Backing up bluray discs as ISOs with ddrescue?
2mon 9d ago by thebrainbin.org/u/Auster in datahoarder@lemmy.mlIs it a viable option?
I've gotten a few discs, and up to some years prior, I'd use the PS3 to back them up. However, as its HDD is starting to fail (took it long enough e.e''), I'd been considering getting a bluray reader for dumping the ISOs, possibly a Wabcom 5-in-1 but still evaluating that part.
But as I am on Linux Mint, and I don't mind the ISOs being encrypted (iirc I'd use FOSS keys and they'd work fine), would ddrescue be enough for that, or would I need to use some other program, perhaps even some dedicated/paid one?
Also bonus question: I also got CDs and DVDs to backup. Would I be able to do it for them too?
Thanks in advance!
I used to do this w my movies on dvd until I realized that it took up significantly more disk space than simply saving the movie as a file instead;
Agreed it takes quite a lot of space, but I care for the ephemera just as much as for the main content, thus I am fine with the space taken.
You tube had all of mine
You do you, but what about my question?
I suggested an alternative because idk if your question has an answer.
You're trying to use a tool that's meant for volume recovery/forensics to duplicate bluerays; you're in novel territory for most.
This is going to depend a lot on what kind of blu-rays you’re backing up.
Data/File Blu-ray? An ISO works, but may take up unnecessary space.
Video Blu-Ray? Any commercial video is going to have encryption and a DD copy won’t be sufficient. You’ll want to look at things like MakeMKV which is perpetual betaware, but this isn’t as trivial as you might think. A lot of these checks are hardware/firmware based, you’ll need to get certain models of blu-ray reader, and flash them with open source firmware. MakeMKV, LibreDrive are the tools you want.
Ooooooh! Thanks!
About being encrypted, iirc the PS3 generated the ISOs like that. They're movie and series discs, including one apparently with Java-based menus and that I'd been struggling to get running, Island of Dogs. Though in that case, as it was the last I was able to dump before the PS3's HDD started failing, I wonder if that one is damaged.
Edit: also, since you mention flashing the firmware, I'm guessing the keys can be extracted beforehand? Also, would specific brands be needed for extracting any discs, or just for extracting decrypted?
