What is this community about?
17d 14h ago by piefed.blahaj.zone/u/catfeeder in dungeoncrawlers@piefed.blahaj.zoneHello, I made this community as a place for a subset of RPGs that usually end up in the shadow of more popular open-world RPGs, JRPGs and Souls-likes.
My definition of dungeon crawlers (that's, admittedly, stretching the definition a bit), is as follows:
- it takes place in a confined space (doesn't need to be a literal dungeons!),
- it puts a strong emphasis on combat and looting,
- and it offers little to no story.
This includes a broad variety of games and genres, such as:
- Blobbers (first-person party-based RPGs like Dungeon Master)
- Traditional roguelikes with procgen, permadeath and one controllable character, e.g. Nethack
- Some ARPGs like Diablo and King's Field
- Many unconventional indie titles like Osteoblasts, Ruadine or Divers (UFO 50 game)
And there are definitely other notable examples that I forgot to mention!
Does it include literature? Or do we have to get Princess Donut involved?
Well, if you can find books that 'offers little to no story' then sure go ahead ;)
Would the Mary Skelter trilogy and the PS2 Persona games count? In gameplay, they feel quite like dungeon crawlers, but have a surprisingly big amount of story.
They probably will better fit into jrpg@lemmy.zip
Even if they fit the gameplay motif, just with more story?
They seem to be fairly story-heavy to me, with the VN-style UI for dialogues and fleshed-out characters.
You can also make a post asking in the community if such games are fine - maybe I overestimated the importance of minimum story for the genre, who knows~
Torchlight series?
It looks to me like Diablo so it's welcome!
