Community Request Thread
3y 24d ago by programming.dev/u/snowe in meta@programming.devPlease comment with what communities you would like to be added here.
For mod creation I need both the url style name (experienced_devs) and the Display name (Experienced Devs)
Saw that a python community is still missing. Currently getting more and more into it, so would be nice.
Can we have something like nostupidquestions but for computer science/software engineering topics? Would be very helpful for beginners and could probably be a pool where people can ask stupid questions without fear.
Suggestion for a programmer humor community similar to r/ProgrammerHumor (display name Programmer Humor slug can be something like programmerhumor or programmer_humor)
Hey! Can we have one for Go as well?
What about a community for programming teachers? I work as a computer teacher in what in Spain is called Professional Studies. We teach IT in general (hardware, databases, programming, networking...), and maybe it could be nice to have a community where teachers and general programmers can meet and help to layout the best ways to teach new programmers.
Editing to add:
Url: teach_programming
Display Name: Teach Programming
Could we get a CSharp community? So /c/csharp, display name C# (or C Sharp)
Would love one for javascript if possible.
I'd love to see a functional programming community (url name: fp , display name FunctionalProgramming). I'm most interested in Haskell, but it might be best to start with a larger umbrella and split into smaller communities if/when there's a sufficiently large userbase to justify it.
I think elsewhere it was mentioned that there's a 3-character limit on the urls, perhaps fp-langs?
perhaps functional-programming. That would be more inclusive of people doing functional programming in languages that might not necessarily be considered "fp languages".
Created over at https://programming.dev/c/functional_programming!If you post in the community I'll make you a mod if you want
I'm working on getting the 3 character url limit removed, but probably will be a while...
Could we get a sysadmin community please?
And a privacy community?
Thanks
Made them here: https://programming.dev/c/sysadminand https://programming.dev/c/privacyafter thinking a bit more
If you make a post and let me know I can make you a mod if you want
I would like too add neovim/Neovim community.
As a fellow neovim user, great idea! :) I've added it! If you post there I can make you mod if you want :)
Could we get programminghorror (Programming Horror) please? I've got some content to post 😆
Created at https://programming.dev/c/programming_horror, If you want to be a mod for it make a post in the community and let me know
I'm not a local programming.dev resident, but I'd be interested in a code golf community.
It could be really fun to host/participate in challenge threads, and posts about some fun golfs.
Created! code_golf@programming.dev I love code golf!
C++!
cpp and C++ I guess?
Created over at https://programming.dev/c/cpp!If you post in it I'll make you a mod if you want
What happened here? I saw it yesterday, but seems to be gone again?
huh yeah thats weird, I couldnt find it in the community list but I can see it from https://programming.dev/c/cpp@programming.dev
Looking into getting that fixed, for now the link I posted in the other message works to see it if you want to post to it
Tried unsubscribing and subscribing again, and now it's in "Subscribe Pending" state
seems to be fine now
CSCareerQuestions with this exact URL, please. I searched for this name on the programming.dev instance and was led to this comment that suggests ask_experienced_devs is a replacement for CSCQ, but /r/CSCQ had a different focus from /r/experienceddevs. Junior developers and interns were also allowed to contribute to CSCQ and the discussions were specifically focused on finding work in the CS industry, while ask_experienced_devs implies that any kind of question directed at senior devs is allowed.
CSMajors (discussion for CS undergrads) and an EngineeringResumes (rate my resume) equivalent would also be great to see.
Alright I can make a new one for it. For URL all of the current URLs in the instance are snake case so it would be made with cs_career_questions as the slug (but display name matches that text)
CSMajors https://programming.dev/c/cs_majors
CS Career Questions https://programming.dev/c/cs_career_questions
Engineering Resumes https://programming.dev/c/engineering_resumes
If you want to be a mod for any of them make a post in the community and let me know
I support this request, that would be great
Can we have a general cloud engineering community? Something encompassing the Azure/AWS/GCS and others for news, Instructables etc. /c/loud would be perfect :)
Some playtesting communities for game Dev Playmygame, destroymygame Would be great
Created at https://programming.dev/c/play_my_gameand https://programming.dev/c/destroy_my_game, If you make a post and let me know I can make you a mod if you want
Thank you , will do it now. What happens if there are other communities like that already in the fediverse? Nevermind there is none. Just checked
Ive modded you on both. If you dm me on matrix https://matrix.to/#/@ategon:matrix.orgI can invite you to mod chats there.
If theres ever duplicate communities it just gives people options for which one they want to participate in if they dont like how one is being handled, etc. Theres four main programming communities around and they all have different moderation teams, rules, instances they federate with, etc.
Thank you I'll put up a side bar soon
A general webdev one would be nice, I think we could match the Reddit naming convention of using just Webdev and webdev
Would love to see a Flutter community!
Should we have a "General" or "Other" community as well? Possibly "random"
Can we have commandline (both url and display name)? In order to share recommendations & news about software that runs on the terminal, without a UI.
Done! https://programming.dev/c/commandline
Post in it and I'll mod you if you want :)
Thanks, I can help moderating it.
Done! :)
+1 (hopefully will get pinged when created)
Done! https://programming.dev/c/commandline
Post in it and I’ll mod you if you want :)
Can we get a community for esoteric languages? Maybe “esolangs” for the url to copy the old subreddit, and Esoteric Languages for the display name?
I second this
Created at https://programming.dev/c/esolangs,if you want to be a mod for it make a post and let me know
Sure thing! I’m willing to be a mod for it, and I made a post in the community
modded
I have some ideas:
postgresqlPostgreSQLastroAstronuxtNuxtwasmWebAssembly
https://programming.dev/c/webassemblyhttps://programming.dev/c/postgresql https://programming.dev/c/astrohttps://programming.dev/c/nuxt If you make a post in a community and let me know I can make you a mod if you want
Done!
Modded
Thank you
+1 for Postgres! Would be happy to help with moderating that one.
Hi, You need to post something in community to me modded.
Perhaps a Git community would also make sense. URL: git, Display name: Git. I can be the mod for now just to get it started. But I think I would rather hand it over to someone else when the community grows.
Created at https://programming.dev/c/git, to be modded just need a post in the community for lemmy to allow it
Done
Modded
Would also be happy to help with git@programming.dev , will post there shortly.
Modded
I wonder if there would be some interest in looking into DDD (Domain Driven Design) here. I intend to study the topic and wouldn't mind some company :) I can also serve as the mod, if that's a necessity.
URL style name: ddd
Display name: Domain Driven Design
I think that's a fantastic idea. ddd@programming.dev and yes if you are willing to be mod then it would be great, otherwise we'll post in the other thread to find a mod. Just make a post and let me know if you want to be modded
I made an initial post. I can be the mod. I will try to gather my notes together to get the community started. Hopefully others will join soon.
Request for a Godot community (godot and Godot for slug and display name). There's one over in lemmy.ml but that one is rather dead and figure it makes more sense to have it in here
Could we get terraform and pulumi?
Created at https://programming.dev/c/terraformand https://programming.dev/c/pulumi, If you make a post and let me know I can make you a mod if you want
Done. I can mod both of them.
Modded
Request for a general (Unix) shell community! (shell and Shell Scripting) I made shell@itjust.works, so you can tell my intentions if you read the sidebar there. I'm having issues making posts there, though, and this instance makes more sense. I'm a current mod at /r/bash, and intend to reach out to the mods of sister subreddits if they want to join.
I originally was intending on all shell languages, but since we now have powershell, I'd be fine with restricting it to Unix shells. I don't know pwsh or batch well anyway, I'd have to ask pwshguy to help!
Why not lang-specific communities like bash?
- Scripting fundamentals translate very well between languages, not to mention tools like awk, jq, and others are common to many.
- In practice, there was a far more overlap than not within the different subreddits; both users and content.
If you disagree with combining sister languages as a policy, that's fine! I'd request both bash/The Bourne-Again Shell and zsh/The Z Shell.
Anyone else game for a Django community? I can help mod if you need.
Got a django community created at https://programming.dev/c/django.If you make a post or comment I can mod you
Can we have one for LaTeX (both url and display name)? Thanks!
\mbox{Seconded!}
Created at https://programming.dev/c/latex.The slug needed to be all lowercase but the display name is set to LaTeX. If you want to be a mod for it let me know and make a post
Thanks, I posted there.
Modded
Can we get one for engineering management?
Url: engineering_managers
Display name: Engineering Managers
Done! Can you post there and I'll make you mod. engineering_managers@programming.dev
Done!
modded! good luck!
dotnet community would be nice. Display name .NET. And I could moderate it as well.
Edit: We should have docker Docker too.
Done in c/dotnet!
On c/docker..., sorry if I was a bit unclear, I was more referring to the proposal to create a Docker community. unfortunately, it seems to me that I don't have enough experience in both Docker and community moderation to be a good mod in c/docker.
Nice, modded! That's fine :) If you change your mind just let me know :)
Thanks!
Can we get a "Svelte" community, for all things Svelte and SvelteKit - url name (sveltejs) display name (SvelteJS).
sorry, I never responded! it looks like Ategon handled it for you.
I think we should have linux community, display Linux
Created over at https://programming.dev/c/linux!If you want to be a mod let me know and make a post in the community
I'd like a programming language and compiler community like r/ProgrammingLanguages: recent developments, personal projects, opinions and ideas, and general questions
Display name: Programming Languages
URL: ProgrammingLanguages
created at https://programming.dev/c/programming_languages.If you want to be a mod let me know and make a post in the community (for Lemmy to allow me to mod you)
Thanks! I made a post
modded
I think we should have opensource, display Open Source community
Just to note if unaware there is already:
So, not sure if splintering the community more is such a wise decision.
I don't see it necessarily a bad thing tho, yes the bigger community will attract more people, but smaller ones like in this instance can have more niche, more closed interaction. We're not trying to compete here, users can subscribe to multiple community if needed. On Reddit it's the same, r/art and there's r/art2 and so on. If one turns bad, there's still a community for people to move to.
can we get laravel please?
Created at https://programming.dev/c/laravel, If you want to be a mod for it make a post in the community and let me know
I was looking for a Laravel community, already asked about it on c/php. I could mod that if the other guy agrees or is not available.
Considering its been five days and I typically add two mods anyways I can add you to it. You just need a post in the community for lemmy to give me the option to
@mjpc13@programming.dev , would you like to pair up again to form a !/c/robotics community?
I'm thinking it'd be nice to have a community to post about general robotics news. media, and events that are unrelated to ROS. Perhaps something like a smaller informal version of https://www.robotics-worldwide.org/,but maybe not so academic. So, a little more community oriented and general dev oriented, where folks could re-post maker like robotics content like this:
- The Fastest Maze-Solving Competition On Earth
- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMQbHMgK2rw
- Videos like this don't have anything to do with ROS, as none of the competitors are using that middleware software.
So far for !/c/ros , I've been hesitant to divert ROS specific traffic away from their existing online platforms; as soliciting direct questions or discussions could fragment the already-small ROS community from their official sites. Yet !/c/ros might be a bit too narrow in scope for the example content above.
@Ategon@programming.dev , suppose this'd still be in scope of this instance?
- URL style name:
robotics - Display name:
Robotics
yeah that should be fine
Ive made it here https://programming.dev/c/robotics
Make sense. I'll make a comment so you can add me as a mod
A TrueNAS community would be nice.
/c/truenas TrueNAS
Created!
Could we get an Angular community (angular)?
Created at https://programming.dev/c/angular, If you make a post and let me know I can make you a mod if you want
Thanks, I'd be delighted to moderate the community.
Modded
I have no experience with it, but I noticed there is no community for Julia (both url and display name). The locked down subreddit had almost 23,000 subscribers (if you build it, they will come ;) ).
Created at https://programming.dev/c/julia
I have some experience with Julia (not extensive) I can help to mod if it is added.
Community is up at https://programming.dev/c/julia
How about a perl community? I think just ‘perl’ and ‘Perl’ for the names.
Ive created it at https://programming.dev/c/perl. If you want to be a mod for it let me know and make a post in it
I skipped the "let me know" part, I would like to be a mod there.
Modded
Thanks!
"inexperienced devs" or whatever cscareerquestions equivalent.
created at https://programming.dev/c/data_engineering
Can we get the C programming language?
Maybe a typescript one too?
c_lang@programming.dev and typescript@programming.dev have been created! Do you want to be mod of both?
sure. I'm still new to typescript, hopefully that's ok. I guess you you need me to make a post on them?
Yep you just need either a post or a comment for lemmy to allow you to be modded
ok, made a couple posts
modded
thanks! I don't see it yet, might take a little to federate.
could I also suggest a regex community please?
Created at https://programming.dev/c/regex
This is really strange. the modding still hasn't been federated. I can't see that i'm a mod on my instance
Weird, I guess lemmy cant handle it very well
I'm mod on a couple other federated communities, it's just these that don't work. very strange! I don't really know what to do lol. maybe try unmodding and remodding? i'm not too bothered about modding the communities unless you want me to.
removed and readded you to c. Maybe you have to do something like search for the community in the search bar to get it to update in your instance
Ok, the modding for the typescript community has just federated. But the C one hasn't??? maybe just leave it a bit. maybe it'll work there too?
Thank you 👍
Display name: Kubernetes
URL: kubernetes
Done! Post in it and I'll mod you if you want :)
Done!
Nice! Done :)
Howdy, another “new instance” admin just cruising by your instance to check it out, looks cool and a great focus! If you have Experienced Devs probably good to have Junior Devs too, or one focused on learning resources.
Hi. I'm interested in android community.
Url can be: android
Thank you!
Are you thinking about Android development specifically? Or just Android in general? I just created /c/android_dev for Android development.
Well it's programming.dev so I thought that c/android would be appropriate name for development specific community. But since android_dev is already created I see no point in duplicating communities. If programming.dev allow non-development topics (like android news, ecosystem, etc), we can repurpose c/android for such things. If not then you can ignore my request.
It's a good point, I'm not 100% sure how we will move forward with that but I think in this case keeping those communities separate makes sense. I wouldn't mind having communities that are not 100% development specific on here.
A datascience community would be awesome.
Would love a PowerShell or at least general scripting/automation community
I'd like to request a developer-specific Android community - a la r/androiddev. The existing Android one is more about the ecosystem, not about development.
Created! If you post in /c/android_dev I'll make you a mod if you want :)
A Clojure community would be cool
url: clojure
display: Clojure
Created over at https://programming.dev/c/clojure!If you make a post in it I can make you mod if you want
Hi, would love to have a general Swift programming community, which will host the general discussion of Swift, SwiftUI, Xcode...etc for developing Apple ecosystem apps and tools.
url: swift
I've created it over at https://programming.dev/c/swift!If you make a post I can make you be a mod if you want
I would mod it, no problem.
Alright ive added you as a mod
Would something like /r/baduibattles fit here?
It's gone private but here are some examples of the type of content:
https://goulartnogueira.github.io/BadUI/
Just people making silly UIs for fun.
Yeah it can fit, ive created the community over at https://programming.dev/c/bad_ui_battles.If you want to be a mod let me know and make a post (so Lemmy will let you be modded)
Thanks! Happy to be a mod, I’ve made a welcome post.
Alright ive added you
I am an actual mod and creator of /r/baduibattles, may i be given modship there as well?
yeah sure, just make a post or comment in the community there for lemmy to let me mod you
Done
Alright ive added you to it
/c/asm (Assembly)
/c/ide (IDE)
A Kubernetes community would also be interesting, if its more development focused.
So url style (kubernetes) and displayname (Kubernetes)
/c/emacs Emacs
/c/lisp LISP (before it eventually splits off into elisp, cl, scheme, racket, etc. communities)
Ive created both at https://programming.dev/c/emacsand https://programming.dev/c/lisp.If you want to be a mod let me know and make a post in the community (for Lemmy to allow me to mod you)
Created at https://programming.dev/c/rails. If you want to be a mod for it make a post in the community and let me know
Ok, I'm gonna do it. I can already hear the banter 🫣
java/Java
already created! java@programming.dev
You're right! I see that now! I'm trying to join it, but it's not showing up from my home instance. (Federated newbie, here). I'll figure it out eventually 🙃
Thanks!
If you type java@programming.dev into the search bar then it should let you navigate to it (the search will return nothing but links to it will then work)
Got it! 🎉
Is it worth considering Spring (and/or Spring Boot) as its own slice? I could see arguments for and against it... Any fellow Java devs have strong feelings one way or another?
For the moment, the java instance does not have enough posts. I don't see the need to split it even further.
Can we get a "V" community? "Vlang" will also work.
Done! https://programming.dev/c/vlang
Post in it and I'll mod you if you want :)
Posted. Thank you!
Modded :)
Display name: Nix / NixOS

@erlingur@programming.dev could you have a look a this?

Post in it and I'll mod you if you want :)
Thx, done.
Modded! :)
I would like one for DevOps and Cloud or for Cloud Specifics like AWS, Google Cloud and Azure, but i don't have time to mod, have a lot on my plate already ^^
Theres a devops community at https://programming.dev/c/devopsand a cloud one at https://programming.dev/c/loud
Thanks, missed them when i was looking, a lot of new stuff to learn XD
I would like a community for useful, hype-free, programming-oriented discussion about AI.
We could call it “Actually Useful AI” (URL name: “actually_useful_ai” (but I’m open to other suggestions).
I can also moderate it if needed.
EDIT: the URL name could also be "auai", probably it's better to keep it short.
Created at https://programming.dev/c/auai,if you make a post ill add you
Thank you! I’ve just made a post.

I'd be willing to moderate an emulation community, at least while it gets up and going. Maybe "Emulator Development" "emudev"?

Should we make a programmer hiring community as I can't seem to find one and it seems like a good thing ('dev_hiring') ('Developer Hiring')
Currently theres an INAT community created which fills the same niche https://programming.dev/c/inat
Hi there, I would like to request to open an XR dev community for AR/VR/MR related development.

Hi snowe,
Would it be possible to request a community for mercurial , ref: https://mercurial-scm.org/?
Thanks
hi, could you post in the community_request@programming.dev community? Sorry, we've pretty much stopped using this thread, and made it vote based now.
Sure, thanks for that and for the good work :)
Can we get the sysadmin community? And a privacy community?
Looks like @Ategon@programming.dev created it for you. Good luck!
I think we should have a ros community (display name ROS).
Created at https://programming.dev/c/ros!If you want to be a mod let me know and make a post in the community (for Lemmy to allow me to mod you)
Done
Yo can we get one minecraft 'mc_dev' 'Minecraft Development'
would you be ok with a more specific slug minecraft_dev? Several of us think that mc_dev is going to be less than ideal as the communities grow, one of us thought it was short for machine code dev
Yeah thats totally fine
Created! https://programming.dev/c/minecraft_dev.If you post there I can make you mod!

There is already a Ruby community but would you prefer a separate Rails one? Also /c/graphql is up. Post in it and I'll make you a mod if you want :)
Letting you know that theres now a rails community at https://programming.dev/c/rails
What about a general programming news community, kind of like Hacker News?
Currently general programming news has been getting posted in the programming community. I don't see much of a reason for separating it out but if it becomes an issue its something that could be done in the future
Is there a place here (whether a community or just a thread somewhere) for self promotion? Sort of a "show off what you've been working on this week" sort of deal?
Hm. I'm not sure. You could make a request in community_request@programming.dev and see if others are interested
AutoHotkey please.
Edit: URL can be ahk
Would love a voxel game development specific community, url name - (voxel_dev) and display name - (Voxel Game Dev)
Ive created it at https://programming.dev/c/voxel_dev!If you want to be a mod let me know and make a post in the community (for Lemmy to let me add)
I've posted, and sure go ahead and make me a mod.
Alright ive added you
thanks!
Voting for a Scala community, then :)
I don't know if we are limiting the frameworks we are covering, but I have r ally been enjoying Solid.js maybe URL(solid) display (Solid)?
Could we have a community on machineLearning ? It's quite programming related. If anybody knows another lemmy instance with a focus on this subject, I'm quite interested !
Display name: Machine Learning
URL: MachineLearning
edit : NVM, missed https://programming.dev/c/machine_learning
Yeah made it a bit after you asked then had to leave for a bit to go eat. If you want to be a mod on it let me know
Sure, but I'll only be able to moderate between 17h-23h Paris time. If that's not a problem, with pleasure.
Yeah thats fine, ive added
Thanks !
I'm a .NET developer myself, so a .NET community would be cool.
A mobile development focused, language / framework agnostic community would be cool. Or if it needs to be specific I'd like to see a React Native community.
/c/mobiledev | Mobile Development || /c/reactnative | React Native
Created a mobile development community at https://programming.dev/c/mobiledevand a react one at https://programming.dev/c/react

Great. Will wait to hear on wordpress.
im a member of a different instance so im not sure if im allowed to comment, but id like to see an equivalent to r/programmingcirclejerk, a sub thats buried in like 10 levels of irony.
i'd just like to interject for a moment
this is the thing I miss most from Reddit. Is that wrong?
raspberry_pi@programming.dev Created! comment/post and we'll make you mod
I would love to subscribe to this!! But I'm on beehaw.org and the link takes me to the programming.dev instance where I'm not logged in so I can't subscribe.
Edit: I found another link to it and subscribed. What a weird glitch.
so you got it working? 👍
I got it! Thanks
