Haru Basho 2026 - Day 11

3mon 1d ago by lemmy.zip/u/tigeruppercut in sumo

Chiyoshoma with the first henka of the day against Nishoryu, the visitor from juryo.

Tobizaru and Kotoeiho have an even matched tachiai but Koto has a big two handed thrust that flings the Monkey back to the straw. He anticipates Koto's drive and circles out of the way to recover for a drive of his own. Seems like Koto tried a throw of his own as he got pushed out but couldn't get purchase on anything, as Tobi had a control point at Koto's armpit and pushes the arm way up over his head.

Mitakeumi tries the day's second henka, but Asanoyama gets the read on it and Mita has to jump back as he tries a slapdown. Fan goes to Mita but it's overturned by the judges.

Fujiryoga and Shishi have a belt fight that Fuji comes out on top of. Looks pretty solid for his top division debut, standing at 6-5 today.

Ura gets solid position on the belt against Asahakuryu but has to make a few strong lifting drives before he finally succeeds in putting him over the bales.

Roga's belly bumping yorikiri reminded me a bit of Kotoshogiku's go to style.

Fujinokawa goes with the third henka of the day. I think he read his decision in Abi's eyes.

Churanoumi and Yoshinofuji muscled each other around for a bit until Chura got a drive toward the edge, but Yoshi pivoted to take it with an underarm throw.

Hiradoumi had a solid tachiai but WTK's 270º overarm throw was undeniable.

Oho also employed a Kotoshogiku-esque belly bumping yorikiri against WMH.

Wakataka slipped a bit but finished with some nice dancing against the bales as Gonoyama falls out.

Kotozakura was in such a position that he only needed one hand on Takanosho's chest to shove him over the straw.

Aonishiki had a good drive off the tachiai but he was perhaps too eager as he backed Kotoshoho to the bales. Koto read his final drive and passed him to the side as Aoni fell to the clay.

Takayasu has a strong tachiai against Hoshoryu but the yokozuna shoves his head to his right and then redirects Papa's followup charge past himself and out of the ring.

Kirishima leads with 10 wins while Gonoyama, Kotoshoho, and Hoshoryu are just behind at 9.

Ura gets solid position on the belt

check out Ura's calves, most visible on his left leg. They look like a jet engine's gonna pop out of them to zoom him forward.

Kirishima vs Hoshoryu tonight!

Kirishima vs Hoshoryu tonight!

Hype is real.

Also, it's good to see Ura winning with 'normal' kimarite this tournament.

Hype is real.

I'm cheering for Kirishima but I gotta say, I think Hoshoryu has the better chance...

My prediction? Hoshoryu wins, but they meet again as a "play-off" after the final day and it's a lot closer then. (Note: my predictions are usually wrong!)

I like Hoshi-chan!

WTK Vs Hiradoumi like Zelda BoTW, spin to win!

WMH must be injured but he hides it so well.

Gono almost had Kiri there. Just got a little overexcited at the end and the cooler head prevailed.
