Taking over abandoned(?) community?

Hi @admin@lemmy.ca, the mods of ndp@lemmy.ca don't seem to be active on Lemmy for more than a year: @leftwingmememachine@lemmy.ca and @MarkG_108@lemmy.ca and the community has a pretty dated banner and pinned posts. Since the new leadership, it's becoming more active, so I want to volunteer to help run it. Is there a process to do it?
We have a specific community for requests like these: communityrequests@lemmy.ca
But we typically give the current mods 5 days to respond, and if we don't hear, then we can appoint you as a new mod.
And just to be clear, you don't need to make another post on that community, it's just for future reference!
So we will wait to see if any of the mods have any objections. Thanks!
