Natsu Basho 2026 - Day 9

1mon 19h ago by lemmy.zip/u/tigeruppercut in sumo

I flinched at that WMH Kirishima tachi-ai headbutt. That looked so painful. I wonder whose blood that was on Kiri's face afterwards. I hope neither of them are concussed.

I think the tachiai headbutt was just a glancing blow but it's hard to see with the camera angle. I thought the blood came from Kiri scraping his forehead as he went face first over the ring. Hopefully just a scrape and not from a solid face plant.

Takerufuji up visiting from juryo makes quick work of Oshoumi forcing him off the ring.

Wakanosho aggressive off the tachiai but Roga parries him to the side and to the tawara, but when he moves in Waka defends the incoming shove that puts Roga off balance and he's slapped down from there.

Mitakeumi immediately taken to the edge and survives by parrying to the side but it only buys him another two seconds as Fujiryoga squares up and pushes him out.

Kotoeiho and Tobizaru have an energetic match thrusting and slapping each other around until the Monkey tries slapping down Koto's arms, which gives him to position he needs to shove the Monkey flying off the dohyo for the second day in a row.

Shishi opens the day's henka-ing against Tamawashi, who somersaults his way off the ring.

Ura takes a defensive stance and waits for Tokihayate's incoming tachiai, stopping him in his tracks. One of the shinpan puts a hand up while they have their initial clash and the gyoji stops the match. Looks like he didn't think Ura got his hand down to start, which usually isn't enforced all that strictly. On restart after the initial clash Ura takes a two handed drag on Toki's left arm which he uses to get behind for the rear force out.

Abi with strong tsuppari against Hakunofuji initially but Haku survives the onslaught but Abi tries a weak slap down and then retreats where Haku easily pushes him over the ropes.

Nishikifuji switched from looking for the belt to locking an overarm arm bar and using it to throw Fujiseiun to the dirt.

Oshoma with a strong tachiai that takes Churanoumi back but Chura responds with a fierce slapping assault that moves Oshoma back across the ring and out.

Yoshinofuji finds double unders off the line and Oho tries to counter with arm bars but his positioning isn't great and Yoshi muscles his way through them to put Oho over the bales without much trouble.

Hiradoumi and Takanosho start out slapping each other but Taka redirects Hira's head to one side, then when he tries to recover does the same in the other direction and Hira goes tumbling across the ring.

Fujinokawa and Ichiyamamoto immediately go for a slap match that Ichi turns into a pull down attempt that knocks Fuji off balance. When he recovers and turns back Ichi puts both hands on his face and drives which Fuji tries to escape to the side near the bales. As Ichi moves in Fuji tries to slap him past but it's not enough as Ichi pushes him out. Great fast-paced sumo here from both wrestlers but Ichi was largely in control of the whole match.

Wakatakakage and Kotoshoho have a strong tachiai where neither find a belt initially, then WTK gets an outside grip and circles but Koto is already driving and puts WTK out without any trouble.

Another slapfest between Atamifuji and Daieisho but when Daiei circles and disengages to get some space Atami continues the shoving until Daiei is against the straw and out.

Kirishima and Wakamotoharu look for hand position off the line and they both end up with arm bars, though WMH has a deep overhand on his right while Kiri has a shallower one on the other side. As WMH makes his drive Kiri pivots and puts his opponent near the bales where WMH makes a last ditch effort throw that lands him on his back but sends Kiri soaring over the top and into the crowd. He walks back into the ring to pick up his kachikoshi with a bloody forehead.

Gonoyama starts his initial drive against Kotozakura with some belly bumping reminiscent of Kotoshogiku. As the ozeki's foot touches the tawara he fights back and brings Gono to the bales but Gono slips him by and sends Koto to the dirt just before he steps out. It's close so a matta is called, but the decision is upheld and Gono walks away with the stacks of cash. The ozeki at 2-7 is not stepping up here to shine without the yokozuna.

Good one today. Matches of the day for me are Gono/Koto, Kiri/WMH, and Fuji/Ichi.

Kiri still stands alone 8-1 with several 7-2s nipping at his heels.

Takerufuji up visiting from juryo makes quick work of Oshoumi forcing him off the ring.

Good to see Takerufuji again! Oh fam I still remember the day he seriously injured his shoulder, and then how he tried to fight with it injured... it was terrible. Hopefully he's completely recovered. Plus, I really like this portrait of him, he looks cocky like the "bad kid" of the class who just got caught doing some prank.

Shishi opens the day’s henka-ing against Tamawashi, who somersaults his way off the ring.

REALLY, Shishi? Henka against Tamawashi? The Tamawashi who hasn't won a match yet this tourney, and who went 5-10 the last two tourneys? I'm kinda neutral on henkas in general, but in this case it was uncalled for.

I hope Kirishima's OK; the scrape looks pretty superficial but he seemed to be wincing, hope he didn't hurt his neck or get a concussion or something. That last push was a great effort on his part!

Good to see Takerufuji again!

I got to see one of the parades they had for Takerufuji after his yusho, and ever since I've been wondering when he'll manage to claw his way back to makuuchi.

REALLY, Shishi?

Well, he was coming off a 3 day losing streak himself. Probably wasn't feeling too confident today.

I got to see one of the parades they had for Takerufuji after his yusho, and ever since I’ve been wondering when he’ll manage to claw his way back to makuuchi.

His record is just painful to look at. A brilliant start, then injury. Slowly coming back then more injury. He's been pulling 8-7s in Juryo and seems poised to do better this time and probably make it back to Makuuchi and I hope the best for him. But it just goes to show how injury can derail even the most accomplished wrestler.

Well, [Shishi] was coming off a 3 day losing streak himself. Probably wasn’t feeling too confident today.

Shishi's pretty familiar with losing streaks, tho. And I don't know how henka-ing the oldest (?) wrestler in Makuuchi is gonna build his confidence. Beating Tamawashi head-to-head woulda done that better.

the oldest (?) wrestler in Makuuchi

Just for curiosity's sake I had a look at the wiki page and Tamawashi's the oldest currently but there's a guy Yoshiazuma who made top division in 2011 and fell out after 2012 and he's still wrestling in jonidan at 48.

There was also this dude Hanakaze who retired in 2022 at the age of 51, but he peaked at sandanme. What a crazy life bro must've had spending 35 years in the stables.

Wow that's awesome. They're basically warrior-monks.
