Bethesda "lectured" Fallout New Vegas designer for saying the RPG would run at 30 FPS: "'Why do you have a fucking engine that can't run 30 frames per second?'"

"It was so offensive to me"

Goes on to say Creation was the solution. 🙄

Creation is literally just GameBryo with more graphical features tacked on. They're not even tacked on well. Remember what God Rays did to FO4?

Bethesda is absolute shit at the tech part. If Microsoft hadn't helped with the technical aspects on Starfield, I doubt that game would have even ran for a lot of people. While the game itself was pretty lame, the fact it ran smooth and stable even on unsupported hardware at launch was a huge surprise.

When they released it on Playstation not too long ago it ran like absolute shit.

They probably didn't have Microsoft's (or Sony's) help.

And to think, they are still using that same game engine.

Sure, they gave it a new name. But it's basically the same engine.

To Bethesda's credit, it definitely took feedback about New Vegas's performance on board and officially switched to its proprietary Creation engine for The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, a decision that likely avoided certain disaster. I can't imagine a game as big and complex as Skyrim running on Gamebryo, and I don't think I want to.

The fremdschämen I feel for the author of this article is intense.

For those who don’t know, Creation Engine is Gamebryo. They renamed it.

gamebryo isn't bethesdas thing, while creation is. they forked it, basically.

There was a lot of modification in between those two games though. They didn't JUST rename it ...

I wish they'd just bite the bullet and develop a new toolchain. Bethesda games are hamstrung by their tech and an unwillingness to start over. I mean, I get it, if I was trying to make money it's the decision I'd make. Their games sell despite their rubbish tech, so why change?

But I'm still going to moan about it!

What a prick. Toxic work environment much?

I was obsessed with FO:3 and was pumped that the OGs did the story for NV. Only real annoyance for me was my saves getting corrupted… I expected and knew how to work around the janky engine.

I think the problem is less the engine than it is the fact that they haven't sat down and did what it took to fix the technical debt causing this, or if intractable decided to move engines.

In other words, they've decided it's not important enough to so something about.
