking for me when I was an impressionable young teen, and has largely held up in terms of watchability.
The tv show based on it couldn’t have done a worse job of holding my attention, though. So that was disappointing.
Master And Commander: The Far Side of the Earth.
It's a war movie with an all male cast, and the manliest moment in it is when the Doctor who is doing surgery on himself to remove a bullet from his chest, looks at the captain who is assisting and asks "Are you alright?" And the marine that accidentally shot him is anxiously waiting outside the tent to make sure he's okay. GAH I'm going to the store and buying some beer and some popcorn and I'm watching a movie tonight.
Victor Victoria. Jazz hot baby
Tron: Legacy (that's 2010) This is probably more driven by limited selection in the cable days than free choice, but I do enjoy these. Not everything has to be a masterpiece to be enjoyable
Demolition Man
Probably most Star Wars between 1-6
Probably Fast and Furious 1, 2, 3.
Jurassic Park 1 and 3 (I swear 2 never aired on cable)
Spider Man, Toby maguire, 1 and 2
Probably half the Pirates of the Caribbean
Batman Begins, maybe The Dark Knight
Men In Black, definitely
Shrek
Elf
Honorable mention due to irony: I accidentally watched Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind a second time, forgetting I watched it already.
I struggled to recall a movie I watched three times, I very rarely rewatch movies. Then I remembered, Wicked! I watched it once when it came out, then again when it released in better quality to piracy sites, then once again with my cousins :3
Strictly Ballroom, Baz Luhrman's first movie
A few off the top of my head:
-
Donnie Darko ; I'm a little more partial to the directors cut
-
Kill Bill Volume 1 & 2 ; watched pretty much all Tarentino stuff several times, but this one the most. Inglorious Bastards comes pretty close.
-
Gone Girl ; I love David Fincher. Only a coincidence that I've happened to have watched this one the most.
-
The Big Labowski ;
-
Shrek 1 & 2 ; watched an inconceivable amount of times. Rewatched Shrek 1 in Spanish and was blown away how hilarious it was. Turns out the script was readapted by Mexican comedians instead just a translation, and was the closest of a chance I've ever had to watch a movie again for the first time
Holy shit, so so many. But I'll mention some favorites that I don't think everyone has seen.
Top Secret, The Pentagon wars, Down Periscope, Men in Tights, CHIPS.
I think they're all quite funny. But if I had to suggest just one, CHIPS will probably be a solid choice for most peoole. It's modern and really funny. (18+)
I don't think I've ever watched a movie more than 3 times... Maybe Howl's Moving Castle. Possibly A Chinese Ghost Story: The Tsui Hark Animation, as well.
One movie to rule them all
Digimon Movie (US)
Hangover 1
Do the DBZA movies count?
Because I've watched them all about 7 or 8 times now lol
I think Cars i dont remember much.
Very very few. I don't usually rewatch anything.
The few that stand out are: The Usual Suspects, Star Wars series (first 6), Die Hard (first 2), some others maybe.
I don't think I ever rewatched a series though. No patience for that.
Trick r' Treat, every year around Halloween, even before spirit made a bunch of merch for it
Tropic Thunder The Nightmare Before Christmas Hocus Pocus Dr. Doolittle Does Titanic count if I watched it for Leonardo DiCaprio reasons? 😂
I watch TNBC every year, usually for Halloween and Christmas. Used to watch Hocus Pocus for the same reason.
the lotr trilogy is a good one, especially if you have the extended versions.
Rear window by Hitchcock
Drömkåken, starring the Swedish actor legend Björn Skifs (also known from the Ouga-shaka song "Hooked on a feeling"). Truly a masterpiece in every aspect; acting, direction, editing, special effects, soundtrack. Pure gold.
I have a lot.
One that gets almost no love anywhere is "Mr. & Mrs. Smith."
I get that Brangelina was already played out before the movie even opened, but it's well worth a look. Enough comedy, action, and romance for three separate movies.
Holy Grail Life of Brian Dark City Fight Club Death Proof Ghostbusters Inception Memento The Thief and the Cobbler Sister Act I & II
The Other Guys. That has to be funniest comedy I have ever seen.
Rear Window never gets old
Forest Gump
Meet the Feebles(1989)
One of Peter Jackson's early films. Think muppets gone bad.
We turned it into our cult classic through high school.
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Wild Strawberries
Eyes Wide Shut

i have never rewatched a movie, I didn't know that was much of a thing.
All of my friends and family rewatch movies. Acquaintances from work will recommend movies they move to rewatch. It is really common in my experience, although I do have one friend who barely watches movies and if he does it is only once.
I have ADHD and miss details, a lot of details. If I enjoy a movie then it is likely that I will rewatch it if I am not particularly focused to keep up with a new movie, and I tend to find lots of little things I missed or notice things in the background.
@zoye Matrix Triology was subverb for me, enjoied all the meaning behind the meaning, the 4rd movie is just a piece of garbage
I enjoi the wai you write! :)
So many, but my go to is Silverado. 😉
Cloud Atlas.
Particularly if you're old enough to remember the 80's, "Hot Tub Time Machine" is the greatest comedy of the past 30 years.
Most of the big names in scifi/fantasy/action/comedy, so here’s the less common personal favs:
Lake Placid, Hellraiser III, Beastmaster 1 & 2, Heavy Metal, Heavy Metal 2000, Ralph Bakshi’s Wizards, SLC Punk, Disney’s Robin Hood, Dead Alive, Night of the Lepus, MST3K the Movie, Aquateen Hunger Force Movie Film for Theaters, The Ewok Adventures
Primer, mostly to figure out the timelines.
World's fastest Indian Happy Gilmore Law abiding citizen
Too lazy to keep scrolling but I haven’t yet seen mentions of Lilo & Stitch (the best movie Disney ever made) and Dark City (the director’s cut and if you haven’t seen it don’t spoil it, just watch it).
…and now I’m seeing a bit of a tone difference between them
The list of these films is short. To be exact, its probably only "Blow" (I think its from the year 2000). Its the story of one of the biggest cocaine smugglers in the US (his name was George Young). I can definitely recommend it.
The big short Wake up dead man Knives out Glass onion 2x, but close enough Lot's of Disney movies like cars, monsters inc, etc. Inside man War dogs Definitely others

I watch it every winter when it snows. Kind of a tradition.

I've also seen some films multiple times due to having kids, but I can only think of Toy Story now.

More recently I loved coming back to Lost in Translation.
