Facebook is a hot pile of garbage that should be fired into the sun.

2y 9mon ago by lemmy.world/u/BonesOfTheMoon in casualconversation

Today I posted a picture of a stamp with an animal in it and they said the picture contained nudity and made me take it down, but I reported a photo of a guy with a fully visible swastika tattoo and they said that's fine.

I'd like to start a Lemmy community with photos of stuff that they refuse to remove called FacebookSaysItsFine.

Just delete your account, stop using it.

but what other honest and trustworthy corporation do I give all this valuable personally-identifiable information to?

I promise if you give it to me it will be secure since I am such a failure of a person I will lose it.

Can you send me page after page of ads and sprinkle in people in third world countries making street food or doing some jank trade work?

I have some pictures from my trips to South East Asia but I don't think I took any of the street food vendors.

You call this a social media platform?

Are you a venture capitalist with other people's money? Because if so I have you know that by our own internal methods of calculation we have 10 billion users and zero bots. Our typical user checks their status 800 times an hour for 24 hours a day. Money please.

Outrageous. We are giving you our data and we expect an on-demand personalized highly-addictive never-ending flow of dopamine in return

Sigh. Fine, come over tonight and I will give you a gummy edible. However, you have to stay for a bit and chill while I watch Classic Simpsons.

I find it hard because of my Livejournal friends, it's the way we're still in touch.

By posting stamps with animals in it?

Lol it was a gift from a Livejournal friend regarding an inside joke.

Exchange your email with your fb friends and toss your fb account in the trash.

I made a Facebook account a few months ago, not to post on it, but to access Facebook Marketplace because it's sometimes cheaper than Craigslist

I would pay NOT to have a FB account

which I suppose I do

Livejournal is still there. I have a permanent account from back when they allowed you to purchase an account for like $100 USD. I mailed them a check and everything.

All my photos and everything are still up. I see other people blogging there too. I still get email notifications from there too.

Just go back to using Livejournal. It's a fine platform honestly.

Hell I went back to using just tumblr and nothing else really aside from Lemmy as a message board.

I gave it up because it's basically a Russian government propaganda machine now. Did you listen to the Reply All episode about it? I too mailed a check for a permanent account but it stopped feeling safe in about 2015 so I shut down, nobody posts or reads there anyway that I know anymore. I miss it terribly. It was the absolute golden age of social media and I am closer to those friends than I am to anyone else.

Yeah I stopped using it around 2010 and that was not long after it became mostly Russian. I can't read Russian so I had no idea what any of those accounts were posting about and I didn't bother trying to translate the because it was like 2011 and translation online wasn't that good back then.

I've never listened to Reply All. I assume its a podcast.

Anyway, I'm in the US and I don't stick my head into Russian politics because I don't think its my place to do so. It doesn't concern me and I feel like its none of my business and I feel like the US really shouldn't go sticking their nose in other countries business but of course our government is full of fucking nosey idiots. Always has been and seems to me our history is full of us sticking our nose where it doesn't belong. I'm not a fan.

So if you have some kind of moral grudge against whatever those people are posting - I can't agree or disagree. It's good you stand up for what you believe however.

It's still just a platform though and there is nothing wrong with you and your friends going there, starting your own community so you can all keep and touch and talk to each other. No one says you have to interact with the Russians there.

It is a podcast and what they found out about Russian Livejournal is INSANE.

You know, I think I remember hearing something about that in passing. Might be a cool deep dive for later.

thanks! That's perfect.

i hope it takes linkedin with it

LinkedIn is the human centipede of social media.

"I'd like to say thank you to [company name] for hiring me. To the unemployed, get fucked."

Lol I hate those posts so much

You also have to word it like a tome that reads like you've discovered cold fusion and have amazing philosophical insights all due to your amazing colleagues at your internship

I am DEEPLY humbled to describe how fucking successful I am 🥰

I’ve never understood why people use it for socials. Jobs! That’s where it fits in my life. Last two have been through there. That’s all it is.

But haven't you considered the UlTRa GrInD MiNdseT that could bring real value to your organization? 😘🤷‍♂️😍🙃🚀😐🥳🎵🇺🇸🎶🦢🤞👍😈🇺🇦🇺🇦🇹🇼🇮🇪🤌🤗🥵👏🤮🙈

Yeah it's basically like an mlm and boot licker haven

using it as a social media will drive you insane.

Especially if you use the mobile app as it is riddled with ads and there are no mods available as far as I know

Using any of these websites’ apps is insane.

Y’all WANT all of your data harvested, huh?

Why would anyone use LinkedIn for anything other than presenting your professional credentials? I can't even begin to explain how terrible of an idea it is to post on social media with your resume attached and your career on the line.

There is a person I work with who has the unofficial job of LinkedIn stalking our competition. You can get some ideas of what they are doing this way. Are they looking for someone with this particular skill set? Maybe they are trying to get into another sector. I got a bio on my counterpart over there.

I'm not very active on linkedin, but it seems fine. The job listings are a bit shitty. There's other platforms that offer better job listings. Also there's a couple peopke who treat linkedin as facebook2.0, but I can mostly ignore those. I use it to keep a professional network and linkedin seems to be doing an okay job at that.

I remember I made a Kurt Cobain reference as a joke, and Facebook said I was breaking the rules against suicide or whatever.

Yeah, the same Facebook that was totally fine with an actual violent video I reported

The governments should break up Facebook. It needs to be held accountable.

They removed one of my posts for saying I was going to fight a person that doesn't exist. It was completely obvious that the entire thing was a joke, and again, the person doesn't even exist, but I guess that's a more credible threat than all the actual violence that shows up on that dumpster fire of a site.

The good people left Facebook a long time ago. I would even argue before the place was taken over by boomers.

I think ultimately, it was the share functionality that ruined Facebook, because it was once the place where you keep up with your friends, but then the genuineness of it is gone after you realize they only see their friends as a captive audience to get likes and get a boost for their Farmvilles.

It's a dehumanizing place, which is why it became a wasteland.

I distinctly remember back in 2010 right before I deleted my Facebook, everytime I logged in I would get depressed and sad.

Facebook was pretty nifty when it first started and wasn't evil. It was fun to connect with people from high school I'd never see again otherwise. I've restarted some great relationships that way. It's really unfortunate what trash it turned into.

Almost everyone I know still has Facebook, but no one actually posts on it. Personally I only really use messenger (which they just killed, coincidentally).

What's this about messenger? I still have it because of that one friend who won't move.

They are getting rid of the android app at least, presumably to force people back to facebook as they slowly starve. Website still works

After that whole palaver of them breaking it on the mobile site on purpose to get us to install Messenger in the first place?!

FML.

Do it, make the community. I'd subscribe. This post got lots of traction. There's an audience.

I think I'm going to.

Do it!

Why so much anger? Just stop using it. Apathy is better than anger.

I can't even remember when I logged into fb last.

I hate that an important tool that we could use for simple socialization and sharing of interests is instead in the hands of people who want to sow disinformation and right wing propaganda. To me, making Nazis ostracized is a value we should all share.

Deleted my account about 10 years ago. At times it was hard, but every time I hear about some new crazy shit they're doing I can't help but think I did great.

Got you beat by 1 year :) Deleted my account in 2012 when they changed their terms of use to own rights to everything you upload. And I had never used my real name to begin with.

I find it hard because it's where I'm in contact with all of my old Livejournal friends from across the world, and it's the platform where we can talk to each other still. That's why.

They probably value their friendship over the ideological stance of "Facebook bad".

That is quite the pickle... they want the downfall of the platform they share with their friends, but don't want to leave that platform.

Too bad there is absolutely no other way that OP can stay in contact with those people. There's nothing that can be done. /s

I hate listening to voicemails but I also love my grandparents, you know?

Yeah you don’t even need whatsapp(which is also Facebook). I wish more and more people knew about phone link which is installed on every pc. You can just use it like messenger. There’s also Skype. Then You can have a temp phone number in which you don’t have to worry about giving out and someone stealing your passwords to things.

It's not the same and you know it. I have the same issue with Instagram. Many of our interactions through the platform come from us reacting to each other's content (posts, stories, comments). Without that you lose a lot of "spontaneous" interaction.

Question is: How much does spontaneous interaction contribute to your life.

For me I found, it's not much more than a regular, short dopamine rush and lock-in in a certain bubble. Do I know a lot less about people? Sure. Do I miss something in my life? Hell no. That added peace is invaluable and a telephone call from time to time is much better.

That's a fair question.

Usually not much, so I have too started to log in far less frequently. However, as an example, I did get in touch once again with an old friend thanks to it (and we are still in touch), so it did help quite a bit in that regard. But I understand your point and I have been thinking about leaving the platform anyway due to all the privacy shitshow.

get in touch once again with an old friend

we all had this moment but at this time, it's unlikely any old friends will join FB/Instagram that haven't already.

I'd rather use my Facebook groups than Kik to plan swinger events, 100 times out of 100. Kik is so shitty it's unreal.

There's really no alternative to FB for what I use it for, since swinger sites are hot garbage and a lot of swingers are all over the map in terms of age. And again, Kik is terrible.

It i literally the reason I'm on Facebook, so I commented.

I don't care what you think is cringe and I am quite happy with my life, thanks.

I'm not out here proselytizing non-monogamy man. Not sure why you're being shitty, unless this is some kind of bit you're doing? Matches your username.

I searched for a community named "FacebookSaysItsFine" and haven't yet seen anything.

Be the change you want to see in the world!

I just worry people will post things like CSAM on it, but I think it would be very good.

I would suggest the opposite. Perhaps a Facebook doesn't allow this, community. Too much risk of attracting trolls and monsters.

That said. The FBI says that Facebook, Instagram, Twitter et al. They all contain a not insignificant amount of CSAM at any given point in time. The fact just never gets reported by press because they're normalized platforms by the public. Only the fediverse gets that sort of negative attention in the press because it's the disruptive outsider platform. When by both proportion and volume, almost all other platforms have a worse issue with awful content that regularly flies under the radar because they are big corporations.

It would definitely require some very active moderation and clearly-defined community rules. But it sounds like a great idea for a Lemmy community, if you have the time.

Cloudflare has free CSAM scanning tools available - they really just need to implement it.

When did “CP” become “CSAM”?

If you want to change the acronym, wouldn’t “CR” make more sense?

'cause porn is made with consenting adults. CSAM isn't porn. CR is typically what's depicted in CSAM (assuming that R stands for rape), but there's two (or more) separate though closely related crimes here. That and SA (sexual assault) covers a wider breadth of activities, which is good if a person wants to quibble over the term rape when regardless something horrific happened to a kid and videos/images of said horrific thing is now getting shared among pedophiles.

Will note I've only seen CSAM used when I started using Lemmy, so I'm not really sure when people started using the term over CP. I'm personally for it - it more accurately describes what it is, and while I haven't seen this term in the wild SAM to describe video or images of non-consenual sex acts among adults is good too.

I modded for Reddit before, I could manage this.

I worry about this on fediverse stuff. I made the mistake of looking at the links from a person who commented on anti trans legislation and let me just say yikes!

The link was to something trying to legitimize the identity of “map.”

NOPE.

I deleted my comments and blocked the sick bastard.

I blocked some instance that was all porn and that seemed to improve my experience. I'm not against porn, I just don't care for it myself.

Yes I absolutely hate it. If people want to watch porn, have at it, but could it please be on a porn site?

Try to stay apolitical and you won’t attract those trolls as early. Which I now realize may be difficult, considering many of the posts would be calling out Nazi scum…

I think only baby boomers are using facebook now. None of my friends are on fb hence the conclusion.

Facebook market place has completely broken and laid waste to all of its competitors. Every woman with kids I know is using it to buy and sell and give away children stuff.

not in Ireland. Adverts.ie rules the day here, thank god.

Freecycle.org is also still active in most places.

People will go where the stuff is. So, when I have anything of value, I take it to anywhere but Facebook, cause, ya know, you gotta put stuff in the other places

With the US being the shit show it is, I'm looking into leaving and Ireland is on my list of possibilities

you can dm me if you're serious and want visa advice

Kijiji is still putting up a good fight but I always wonder what I'm missing on marketplace.

I promise you plenty of other people are using it lol.

This was why I left. Last straw was me getting banned for a week because I called someone an asshole for openly calling for violence against trans people. I reported their comment as well.

Mine got me banned. Facebook said they were fine.

I sometimes feel like I should have a tinfoil hat on, but I'm honestly willing to bet that wite supremacy groups got members to get jobs at social media companies to purposefully let them get through the system.

Sure. I totally agree. Your basic clean cut fash in tech jobs. It's disgusting.

It's not a conspiracy, and it is present across all social media platforms. There is selective enforcement of rules and moderation and now many companies push 'engaging' content, which basically means pressing out and promoting 'safe' content that is easily agreeable or controversial to increase user time so more ads are seen.

On Reddit, it is very similar. Somebody can say something insane, but it is 'just an opinion' meanwhile you call them an idiot, and you get banned by admins. If you even suggest anything 'extreme' you are also getting site banned. It just turns everything into a hive-mind which is dominated by liberals. The fact anyone thinks it is a 'left-wing' platform shows how dumb people are. It's very clear that it is made to drive engagement and show ads to maximise income. These social media companies aren't interested in free speech or fairness. It actively harms genuine engagement because most people just won't even post or comment if they know it is risking a ban or downvote train where they get shit on. It's no surprise the platform is now infested with bots and reposts.

I’d like to start a Lemmy community with photos of stuff that they refuse to remove called FacebookSaysItsFine.

I get why you feel this way, but this feels a little superfluous. Like, making that community will never, ever change how Facebook does business, we're not going to shame them into being better by cataloging the terrible shit they allow. In other words, all we're doing is choosing to make a forum filled with the horrible, hate-filled posts that Facebook says are okay. I'm honestly more comfortable just leaving them on Facebook and not posting the same vile garbage here to make fun of it, because I don't think it will change anything other than a history of hateful posts on Lemmy.

We can make fun of how much they suck without bringing their awfulness and putting it on display over here, especially when doing that isn't gonna change a damn thing. Facebook has the "fuck you" money to ignore it.

Also, by definition such a community would contain a bunch of things we don’t want to see on Lemmy either. So probably better not to.

Exactly!! Why showcase shit we hate? Why spend energy on shit we hate?

That's a good point. It just makes me mad they get away with this.

I just would love to fight back in some way.

I personally find it hard to do because I have all kinds of old Livejournal friends on there.

I'd argue we're already fighting back by being here and choosing something like Lemmy over Facebook.

The more users they lose to competing sites that offer more community for the user, the more their influence will wane and eventually they'll become like MySpace and it honestly won't matter anymore, because who the fuck uses MySpace? I honestly think Facebook is coming close to this because young people don't want to use it anymore. It's no longer "cool" and hasn't been for a while. Sure they've got Instagram on lock, but they've been having a hard time competing with TikTok.

Facebook isn't a foregone conclusion and, personal opinion of course, the best way to fight back is to simply take away their ability to track you by deleting your profile, visiting Facebook as little as possible, and using Facebook containers in your browser to keep them from being able to develop a shadow profile for you.

Reddit has lots of subreddits making fun of that kind of thing from Facebook as well, and it hasn't changed how Facebook does anything. I don't think pointing out how much they such and documenting it actually does anything to them, in the long run. Getting people to stop using their services is a bigger deal. Because people using their services is how they collect data, which they sell to make money. Hit em in the pocketbook, it's the only way.

The problem with unlimited free speech is that it lets the worst people be free to be even worse yet. There is no such thing as ethical absolutism of any kind; it's just extremism in a flashier suit, and extreme is by its very nature hostile because it can be used to justify literally anything. Especially by true believers.

Every few years someone gets the idea of creating an internet absolute free speech zone and a few months later figures out why it is a terrible idea. It is never people from vicious dictatorships sharing messages about freedom. It is always child porn, scams, spam, and Nazis plotting terrorist attacks.

Anonymity does that, not free speech.

A few years ago, someone my daughter knew from school was posting pictures of her cuts from self harm on Instagram. I reported it to instagram but they didn't do anything about it.

Lemmy is social media. Reddit is social media.

It isn't the same, even if it pedantically has the same label. I have zero clue who you are or who you might be trying to be. You are two sentences at this moment to me.

Based and forums-pilled

There's no "pedantically" about it. You said you quit all the "Social" media a few years back, yet, here you are, posting and participating in social media. Be as flippant as you want about it, you're either and idiot or a liar. If we apply Hanlon's Razor here, I think we'll all come to the same conclusion.

Where did I say I quit all the Social media a few years back? Please show me the exact comment.

you’re either and idiot or a liar.

Remember that you said this about me while you search thought my comment history for me saying that I quit social media a few years back.

I didn't "Search" through anything. You literally said it in the comment thread we are in.

Edit. My bad, I mistook you for someone else. I apologize.

if you don't think things like reddit and lemmy are social media, you're beyond the comprehension and intelligence to even attempt to explain to. so yea. i also apologized for making a mistake. something rarely seen in "forums" or social media. sooo fuck off?

I love how you try to hard to not define fediverse as social media.

Are forums social media?

Yes

i only keep it because some friends died a while ago and it's the only trace i have of them left

that's extremely tragic

That's also a reason I have it.

Ugh. I would love to stop using it but I need it for school. My college regularly posts information on Facebook groups instead of its own websites and I need Messenger for communication/group work in college.

That would compel me to switch schools

That's impossible to avoid actually. That's how all colleges in my country work and generally that's how life works. Facebook is massive here and Messenger is the most popular instant messaging app among the youth.

Well now I'm very curious: what country are you in?

I'm in South East Asia (won't reveal more for privacy reasons). Facebook is really popular here.

That's concerning. Do people seem bothered by this?

No, no one cares. I'm the weird/paranoid one for being weary of data collection by tech companies.

Not the person you're talking to but I'm in the UK and went back to uni as an adult in 2018. Literally had to install Messenger because it was the only thing the kids used, for the entire duration of our degree. Completely blew my mind!

I kind of like that idea, do we have any Twitter users here to do something like that too?

Oh please Twitter should be fed to the sharks.

Absolutely, I would still like to have a collection of their garbage moderation to point to tho, well if people cut out all the CSAM that is!

Can we feed chunks of reddit into it too?

We should probably make a universal one along the lines of "fine with silicon valley" o something!

The mainly automated moderation on FB and Twit were infuriating when I used them, yes. I was suspended twice on Twit (pre-musk) for fairly innocuous comments. Meanwhile, when I reported literal death threats, I’d get back the message “we reviewed this and it didn’t violate our community standards”. At this point I deleted my Twat account and haven’t signed into FB in 4 years.

I deleted the app too ! But Facebook is hard for me to give up because I have friends from all over the world to stay in touch with, and it is the simplest way.

Mind you I have persevered and gotten a lot of Nazis banned from Facebook.

Why not have your friends join lemmy, start a new community around live journaling here and enjoy the freedom of expression y’all crave.

This will accomplish 2 things:

  1. Take revenue away from Facebook

  2. Helps increase user share for lemmy.

This way you all have the same interests working to your advantage

That's actually a really good idea.

I do get them once in a while. Although, they tend to be fat and few between. Lol

I'm all for more Lemmy. Love this place.

Delete your account.

Reach out to the people you only talk to through Facebook and give them your contact information.

It'll be awkward and you might lose some people, but every person who quits makes it easier for everyone else to quit. Quitting is better for your health and happiness.

Being an active Facebook user in 2023, after everything- and your prime complaint is that you couldn't share a photo on it. May the flying spaghetti monster have mercy on your worthless soul.

I had similar situation with facebook. In a discussion, I posted a single comment about election results with numbers, percentages and a link to official governmental website containing that very same data, with attached screenshot of it for lazy ones. Facebook informed me that the comment violates spam rules and will be removed. No edit possibility, no peace talks, just removed. At the same time there are profiles loaded with hate speech, bigotry, racism and disinformation for years, and no automod, no algorithm was triggered.

That moment I sad fuck your algorithms, fuck your data, fuck your website, I can live without it. Just pulled the plug and deleted the account. I don't need that hate-machine to keep in touch with my friends. And as long as people says 'but my friends are there', facebook will continue to roll hatred fueling algorithms and never change. No mockery, no subreddits or lemmy communities will change it, but every user less - may lead to a change, or better, a downfall.

Just delete the account.

edit: and try to watch the social dilemma documentary.

Facebook says this guy's photo is absolutely fine by them. https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100086229708504&mibextid=ZbWKwL

I hate it so much but I have so many old Livejournal friends I'd miss.

I have been extremely addicted to Facebook for a very long time, even though I knew it was a cesspool. The main thing that had kept me there, was that I was running a photography business on the side, and Facebook was unfortunately a great way for clients to find me and reach out to me. I've started on a different adventure, and it was so incredibly freeing to blast my Facebook account away yesterday.

I do still miss seeing live updates for the people that I care most about, but Facebook can definitely get fucked, and definitely should die.

Good for you. I hope it feels great.

Thank you! It definitely does :)

Years ago I noticed a picture my niece had liked that was a couple of her friends jumping on their bed in only underwear. The girls were probably 11 or 12 so I reported it as inappropriate. A few days later Facebook replied to my request that the pictures were not against the TOS. I couldn't fuckin believe that. I encouraged my niece to suggest that the pictures be removed before a pervert found them. That was what finally worked but I suspect those girls probably thought I was the pervert.

You're a good uncle. Facebook literally said a picture of a woman's coochie was fine to me once last month.

I mean... you're not wrong, but it's like you're breathlessly telling us about this incredible new thing you've discovered called the internet.

Do you want to talk about Livejournal? I had one.

Not that modern stuff let's talk about Geocities! 🚧

I had four of them!

Damn digital landlords buying up our geocities

I miss web rings.

I miss my websites compiled of nothing but pixelated gifs

Me too. I fully deleted it because jokes about child abuse don't hit the same way these days.

How would I know what people's wordle scores are then?

That's a fair point. Do you care lol?

I don't know why FB won't let us block that crap. If I didn't care about wordle before do they think pounding me with it 24/7 is going to make me change my mind?

I'd rather not see it either.

Can we see that smoking hot stamp in question?

Lemmy isn't letting me upload it for some reason, but it's this: https://lm.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fstore.usps.com%2Fstore%2Fproduct%2Fbuy-stamps%2Fred-fox-stamps-S_122104%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR1Ui6EykBS3E2n0ftoVG9Hylj8r3Vzh7oK_dnfGQiBHbc9OdS99bvaN0SE&h=AT16qe653DHQhshQHPkFZVpaJYoIXezguSvYZ0YtAO08MqETl69WeevVVJlMct2n4DhuakPxMLZlEGO-WMTup1E2utcVuUaaRljwsvU_ewTVQqYIst9iLE5N6zgWW3jlyA

It's a running joke between my friends. I am in a bunch of sovereign citizen groups because they're so entertaining and crazy, and we are trying to convince them all that they need fox stamps on all their bonkers correspondence to be official, just for the laughs.

Your link didn't work for me. You might try uploading it to imgur and then sharing that link. In the meantime I'm looking at image search results for "Fox stamp" and wondering which one is the smuttiest.

Does this work? https://imgur.com/a/28WGVD6

Pretty smoking hot right?

Seriously they tried to ban me for a fox head.

"I hate Facebook"

Why Would You Say Something So Controversial Yet So Brave?

I understand the intention but it's not necessarily a platform thing. Lemmy has the same type of people, just in smaller concentrations due to it being less used.

As an example, I was called a fucking moron, a nazi and told "Fuck you" over a simple discussion over graffiti by a real gem on Lemmy. Until his participation, nobody was hostile or angry and throughout equating me with a group of people that perpetuated the holocaust because I disagreed with his stance on something so innocuous, the group mods seem to be chill with it and apparently enough people also felt my stance put me in Nazi territory because he got some upvotes.

My point only being, there are terrible people on any platform that are incapable of having a discussion without becoming the lowest common denominator and the platforms (Lemmy included) generally won't feel the need to take action. It's just part of the charm of the internet. We could just as easily create a /c/ for Lemmy stuff that shouldn't be ok but is.

I have a couple of reasons I still use Facebook, although I don't like it at all: My brother, who lives on the other side of the country, has ASD and the only two ways I could stay in touch with him is on Quora, where he only wants to stay on-topic, or Facebook. And I'm at least an hour's drive away from most of the people I know, so it's also one of the only ways I keep in touch with them, because they apparently don't have the problem with Facebook I do.

That said, I block every ad even though I have to do it manually, and I don't join any groups, other than a couple that I just read for the comic strips, or argue with strangers. I keep my Facebook use to a minimum, essentially.

Edit: I take that back. I didn't block the ad for the build-your-own wooden hurdy-gurdy kit. How could I?

Lol how could you?

Is he willing to use Discord? We created a channel for our family and it's perfect for communicating with a select group of people.

Nope. He wants what he knows and nothing else.

Can we not abandon facebook to be reclaimed by nature? I haven't been on that site in years

It'll be overrun with broken links to terrible fake news and Minions memes as it slowly rots into the earth.

I believe it's difficult to fire things into the sun because of gravitational dynamics. It'd apparently be easier to fire Facebook into interstellar space.

Like my grandma always said, if you want a box hurled into the sun, you got to do it yourself.

God rest her zombie bones.

I reported a meme from a prominent anti EU group a while back in which they were calling the leader of Ireland a leprechaun. Complete with a photoshop of him in a green suit and everything. Extremely racist, but apparently fine.

I'm convinced all their mods are Patriot Front.

If you know it, why use it? Just move on.

I used to use Livejournal and as a result still have friends from all around the world from it. I'd lose touch with them if I did.

Couldn't agree more.

Zuckerberg is going to end up trying to become the king of Hawaii.

I think I’m ootl.. why Hawai‘i?

cause that's where he lives probably.

I deactivated my account over a year ago. I only use it strictly for messaging and that's because I can't get my family members to switch to something else.

Maybe I should delete and just keep messenger.

What a hot take

All our trash should be shot into space or the sun and not littered on our plant, but that's just me

Ackshually it takes a lot of fuel to send something sunwards.

What others have suggested; just abandon it.

Yes

I like the initiative, but isn't facebook basically dying? As far as I know it's only corporations, nazis and qanons left. Even the boomers started leaving. I might be wrong though. It's been a while since I cared to check on facebook.

All in all that would make a great source for bad photo's

I don't know that it's dying but still it's a force of evil and I'd like to fight back.

My social circle (aside from me) use it for event planning and marketplace

Aksually itsh meta now you plebian

Gosh I feel badly. Wait no. I def don't.

I swear to God, I have zero idea what version you all use of Facebook. It's really not that bad unless your friends are assholes.

I deleted my Facebook in 2011. That's right, 12 years ago. It was bad then, I can't even imagine what a pile of shit it is now. It's all about perspective. You probably can't remember a time before Facebook existed, but I do.

15 years ago I had a Facebook account for about a month. My brother became a father over the weekend and I sent him a congrats message. Come in Monday and my coworker knew about it. "Yeah I am deleting this shit right fucking now".

You probably can't remember a time before Facebook existed, but I do.

Oh man, calling someone young on the internet to further your argument, you are old lol. I also used Facebook back in 2011, it also wasn't bad if your friends weren't assholes. I don't know what the hell you people are doing on Facebook either.

I'm like early 40s and a systems engineer for a company who builds oss software. I'm not og neckbeard, but I had a 2400 baud modem. I thought I had plenty of perspective 🤷‍♂️.

You're just a baby!

The wild stories and backgrounds you people invent when people disagree.

My first modem was 2400 baud on prodigy and I was using irc+ usenet well before torrents were a thing. I recall the pre aol internet, phpbbs, Internet forums, and my steam account ends in an hotmail.com. I was on og face book when it was college only. I think my perspective and recollection is just fine.

I don't use Facebook, but it introduced a friend of mine to a neo nazi group. Probably from a shared interest in wwii history, but that's all it takes for the algorithm to do its thing. He rejected it so we're clear.

I mean, Facebook is how I found out that one guy who I was very friendly with was actually a supporter of the BNP.

unless your friends are assholes

yeah, the pandemic kind of brought how much of an asshole everyone around me truly was... and now I don't use meta.

Nudity is an easy one, nobody will be annoyed if you decide to remove nudity from your platform, especially if it's in an attempt to avoid CSAM. Even here most instances accept a large margin of error to do so.

Not everyone agrees that swastika tattoos should be removed from online platforms. It's not even just nazis, free speech absolutists will totally disagree with the message, but still argue that they have a right to post it.

I don't agree that shit should be left up personally, but I also don't think Meta should be the one deciding what can and can't be posted on their platforms aside from the obvious violence and nudity. Crazy thing is they actually agree. They've been lobbying governments to regulate social media content moderation for ages, but nobody will touch it and look like they're going after "free speech".

So wait... you're telling me that if you owned a social media platform, it shouldn't be left up to YOU what people post on that platform? Am I understanding this correctly?

We're not talking a Lemmy instance here, Facebook has 3 billion users. No, I don't think they should be deciding what people can and can't post there.

Edit: Wow, very surprised at the immediate response on here. Lemmy's favourite thing is shitting on Facebook, but you want them to globally decide which content can and can't be shared? Lol alright

I'd love to hear your explanation of "free speech".

I don't agree that shit should be left up personally

Did you actually read my comment before replying? I'm not a "free speech absolutist", I think they're bullshit, but I also don't think Meta should be the one who decides where that line is.

So Meta should allow all speech then? If they are not to be deciding where the line is?

I've already pretty clearly said that governments should regulate this, not Meta. How could you even interpret my comments to mean "allow everything"?

I'm guessing this bullshit line of questioning is an attempt to convince yourself that I'm the type of person you've already decided I am in your head, which is pretty fucking lame. Not everyone has to live in political extremes.

the government shouldn't regulate speech either. you're exactly the kind of person i pegged you to be.

I'd love to hear your explanation of "free speech".

Facebook is allowed to remove whatever they want, if you don’t like it so much start your own Facebook and try to compete with them. If your product is better you will win in the marketplace

So let me get this straight: your image of an animal is blocked due to some dumb bug- so the appropriate response is to post an image of some dude with a swastika?

Let me ask you: what would you do if you broke an arm? I am curious to see your train of thought.

He didn't post a picture of a guy with a swastika. He reported one posted by someone else.

the appropriate response is to post an image of some dude with a swastika?

Reread that again. He said reported not reposted.
