For those of you with a living room or multiple rooms; do you have a TV in your bedroom? Why or why not?

2mon 13d ago by lemmy.zip/u/ramble81 in asklemmy

I haven’t had a TV in my bedroom in over 20 years. I had an ex who always wanted it on all the time, even to sleep to, and it drove me crazy.

No TV in my bedroom. The only time we spend in there is sleeping.

I assume you use the Red Room for other things.

The kitchen is the sex room.

A gentleman never tells!

Exactly this. Preferably also no phone, but since they are easier to move around it happens...

I already have a magical rectangle my dumb ass likes to look at already. I don't want another.

"No screens in the bedroom" was supposed to to help me sleep better years ago, it didn't really matter if they're in there or not but I still keep to the rule.

We listen to music, read, has the sexes and other things but no TV in the bedroom. Always a rule for us.

We have no tv. None.

No TV in the bedroom, just the living room. I do find comfort at times from a soft livestream, but I normally sleep better in quiet darkness.

I understand the hard-line approach, but for me it's situational. A laptop for those times is sufficient.

Pretty neat if you're interested in missing all the movies' endings.

I have a smart watch that can detect when I fall asleep. I would love it if there was a way to sync that time stamp with when I started a movie and automatically fast forward to 5 mins before then.

It would have to be some third party integration so the streaming service doesn't harvest the data and decide to stop making things I enjoy because I had a long day.

I think samsung or android does this. I noticed that my tablet at night will randomly be paused on a black screen and when I wake it it'll be paused on a video around 5 or 10 minutes after I fell asleep, it's creepy but I guess it helps me not miss my youtube videos

No TV in the bedroom! That's for rich people, like people who have ice makers in the fridge and the whiring blades in the sink!

Ew no. Absolutely not. TV in the bedroom is the antithesis of sleep hygiene.

Me nodding sagely to this comment as I scroll in bed

where else am I supposed to watch my pornos?

ofc there's a TV in the bedroom. one in the bathroom, the kitchen, the laundry room, the family room, the living room, the dining room, the breakfast nook, all the bedrooms, the office, the garage, the patio.

so what you’re saying is that you live in a one room shack?

No TV in the bedroom for me. No need, really. The bedroom is for sex and sleep, nothing else.

Exactly. Not even phones allowed. Pitch black darkness during the night. Best sleep ever.

One of the few things we agree on with my spouse is not having a TV in the bedroom. The TV in the living room and our PCs are enough, the bedroom is for sleeping.

Bruh, what? You disagree on most points?

Some of us got less lucky than others...

For heavens sake, no. There is a TV in the living room, and a small one in the studio. A TV does not belong in any bedroom.

Especially not a modern "smart" TV with built-in microphones...

Embarrassed to let it hear you wanking?

In smaller places, yes. It was the video game window.

In bigger places later on no. Bedroom is for sleeping.

No TV at all, and no social media other than federated platforms and YouTube these days, and I only use alternative no algo clients for YouTube. If I hear about something to watch, I sail the high seas, find it, watch it. If I like it, it goes into my backups.

One of these days I might buy an old ass TV and set up a JellyFin server, but I'm fine with my 1080p monitor. I only watch like 2 shows at a time max, and keep up with like 5 or 6 YT channels. No time and no need for others.

Admittedly, my computer is in my bedroom though. I always have had my computer in my bedroom though, so that's just a personal taste thing.

I used to, but I haven't for about 10 years or so. By the time I go to bed, I want to sleep. I might browse my phone for a few minutes first.

A TV in the bedroom also encourages you to stay in bed longer in the morning.

I don't need a TV in a bedroom, I got screens all over the house and garage, but not in there lol.

Yes and no.

Occasionally I like to fall asleep to SNL or a football game in the fall, but my bedroom is also haunted and the ghost likes to turn the TV on at weird times, so I leave it unplugged the vast majority of the time.

No TV in the bedroom. The bedroom is for sleeping and sex. (I have 2 TVs in the living room, but I am using them as PC monitors and don't watch TV and only subscribe to crunchy roll.)

We've generally avoided a TV in the bedroom. When we were given a second hand TV from a family member that was better than our living room TV, we mounted the old TV in our bedroom. We used it maybe 10 times over 2-3 years.

Now we live elsewhere and only have 1 TV in the living room again.

The bedroom needs to be a low tech place, for optimal rest.

I took a protip from that CGP Grey video "Spaceship You" and so my bedroom is only used for 3 things;

  • sex
  • sleep
  • naps

I do. It keeps me off my phone and I can watch the shows I have on my list. And, when I suffer from nightmares, it provides me some comfort. But, then again, I still technically sleep with a night light despite my age so maybe I'm an exception.

Lol I use a nightlight at home and travel with one. Not because I'm scared, but so I can navigate the room quickly in the middle of the night. Usually just to pee. I already wake up confused enough about my location at home if I happen to wake, no need to be further confused in a new place.

I feel big screen is slightly better than looking at my phone all the time. Like putting on a movie or show makes me focus on one thing at a time, and when I want to go bed, the sounds of the natural doc I have on make me go to sleep fast. I know people recommend no blue light at all, but for me, it's better to pick something slightly less bad, imo. I'm all for TV in the bedroom.

No TV but the more pernicious thing now is anything connected to the internet. Feels like "no TV in the bedroom" should be updated to "no screens in the bedroom" since a lot of folks end up doom scrolling instead of going to bed.

No bedroom TV. As an ADHD person, that's just a 'never-going-to-sleep' trap. I do have a list of youtube channels I put on my phone at lowest volume and screen off for background noise. It can't be too interesting or I won't sleep; it just needs to keep my mind from wandering in bad directions.

No TV in the bedroom. Bedroom is for other activities.

Like sitting on your phone or crying!

My partner and I don't have ANY tv's.

Neither of us are super into TV or film in a way that builds creativity or community (we don't critique the technical or artistic merits of pieces, and we aren't into anime or other genres where there's potential to build a community around a shared passion). When we turn on the TV, it's to turn off our brains. We decided to not build a shrine to turning off our brains.

We have a laptop with a good screen and speakers that we use when we want to watch something together.

Hell yeah dude, because the bed is comfy. Favorite place to watch shows or game

I don't own a TV. I'd rather be on my computer approximately 100% of the time.

My husband and I don't have a TV in our bedroom. We'll go to bed at different times, and a TV going is just too much light and noise. If one of us wants to fall asleep to a TV show, there's a very comfortable couch in the living room.

I think it might be different if we had kids. In that case, having a TV in the bedroom can be useful, in case you want to watch something kids aren't old enough for yet. But it's just the two of us, so we keep a TV out of the bedroom. The bedroom is for sleeping and other activities.

I think the better question and the one that would get more yes or no answers is do you have any screens in your bedroom? Not necessarily televisions.

I think significantly more people watch their phones in bed than they do large TVs.

I had a TV in the bedroom, but removing it was one of the best choices I made. I liked the idea of creating TV-free spaces so much that I moved the TV out of the living room too. The living room is a social space, the TV room is a dedicated room to watch the TV. There is no context where "the TV is just on".

We don't have a TV at all.

No. No TVs in living room or bedroom. I have a separate gaming room for that. I hate TVs as center pieces unless its a gaming crt

Absolutely not. There is one TV and it is in the living room. We actually have two 'living rooms' (spaces that are not bathroom, bedroom, or kitchen) and if it was up to me the TV would be in the secondary one, farthest from kitchen and bedroom. I do sometimes like to watch TV but don't want it in my face all the time, and think living room looks better without one. But everyone else wants it in the bigger living room, which also holds the kitchen.

Had one in the room growing up. Had one when I moved out. Took it out when I got married, and haven't had one for well over a decade.

One in the living room though. Bought it when we got married. Stupid thing won't die so I can justify replacing it.

there is a boomer joke hidden in your last sentence

Sure do. I have a tv in my living room, my man cave, the primary bed room and the guest room.

The living room is the main TV, my man cave is for my PS5 and other game platforms, the bedroom is for my wife to do her yoga and sometimes she will watch tv when she cant sleep.

The guest room is also where we keep our treadmill, stationary bike and stairclimber, si we will use it then.

No, but like, I didn't buy the tv I have in the living room. My mom forced it on me. It doesn't have a cable package and I rarely turn it on. There's no reason to throw it away, but if it were up to me, I probably would have no tv at all. Kind of a 20th century appliance.

If my Do-It-All-Room counts:

(Greetings from my breakfast table lol.)

Assuming I had an apartment with 2-3 rooms (meaning a hobby and/or living room + bedroom) I would probably only put one in the bedroom as a spare TV.
But I would not buy a new one just to watch more screens.

I do not have a "TV" in my bedroom but I do have a tablet that I use for videos at night I like falling asleep listening to YouTube or twitch

I have a TV in my bedroom set up specifically for in case I have a friend over and we want to cuddle on the bed and watch stuff. It’s hooked up to my computer for ad-free YouTube but is separate from my regular computer monitor.

My roommates do have a living room TV but I feel weird about cuddling in front of them.

I mean, could always cuddle with them.

I don’t like my roommates enough to even hang out let alone cuddle, but in August that will change and I’ll have roommates I do want to cuddle with.

I don't own a TV and if I did it sure as hell wouldn't be in my bedroom

I have my old old TV from a pawn shop mounted on the wall in the bedroom. Still works. Good enough to hook up a streaming box to and watch something before passing out. Many a nights it has been something mindless like the Office or Parks and Rec

Maybe give some money to the poor before buying a second TV. Otherwise, a Sherpa might poison you for your hubris.

I don't now, not for any "screen rules", but because we have the space to spread out. I think that's an underlying factor to this thread. We have ownership of the living space and have a slight excess if you count occupants vs rooms with TVs or laptop areas. Between living with my parents later than I'd like and then having shared apartments, I always had a TV in the bedroom from ~10 on because that was my bedroom, my office, my game space, etc. But now, if the SO and I decide our house isn't crowded enough and add kids, I can certainly see adding a TV back to the bedroom.I wouldn't want them to feel confined with all their entertainment in one room like I felt growing up.

Nope, because as you said it'd be a distraction and can affect people's ability to sleep as the blue light messes with circadian rhythm.

No, I don't have a TV in my bedroom.

Why does me having a living room have any bearing on that?

Some people live in Studio Apartments or in Bedsits, where it's either having a TV in the bedroom-kitchen-living room or having no TV, no middle option.

Hence why OP stated that

I still don't really get it. I don't have a TV at all, so it doesn't matter how many other rooms I have.

If you’re in a studio apartment, you don’t really have a separate room for sleeping, so you likely have a tv visible from bed. If you move up to a 1 or 2 bed apartment, now you have a a living room, and a tv visible from bed is a choice. Guessing OP recently upgraded their living situation and is seeing how others do it.

Yes. It's wall mounted. But I haven't bothered plugging it in and I'm not sure where the remote has gone.

I do have a tv in my bedroom, so I can hook up my consoles, and PC and stuff :3. However we do not currently have a tv downstairs in the living room

Yes because there's 5 different people not counting a baby that all have different interests in my house. The only time we really come together to watch TV is for sports.

So you just sit in different rooms watching different things alone?

Not getting along kinda helps but for the most part yeah.

I would actually prefer that 90% of the time. I hate having to watch TV with someone else, I either miss what's on it or feel awkward when I have to rewind, then people have this warped perception that I care what they are trying to tell me as if it's not obvious I'm watching something on the TV so my focus is elsewhere.

My usage of a TV in the common room is when I'm feeling social or want to have whitenoise, any serious watching is strictly in my den or bedroom

Idk if my answer counts here, I technically have a “living room” in my flat but I’ve got it set up as an office. So, nowhere else for the TV to go except my bedroom.

If I had space to put it in my living room, I’d probably still want a smaller one in my bedroom. There are some YT channels I love watching before falling asleep.

I hadn't owned a TV for over 16 years now and wouldn't want one in my bedroom. Truth be told each time I see one turned on anywhere, I feel I'm attacked intellectually : sensational news that make people dumb, and don't get me started about the ads

The TV is used by everyone in the household, so it stays in the living room. Anyone who wants one in their bedroom has to buy it themselves.

I live by myself in a 1br. I have 1 tv.

Yes because it's another room we are able to chill in separately and it was my very old TV before I decided to upgrade to 4k. We have a living room but on some occasions we want to watch our own shows. It gets used about once a week. It's not used before bed. I don't see the issue if you're able to use it without fucking up your life. We don't have a TV in the children's rooms. We have a kitchen with a small dining table - no mobile devices allowed so makes sense not to have a tv. We don't have any other rooms.

we have changed over time, removing TV from our lives over the past 7 years. I did notice that it is easier to not watch TV when i have a lot of free things to do nearby, outside. like gardening and landscaping. we have one tv in the living room just to be able to watch a movie sometimes, it is awesome. bedroom is completely built to be aesthetic, cozy and for SLEEPING or whatever. nothing more, nothing less so we get out of there when we are done.

Yes, I like to watch whatever I want and that includes antenna channels

I've got one but really basically never use it

It's just the old one from the living room though I'd never buy a bedroom TV

Always. I watch something before I go to sleep. It's a routine. Whether it was a free TV or a nice LED tv, I always had something in my room.

Technically yes, but it's ancient and almost never used. Someone got me one of those toy NES things that's plugged into it, but I don't use it much

. I need to donate the tv (no one on free cycle offered to take it) or send it to an e-waste place. It's very heavy so it mostly just sits there.

Is it a CRT? There are gamers who will travel & pay you for a good sized one...

You were advertising in the wrong channels.

We just moved into a townhouse and bought a new, bigger tv, so at least for now the old tv is in the bedroom.

I'm normally against TVs on the bedroom but I'm not minding this so far - but if my fiance depression-nests in the bedroom I'll sell the tv.

Over 20 years ago I read Four Arguments for the Elimination of Television. It effected me enough that I haven't owned a television since.

DVDs and FreeTube though... Plus more time for books, music, making, writing.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Arguments_for_the_Elimination_of_Television

I do, I've mostly been using it as computer monitor though.

Where is “here”?

I don't own a TV anymore, I just don't really care about shows and I rarely watch movies.

No more TV in the bedroom in many many years (basically since I've had my own places). However I do put a random doc on my phone and listen in one ear about the fall off the Roman empire to get me to sleep.

I haven't in years. When I had roommates I'd have a desk set up in my room. Nice to have your own space. I'd always put on futurama to fall asleep to. To this day that show makes me sleepy.

My apartment has two rooms. One is a storage room, the other is the living room/bedroom. TV (a computer monitor hooked up to a PlayStation 4 for YouTube) is right in front of the pile of blankets and pillows where I sleep, and is on 24/7.

Have you considered converting the storage room? I added lots of wall storage and now it is a room room

I used to have a TV in my bedroom a very long time ago, but it had very negative impacts on my sleep. I can't recommend it.

I have a large monitor at my desk which is on a swinging mount so I can watch it from bed if I want. I resisted for years and then started doing it one day I was sick.

I have a TV in the bedroom because my wife goes up there to watch TV when I host ttRPG games. 🙂

I have a TV in both my living room and my room. I haven't used either in months, but I sometimes use it. My roommate uses the living room one a few times a month but uses the one in her room a lot.

My entertainment choices vary and currently it's covered by my tablet and pc, but I'll use the TV again when I want to play on switch or steamdeck(some games I prefer the deck).

IMO the tablet is just a physically closer portable TV...

Yeah, i even watch stuff on it.

I sleep better with a YouTube video playing as I fall asleep (specifically something from Vinny Vinesauce's Fullsauce channel).

I have one in the bedroom, but only because when we moved in together both my partner and I had a TV so there was an extra one.

Has not been turned on for about 2 years now though.

1 bedroom has a TV. Living room has at TV. Was going to put one in the guest room, but I'm not buying a smart TV.

No.

TV in a bedroom is just a bad idea for overall health.

Sometimes we do, sometimes we don't. I do watch in the bedroom sometimes, but I find that I don't use the one in our living room at all and have considered reclaiming the space. For me, the reason for having it in the bedroom is that there is an extra heater in there in the winter and it's extra cool in there during the summer because it's not on the top floor and is shielded from the sun by landscaping so it heats up much slower. It does heat up a bit slower now that my gaming PC got moved to my office.

Yes, but we never watch anything on it unless we are sick in bed. Screen time happens elsewhere in the house to separate the sleep from the family time.

No. My bedroom is for sleeping and only for sleeping. No computer, no TV, etc. That's not to say I don't scroll on my phone in bed, but in general I try to make my brain associate it with sleep.

Also, it's amazing how much easier it is to clean my room now that I'm an adult and don't have to keep every possession I own in that room.

No sex?

They're on Lemmy, why is that even a question?

no

bedroom is for quality sleep. if I want poor quality sleep, I'll sleep on the couch in front of the TV

looking at backlit screens before bed is terrible for my sleep quality

I don't have those things and I don't have a TV in my bedroom. I do have my PC in there though and I watch shit on that. It's off when I'm going to sleep though.

Right now, no. But I plan on upgrading to a bigger screen, so the current living room tv might be delegated to the bedroom, if I don’t end up selling it.

we have a TV in the living room, it only goes on once or twice a week, has a n Nvida box connected. I'm retired, so there's not enough time to watch much TV.

Personally I'm not a huge fan. We only have one and it's in the living room. I do stream quite a bit but I just don't want it in my bedroom.

I have a bedsit apartment, so I don't even have a TV.

I have computer in my room with TV above it and watch movies on it when living room is occupied.

I have a... less than smart TV hanging upside down in my bedroom. I only used it to watch The X-Files in there using my Steam Deck when I brought my second Maine Coon kitty home. I don't even think I have a remote for it. Figured some time in there would be good so she can start to smell like the house. She tucks me in when I go to bed every night so I did something right. TV is still there but has not been used in a few years. Since it is hanging from the ceiling it is easily forgotten and out of the way.

My TV is mounted to the wall above my computer desk in my bedroom. I have no SO, and so, it doesn't matter.

But, yeah, people who want the TV on "for background noise" drive me nuts. Although I did have mine showing a screensaver slide show of vacation pictures for a while. Seemed like a waste, so I stopped.

Technically I have multiple TV’s only because I wanted multiple large high resolution screens for my computer. I don’t actually use them as TV’s.

Multiple rooms, no TV in the living room but I do have one in our bedroom.

I don't like watching TV with friends, especially new ones. If we do want to watch something, they come upstairs and sit on the couch.

I have a cheap tv in my bedroom but I hardly ever use it. Anything I want to watch I would rather use my main TV in the living room, and even that’s rare these days. I pretty much only put on the bedroom tv when I’m folding clothes.

I don't have a place of my own, I certainly don't own any TVs. However, whenever I stay somewhere with a TV, it is ignored. I don't turn it on. If I had a place of my own I wouldn't have a TV, anywhere.

Most people do have TVs though, but I would say only about a third keep one in the bedroom.

I have one in my bedroom from my ex: she used to goto sleep listening to the news.

It was never able to pick up broadcast tv and I got rid of cable years ago, but it has an ancient ChromeCast that works fine.

... mildly infuriating: the other day I wanted to watch a movie on my tablet but accidentally hit to broadcast. The tv turned on for the first time in years, but you can’t turn it off that way, I have no idea where the remote is, and a software update years ago broke integration with my home automation. I was trying to sleep and there was no way to turn this thing off - I had to get up, move a dresser and unplug it. Annoying as heck

I rarely use any tv anymore. Dont get me wrong, I haven’t improve my watching habits, but TVs are so inconvenient and everyone has multiple screens . At this point it’s just inertia: if I were starting over I wouldn’t have any TVs

It would definitely still have some sort of physical buttons somewhere. We haven't lost that saving grace yet.

Yeah, but tracing my hands around the edges of the tv in the dark trying to find that power button just got my hand dusty, so I also had to go wash up

Yes, but it's not currently hooked up to anything because we don't actually use it.

I dont have any...
