Free Proton tier linux desktop client

12d 2h ago by feddit.dk/u/stenAanden in buyeuropean@feddit.uk

Is there any desktop client for Linux that can take free tier Proton?

Free tier proton what? Mail, VPN, pass?

I made a Proton mail on the free tier. But I can't connect using the Proton desktop email client, and I can't connect using Thunderbird on free tier either because you need to edit settings that are only available in paid Proton tier

They only offer mail access via external sources for their paid tier. It's not available on the free tier.

*for any platform

Their protonmail app should work, no? I think they have .deb and .rpm packages.

Their desktop app (for email) requires a paid plan as far as I can tell, so you need to use their web client instead. They do have a two week trial of the desktop client though, which is interesting.

I see, didn't know that. Their app is wrapped web-app btw anyway, so I guess using a browser is almost the same.

The protonvpn client on linux supports free tier accounts.

Electronmail

It looks like Proton Mail does not offer desktop client support on their free tier, and the use of something like Thunderbird with IMAP requires the paid tier exclusive Proton Bridge app. You will need to use their web client for email.

As for alternatives, I would go for an option that provides IMAP support without any sort of "lock in" like that of Proton or Tuta. I have used Disroot and Autistici and both have solid free tier plans, but they utilise manual verification. I currently use Autistici, but Disroot is good too and I'm sure there are plenty of other options, but just make sure to check their privacy policy and all that!

Disroot is a Dutch project that advocates for an open, decentralised web. They state that they do not collect or use your data for any purpose. They also host other services, like cloud storage and a SearXNG instance.

Autistici is an Italian group that is antifascist and against discrimination. They state that you cannot use their voluntary services if you do not share those principles. They will not host for commercial projects, institutions, political parties, and other entities that have the money to host their own services. Quoting from their about page:

Our principles are fairly straightforward: the world should not be run on money, should be rooted in solidarity, community, mutual help, equal rights and freedom, and social justice. Easy, isn’t it?

We support individuals, collectives, communities and groups whose political and social activities fit within this worldview and who share with us some fundamental principles: anti-fascism, anti-racism, anti-sexism, anti-militarism.

On top of that, one has to share our basic attitude towards money and the capitalistic world: a deep feeling of uneasyness and unrest.

I installed Chromium and created a webapp. If firefox will ever support webapps for linux I will switch.

There is an extension that you can install on Firefox and fork friends:

https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/pwas-for-firefox/

https://pwasforfirefox.filips.si/

You will need to install a companion app on your OS. On Linux, it's available on all the major distro families. I use the Arch-based EndeavourOS, so I just installed it via the official Arch repos.

There is a small set up process but you are then able to install web apps easily!

Oh, nice. Thx I will try it. :) Hopefully I can ditch chromium with that. That would be awesome.

Yeah, that would be great! Firefox is a good choice, but you also have LibreWolf (more private OOTB, the antifinger printing is a bit strict though), Zen Browser (which uses vertical tabs and has a lot of unique features), and Floorp (quite customisable).
