Found a rendering glitch in Monaspace Argon with Cyrillic characters
10d 13h ago by lemmy.world/u/JayAndrewBoy in typography@lemmy.caHi everyone,
I've been checking out the Monaspace font family lately, which seems really interesting. It has five unique styles and a solid approach to variable width and provides support for Cyrillic, Greek, and Vietnamese characters. Overall, the design is super neat and looks awesome.
However, I think I've found a minor bug in the form of a glitch that causes distortion and incorrect rendering.
While reviewing the Argon style in FontLab, I noticed a rendering error. There appears to be an issue with the variable font regarding the following:
- The Cyrillic lowercase letter ҳ (Kha with descender) in italic
- The Cyrillic lowercase letter х (Kha) in normal

I tried to fix it on my end, but it was difficult without breaking the interpolation.
It would be best to inform the creators of this font about this issue so they can look into it and hopefully resolve it, improving the font for everyone.
Sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for reading!
Yes, I think informing the creator would be the best course of action.
Are you sure the glitch is present in the final fonts, and not an artifact of converting it to fontlab format when opening it? Or was the source files fontlab files already?
I'm pretty sure it's in the source fonts themselves and not an artifact of the FontLab conversion. I checked the repo builds, and Argon Wide shows up across TrueType (TTF), OpenType (OTF), and variable fonts.
If needed, you can check it directly here.
If the glitch is present when using the fonts, I think it would be helpful to report it. But not if you only see it in font lab. The source files seem to be Glyphs files. If you open ttf in any font editor you can’t be certain all things are showing up intact, even if most things will.
If you care about the font and want to contribute I’d dig deeper to make sure the issue is real and then report it.
