@voxel @brave @privacy No thanks. There is a list of reasons why you should not use Brave: https://www.reddit.com/r/browsers/comments/1j1pq7b/list/_of/_brave/_browser/_controversies/
@OneOfThePetes @brave @privacy I'm aware of the reasons listed. The post you shared is quite subjective and only presents negative coverage of the Brave Browser. There are many reasons why someone, including me would want to use Brave instead of an alternative.
oh yeah hard pass on that one. When you have to release another version of your browser to remove all the crypto and other bullshit from your "free" version and then if you're not on a specific OS you have to PAY for said version...that's not a good look.
essentially "we're either going to nickle and dime you behind your back OR you can pay us and we'll just nickle and dime you to your face."
no i'm against software that slaps crypto bullshit in it as well as the several various other bullshit Brave has done.
calm down. you don't need to shill as hard as you're currently doing for a web browser.

I see. It seemed so, since you capitalized all letters of the word “PAY” which together with the rest of your statement, made it seem like you're against the idea of paid browser software.

I'm not “shilling” anything. In fact, I've contributed to other privacy-focused browsers like LibreWolf in the past. All I'm aiming for is to have a rational and truthful discussion.
Brave has done some things I think are interesting. Attempting to build its own search index, for one. But this is not one of them for me.
"...To enable it, go to Settings ⇾ System, scroll down to the bottom, and select the option to start using Brave Origin for free on Linux...."
Thanks for the tip! I was going to install Origin in 'parallel' with the standard version, to compare them but it's much easier in the way you suggested! Keep up the good work and ignore the negative posts...!!!
Lemmy me here: It's sad to see that many people have such a strong bias and seem incapable of engaging in thoughtful discussions and instead downvote every statement that doesn't fit their opinion, very disappointing.
Maybe so. But reputations are built over many years and destroyed very quickly, and Brave has always tried to walk a strange line when it comes to privacy. I honestly don't know what to make of the company. But at this point, I'd probably say the same of Mozilla.
That's why you shouldn't just look at the reputation, otherwise we wouldn't be using a lot of software.
@voxel@feddit.uk @voxel@infosec.space since you mentioned engaging in thoughtful discussion
I'm pretty tired of people sharing this, it is a very subjective article and misrepresents some facts. Like, in one the section they say he quit Mozilla, while in another that he got "kicked out".
Edit: I'm not trying to defend the actions of Brendan Eich, but mispresenting facts (likely intentional) is not something I'm okay with.
