After 10 years of work, modders have remade classic RPG Ultima Underworld in Unity with 3D models, new sound effects, and controller support

Cherished RPG Ultima Underworld has an unofficial Unity remake with 3D models, new sound effects, and controller support - it requires the original game data.
Ultima Underworld 1 & 2 are on sale as a package for 2.99 USD (50% off) for the next day.
The mod is free & made with love & passion.
It works, was easy AF to install and I'm currently trying it out.
I had to immediately come back to this post, give props & alert the masses; it's legit & it's mother-effing great.
Does it work under linux (smol gpu)?
I'm running on a custom model of WIN 10. I could try it on my raspberry in a bit & get back to ya on it (it runs a replicated Mint via Ubuntu)
I checked and the latest patch switched the emulation to dosbox for the official GOG build. DOSbox runs great on Ubuntu so I'm gonna go ahead and say at least the original game works on Linux. However, I'll have to get back to you on the mod. Currently I'm supposed to be recording a book about aquaponics.
Thanks! I'll wait a bit regardless because of the no keyboard stuff I think.
Yo, it's modded to work with a gamepad!!! The controls take a bit to get used to, but it's very worth the effort
Btw, my buddy says it worked for him on Kali; patch & all ( (which if true is impressive! Kali isn't for gaming at all))
It reminds me of when I first played Morrowind all those years ago. If you know what I'm talking about, you'll be happy you gave it the effort to get it going. Heck, I'll send you a keyboard mod. It's regression, as the gamepad mod adds to the experience a lot. You feel lost in a dungeon. It's perfect. Chef's kiss.
Well I'll just wait a bit, it's not like it's rocket science to drive a game by mouse/keyboard!
Edit: thanks for the Linux info, I hope it'll run directly on steam when I'm ready for it 😁
controller support
According to the Itch page it actually requires a controller at the moment, with other control schemes to come later.
Releasing a classic CRPG without keyboard and mouse support is certainly a choice...
That was a strange choice to not add KB+M support on release.
I think it will be updated soon.
Ugh gross, why Unity?
10 years of development... It was probably one of the most user friendly Dev kits when they started this.
Maybe in 5 years we'll start seeing passion projects like this in Godot
I feel like 10 years ago Unreal was still better.
Unreal engine has always been a bloated mess. Unity is a bloated mess of deprecated features and outdated documentation but atleast it's still faster and arguably still a better fit for the average indie game
Except Unity just doesn't work. That's my main problem with it, it has never run well on any computer I have owned in 15 years.
On top of that the Unity corporate are scum and always have been, hounding indie developers and attempting to charge new fees retroactively.
I have personally worked with both and that game engine never seemed like it was a good choice. Even on mid-end laptops, aside from rebuilding lighting, the Unreal editor was pretty fast to work with.
Unity corporate is indeed terrible. I wouldn't recommend anyone to get invested in Unity over Godot these days if they're new to game development.
Weird that you're having issues with it though, always worked well on the computers I've owned (both the editor and games using it)
