A big problem of war/defense is the catastrophic effect it has on the environment. Would it be possible to decrease the effects on the environment through change of rules of engagement and developing more eco-friendly weaponry such as vehicles without hydrocarbons as fuel, kinetic weaponry etc. ?

It would be better if war wasn't necessary, but defending and acting against belligerent actors is still a necessity.
