12 year old account permanently banned. First post on lemmy :)
9d 21h ago by ani.social/u/amnesiaftw in redditYeah like everyone else here… Venting about how shitty Reddit is. In the last 2 years I’ve been getting 7-day bans every few months for the dumbest things. Seriously ridiculous how relatively unoffensive my comments are. Half of which were bot bans. This last time I decided to use my alt account during a ban and got my main account permanently banned. Submitted an appeal but I don’t have high hopes and even if they lift it, fuck them. Not to mention individual sub bans for simply joining other subs or having a link to my OnlyFans on my profile. I’ve had enough.
I got a site wide permaban for saying Putin should be executed for war crimes.
On r/ukraine
you have been murdered for saying Netanyahu should be executed for war crimes.
Netanyahu should be imprisoned and tortured for war crimes.
You should generally avoid showing support towards Europe under TrumpZ administration. Weak Europe will not be able to help US in the future and they all know this. Focus on strengthening China and Russia instead so that they can take on US once Trump has finished robbing and destroying it
EDIT: I did not this was needed, but /s obviously. Trump is a traitor.
/s?
Isn't "TrumpZ" an obvious hint?
I sort of assumed but it could've been a typo. People seemed upset so there was a chance I was missing something.
If we stop speaking up then we lose our ability to speak up.
Forums are for ppl to express themselves. We don't have to agree with everyone to respect their opinions
BLOP DE DOP
I'm not sure if you missed the sarcasm, but I wasn't making fun of you. I got banned for similar reasons and I'm from the East
I stand corrected. Always us an /s though. Sarcasm is hard to recognize on the internet as there is plenty of lunatics, Lemmy being no exception.
I beg to differ, unmarked sarcasm has the side effect of ragebaiting the less hinged of us, if done well - Starship Troopers wouldn't be ¼ as good as it is if every scene ended with an actor saying "by the way, this is meant to be satire, we don't actually like hypermilitarism"
I originate from 4chan. I'm still learning.
I've repeatedly gotten away with that (actually, saying that as a terrorist he should be taken out in whatever way makes sense) - but recently I think I got a 7-day ban for it. Moderation is remarkably inconsistent.
I got a 3 day ban for a really innocuous comment. Done by "AI", of course... I was so annoyed that I didn't even appeal it and just deleted my account. Should have done it way before, of course. Haven't been back in 3 weeks. All I said was that Elron Musk hates poor people, and their shit AI said that was threatening harm to someone. Okay.
For something run by a greedy little pigboy, that checks out. Can't have the poors criticizing those defenceless billionaires and harming their reputation, now can we?
Got my 7yo account banned for not verifying my mail.
Created a few more accounts with temporary mails, got banned by 'unauthentic activity'. Then I gave up all and begun to use lemmy. I try to interact on everything to create engagement
Welcome
Nice to have you here :)
Welcome!
I got a 2 month ban on worldnews in a thread about Tesla stocks going to shit and Elon Musk crying about it. My comment was "Hahaha, may he suffer" and apparently that is harassment and inciting violence.
This the same world news that is purportedly modded by Ghislaine Maxwell?
I got banned - after 13 years - for reporting hate speech.
Turns out that is “report abuse”.
lol u probably reported a mod or something smh
Maybe. Or just fuckwits weaponising a badly designed system to control the narrative.
Hi, welcome! Sooooo, maybe this is new info. Maybe this you already know. Either way, as a Lemmy newbie, allow me to fill you in on some lingo and details around here.
So, subreddits are called communities, but it's the same thing.
What's not the same is the core functionality. Lemmy has potentially an infinate amount of servers. I say potentially because you can start your own Lemmy server right now.
These servers are called "instances". It's just a server where you can host your own lemmy account, or your own communities.
So, you can do whatever you want on your instance. You can tell all your friends to join your instance. I could sign up for an account and be hosted by your instance.
Now I'm not saying you need to do that, or even that you should do that. I'm just saying you can. It's possible.
Now, let's talk federation.
Think of each instance as a circle. Now imagine a line connecting two circles. That connection between the two circles means they are "federated", or connected. You as a user on an instance can interact with all other federated instances. This is why you'll see topics on lemmy.world and users hosted lemmy.ml.
Lemmy.world and Lemmy.ml are two different instances, but they are federated. So Lemmy.ml users can interact with Lemmy.world communities/topics/users.
Your instance is ani.social. I'm not firmiliar with which instances you're federated with. Clearly federated with Lemmy.World.
But imagine you found a problematic instance. Like what if you found somethink like nazis.online for an instance. You might want to cut ties with them.
So now imagine that line between ani.social and nazis.online is cut. You don't want to talk to nazis, and neither does anyone on your instance. So ani.social defederates from nazis.online, and now the nazis can't see, nor interact with you, or any communities on your instance.
However, user@nazis.online can still ineract with Lemmy.ml, and ani.social can still interact with lemmy.ml. So you still may see users on other instances that you're both federated with. In that case, you can block user@nazis.online.
And Lemmy.World, and Lemmy.ml are both Lemmy. But you may see users from an instance called piefed. What is piefed? Well it's a totally different service, with its own instances, with its own communities, run by different people that can still federate with Lemmy and other instances within the fediverse. But how is this possible?
Well, the fediverse is all services that use something called activitypub. Now, I'm a bit out my own element in knowing the finer details, but the over simplified version is that if a service uses activitypub, it CAN be part of the fediverse. I say "can" because I've been told that bluesky does run activitypub, but they choose to limit their own federation to just bsky.app. Meaning there are no other bluesky instances, and no other service is federated with bluesky, even though they totally could federate with mastodon.
Bluesky is almost a 1:1 carbon copy of pre-musk twitter. Mastodon is more pre-musk twitter inspired, but also fully part of the fediverse.
Bluesky has limited interaction with mastodon. I've never tried it, despite having both a bluesky and mastodon account. I've heard you need to bridge the accounts, and it's a whole thing. So I never bothered. I hear it's clumsy, and not worth it.
And there's a whole bunch of fediverse services.
Lemmy/piefed are like reddit.
Peertube is like youtube.
Loops is like tiktok.
Pixelfed is like instagram.
Friendica is like facebook.
And when I say all this, there's one giant elephant in the room we haven't addressed yet. Corporate interests.
Lets say you're still on X for some god awful reason. Well, you probably notice that they push their own agenda on you. They make money by getting you to follow the agenda. On the fediverse, there are no owners.
Like I said earlier, you can run your own instance. If Sony wanted to advertise on Lemmy, it would be damn near impossible. Because they could advertise on Lemmy.World, but only Lemmy.World users would see the ad. Because when you interact with Lemmy.World, you personally are not on Lemmy.World. You're on Lemmy.World via Ani.social. So you're actually browsing all this from Ani.Social. You never actually leave there. And if you try to go directly to Lemmy.World, you'll find you're not logged in. Because they have no login credentials for you. But if you go back to Ani.Social, you'll find things just as you left them. Still able to interact with Lemmy.World but still technically browsing Lemmy.World via Ani.Social.
I know thats a lot to throw at a newbie, but I promise it's only complicated in the begining. Once you get it, it's like second nature.
One last thing, despite being called the "fediverse", there's no need to worry. It has nothing to do with Kevin Federline.
Bsky uses atProto, not activitypub. From what i got its an awful protocol because they reinvented some things and added cryptography to the point that they are in control of moderation.
The defederated part is only the place where userdata is stored, everything else like algorithms is in the hands of bsky.
If one wants to get control of an "instance" they need to make a second competiting bsky basically.
But Threats has activitypub. I mean like every Masto instance defederated because its very much influencers & stuff.
Some defederated instantly because its Meta, but after months even the ones who tried to accept them felt spammed with trash
Thanks so much for this!! It’s a lot but It all makes a lot of sense. So to see stuff ani.social is not federated with, I’d need to make another account on a different instance?
That probably explains why I couldn’t post nsfw content. I think ani.social is not federated with the nsfw instances.
ani.social might use an allow list instead of a deny list?
at the bottom of the desktop webside you can click on "instances" to see https://ani.social/instances
it currently only blocks Threads.net and allows 5 with "nsfw" like lemmynsfw.com.
Maybe look into your account settings if spoilerd/nsfw content is allowed
This... is a lot. How necessarily is it to know all this? Could probably pare it down quite a bit.
at the start it could be confusing/scared enough to make people leave.
But after the first steps its really good to know about how instances and their (de)federation works to find places that fit the user.
Knowing that the fediverse offers more than "reddit" is neat
That about that bsky is not part of the fediverse is probably mostly useful for mastodon users. I mean there is wafrn that can support booth but that a bit niche for new users
maybe its better to link videos like https://tube.sekretaerbaer.net/w/no5VtUKR2DWtxJ4iEeiXPTinstead of trying to explain purely with words how it words
I had to go shortly after the "He gets us" Jesus ads made their appearance.
We need to make a “He gets us (pregnant)” parody.
Jesus loves me. Jesus is inside of me. But he’ll probably be done soon because he just shouted, “Come all ye faithful!”
Jesus gets us - pregnant.
(Note: I have no idea what the original ad looks like.)
AI mods, and increasingly AI content, they're making it a training ground for what they can get away.
It will become more like Facebook.
It’s already Facebook. Just look at it for a few seconds without signing in or adblockers. Short form video and picture posts with stupid engagement by bots ad nauseum.
Almost every political post is the daily beast, which is basically a tabloid.
The amount of bullshit that gets upvoted even though it’s categorically wrong because the bubble says “nuh uh I heard something else and I believe it!” is crazy.
Plus all the “user review” ad spam everywhere. I don’t trust anything on there from the past few years because of it. Sucks.
I heard they're getting rid of r/all so that they can have more control over your feed.
Two weeks shy of 15 years and got permabaned last October.. Sniped by a bot. Oh well. Found old.lemmy.zip a few days later, signed up and learned how to sub to the communities on other instances and have never looked back.
Am not even angry about it anymore, since it's waaay more laid back and chill here. Like Reddit was before 2012 or so.. Do a lot more reading, which has brought my game up and also, no rage-bots.. so that alone is pure delight.
Welcome to the party, it's low-key but once you find your groove, and learn to sub across the various instances.. it's a blast!
Yeah I’m hoping I don’t get the urge to go back there. Just gotta fill the void with lemmy and/or touch more grass
Find the right handful of commuities and you will not even think of going back.
Honestly.
I’m already having trouble posting nudes on here lol. I can’t join the nsfw instance and my post won’t submit I think cuz I originally joined a sfw instance. It’s ok. I’ll figure it out
Here by choice not by force. I left Reddit when they chose to fuck up by abandoning the API for Ads. Haven't missed Reddit one bit. If you aren't already, you'll be happy somewhere in the federation. Sorry about losing history, hopefully you are okay with your transition to the future.
Thanks. Already started deleting all my posts and comments. It’s gonna take weeks I’ll do like 50 at a time. I downloaded software that makes it like 2 seconds to do 50 posts/comments a day.
You should know deleting reddit comments by clicking Delete doesn't really delete them, it just marks them with a deleted flag so they don't appear in the UI. The text is still there, available for internal use. So if your goal is to eliminate the use of your contributions, there are automated deleters that work by Editing comments, replacing them with gibberish before deleting them. Then all reddit has is the latest edit (gibberish), not the history. Not sure if Redact does that, but there are lots of them.
Thanks. Yeah I read about that. I suppose I should convert them to gibberish first. If it’s a free service I’ll do that. Otherwise im content just deleting them normally (with automated software). I used Redact and something else last night but I think the free version of Redact only lets u delete the last month.
And there's always just letting go of it and walking away, instead of letting it eat up any more of your time with little or no gain.
I lost my 11y account for the audacity of song lyrics that a random mod classed as hate speech. It had a rude word 😑.
Fuck them. It's thankfully more authentic here and a lot less bots. I've yet to see a haiku.
Shame you didn't get banned for exposing a pedo ring. Yes they call that one harassment
Badge of honour.
Welcome to the real world, Neo.
Dude, I feel you. Welcome from a fellow Reddit expat. Right after the Inauguration, Musk had a meeting with Spez, and they permabanned an unknown, but enormous number of people, including me, with a 12 year account, and a million Karma.
People like you and me were on Reddit when NOBODY knew who they were. We BUILT that site, made it the active conversational free speech site it was supposed to be, until they started getting heavy handed, and then went full MAGA for the second round.
You'll find Lemmy is a LOT more forgiving for political speech, although some instances and subs still have some stupid mods.
There aren't nearly as many niche forums as Reddit, which is too bad, and there isn't nearly as much engagement. You won't be getting thousands, or even hundreds of upvotes. Dozens, maybe. Often none.
On the other hand, you don't get anywhere near the amount of nonsense you have to put up with at Reddit. The other day I checked out a post that came up in a search, and had to bail because I couldn't get through the dozens and dozens of pun posts, totally irrelevant tangents, bots, novelty accounts, etc. I never did reach any actual conversation about the subject. It was so much worse than 18 months ago, and it was already bad then.
MAGA has obviously discovered the power of Reddit, and destroyed it. They haven't found Lemmy yet.
Welcome aboard!
Can't wait for the day Reddit advertisers finally realize they're advertising mostly to bots. I'm building up my stockpile of popcorn to watch the shitshow.
The API price increase and Apollo shutting down was my breaking point with Reddit.
Right after Melon Husk bought Twitter, I posted something about Howard Schultz (CEO of Starbucks) while he was questioned about his anti-union activities in front of Congress. I wanted to slap the smile off his face into next Tuesday. That got me a 7 day ban. I didn't log in for a month. When I came back, my feed was just as nasty. I moved everyone I followed to Mastodon if they had an account. Same with Facebook. That was over 2 years ago. When BlueSky started using their posts for LLMs, I deleted my account.
Mom told me this story about a little old man that a reporter saw praying against the Western Wall (of the original Temple) in Jerusalem. The man was there for over a week during the morning and afternoons. The reporter wanted some insight into this man's devotion, so he asked him about it.
The old man pondered the question then said "In the mornings, I come and pray for peace. Then I have a bit of a nosh and come back in the afternoon I pray again for peace."
"Well, given what's happening right now, what's that like?" asked the reporter.
"It's like talking to a wall." said the old man sadly.

NSFW sub bans are the worst. Last I heard most reddit content moderators/admins that were taking care of NSFW subs went overseas or quit due to crushing work hours and having to constantly see shit that makes people's stomachs turn, even in the softcore subs some of the nastiest shit gets posted and removed.
I used to moderate REGULAR SFW spaces on both Reddit and Discord and let me tell you, the stuff people post is insane. They post straight out terrorist and cartel executions like it is nothing... and that is ignoring the ones who post rapes, tortures, murders, etc. I can only imagine how bad NSFW spaces are. If you do not have an iron-stomach, I would never recommend moderating spaces with millions of people on it.
Yeah, fuck them. My account over there is a bit older than yours was and it's been hit with 2 3 day bans recently for "threatening violence" for posts which clearly were not threatening violence. I hope they were by bots, because God save us all if real people with reading comprehension at that level have been given authority of any kind. They don't pay any attention to the appeals so I just insulted the admin staff in the last one.
I am not YET permanently banned on Reddit, even though I have been temporarily banned a few times. I am moving away to PieFed though... but I find it difficult to get engagement without the ability to have crossposts link back to the main post. I am just sick of Reddit and their behaviour. They arbitrarily ban people and then refuse to ban literal terrorists and people who keeps going on mass-shootings were radicalised on Reddit, which got them investigated by the Department of Justice BOTH back during the Biden-era and the current Trump-era. I may often not agree with the Threadiverse politically and get into my fair share of debates (I have an older account that I cannot find on Lemmy that I made in 2023- but whatever since I like PieFed more), but Reddit is just THAT BAD where they somehow make both the left and right investigate them. Bruh. They are just dogwater, which is an insult to dogwater. 😭
Welcome. Get ready to realize just how dogshit reddit is (both the userbase and the policies). Try to let go of any maladaptive habits you don't need anymore (self-censoring, treating all argumenters in bad faith, or anything else you've needed to do to survive reddit); this is an opportunity to start anew.
I also had a 12 year account that got banned. I do miss some of the more specialized subs, but I enjoy the casual scrolling here.
I had a reddit alt that disappeared for what seemed like 2 years, then all of a sudden I was able to find it and access it again. 🤔 I stopped posting over there around the time of the API blackout and now I have a whole process of sites I go through before I cave and check if something is on reddit.
Deets on the other sites you use?
individual sub bans for simply joining other subs
This is nucking futs.
Welcome aboard! About a year ago my 11 year old Reddit account was banned. I don't even know why I was banned since I'd lost access to the email account I used to create the account long ago. For a day or two I was just really confused why I couldn't log in anymore.
Oh well, Reddit had been on a down hill trajectory for a while, but I do miss some of the smaller niche subreddits I used to frequent. We'll eventually have communities like that as Lemmy, PieFed, etc continues to grow.
At least I feel I'm not engaging with endless bots here
Haha thanks me too
Welcome! I hope you enjoy Lemmy :)
My perma ban was liking a comment. Turns out that goes against rule 1.
It was a comment making fun if R1 under a security video of a therapist abusing an autistic child.
Greetings! Hope you like your stay!
If you'd like to also explore options, there's Mastodon for followinf Twitter-like posts (and also PixelFed, NeoDB, WordPress, etc.), Friendica and Mbin for following both Twitter and Reddit-like posts, and PieFed as a direct alternative to Lemmy specifically.
And tip, Lemmy has a native per-post, post-hiding feature, at the 3 dots of a given post. Mastodon has too, and most softwares I've tested work well with Ublock Origin filters and/or scripts for hiding posts (e.g. if liked/disliked).
I hope you already edited all of your comments and posts
I'm not banned but I haven't participated much there for a couple of years.
I've heard that Fediverse wasn't much better, but the fact that Lemmy, Piefed, Mastodon and pretty much any other Fediverse platform are open source, and completely ridden of ads, and data collection from giant corporations is already a HUGE difference.
Sure people are just people and you're gonna find toxic communities everywhere, but at least here you don't need to "fear" getting banned because you can choose an instance that has core principles you share, and through them you can access pretty much any community you want, and keep active.
On Reddit, you have no other place to go. You either shut the fuck up and accept their terms, or you, if you get banned, there's nothing you can do about it.
Also, a lot of communities here in Lemmy/Piefed are very active. I don't need to be drowned on an infinity number of posts when most of them are just silly repetitive memes or karma whoring, with zero meaningful discussion.
It makes you think... Is there a part of the population that never says "fuck" and somehow they make enough money to whatever reddit does to get that money? Oris anyone so well behaved that they will never be banned? Like if they start talking like resists then these people too will talk like racists?
Nah nah. I accept that a great part of the population is stupid dumb as fuck. But nah nah man... Reddit has bots. That's what makes more sense.
I was never banned.
I quit when the API bullshit happened. I havent been back, and I dont want to go back. We will never regain the community that was stolen (not lost). But - we can create another one here.
I've been in many heated discussions and never been banned. I curse a lot too. I'm a bit suspicious of OPs claim that he was inoffensive but also getting week long bans on a regular basis.
You can swear on reddit
My wildest permaban was for a Garyy Tan supporting Cop loving dog shooting another dog, this was detected as threatening violence (or something) a human overturned the obviously ludicrous 7-day ban and then a bot made it permanent.
Mods have never been great on reddit (the number of True, 2, slightly different spellings) subs are largely a result of legitimately bad moderation.
But the admins have gotten so much worse recently (not that they've ever been great either: Doxxing trans coworkers to alt-right led subs & banning me for forwarding that someone was trying to dox a mod).
I'm still on their to prevent my local sub going even further right as the rest of Reddit does but I really only engage in that sub now.
Yeah r/offmychest is really bad and I went over to the true version.
Interestingasfuck is terrible and there’s one called intrestingasfuck.
It used to be power mods that were bad and now it’s a combo of humans and bots
I got a seven day for mocking a racist and never looked back
What took you so long?
I’m slow
Welcome. I also was banned for pointing out some dumb shit on a conservative subreddit. They really have such thin skin.
Welcome! Don't hesitate to ask question or community (lemmy's equivalent for subreddit) recommendation.
Idk your taste but let my introduce you to superbowl@lemmy.world nevertheless. Great content both fun and full of learning possibilities and objectively better that its Reddit conterpart. Enjoy!
Been there. Some of biggestlaughs were onthat site. /r/startrek mod got me,fuckin loser.
Welcome!
Welcome to the party pal! Honestly, it feels like old reddit here and I love it!
Spoiler alert: it’s not much better here.
Okay, it’s not as bad, but you’ll find plenty of over-strict civility rules and political bias in moderators. Reddit is just further down the development chain and perhaps nudged to be a bit more PC due to advertisers. You’ll find the same basic problems here though.
We shall see. My problem is that I never said anything bad. I feel like anywhere else, the things I was banned for would be a non-issue. So far though, I like Lemmy. Seems active and fresh… for now
Anecdotal experience, admittedly, but I started out thinking this place was better too. And it was, for a time. I wasn’t getting cited or banned for the same types of comments as I was on Reddit. It seemed legitimately better. Then I started disagreeing with people on this platform, and BOOM, comment removals, bans, same as Reddit, just geared towards different political views. I realized that while Reddit protects the mainstream, Lemmy protects leftist views, and in some cases far leftist views. The super-left extremists are largely confined to extremist instances, but Lemmy.world is plenty extreme itself, just in more muted ways.
I consider myself a leftist, but one with an appreciation for moderate-left sensibilities. For example, I support socialist political platforms, but not at the expense of moderate liberal institutions. Sometimes, that’s not okay here. I support Palestinian rights, but objections to calls to destroy Israel will sometimes get you in trouble here. I support gun reform, but if you defend the 2nd amendment in any capacity, you’re liable to get targeted. Lemmy is not a place that defends a middle ground. The fights between communities are between different forms of leftism, but they all lean Left; if you have any centrist views, you’re going to be targeted.
Recently I got a 7-day reddit ban for encouraging violence - tbh I don't know exactly what I said because all they would do is give me a link to the deleted comment, which was deleted, but it was in the Ukraine War sub and I'm pretty it was for saying I wished somebody would take out Putin. Banned for enouraging violence, upon the enemy leader in an ongoing war. That's a mighty high ethical bar you got there, sheriff.
Yeah, I got permanently from Reddit too, I had a 6 years long Reddit account
What did u do or didn’t do to get banned?
I had an account that was prob 10 years old at the time. After Trumps 'shooting' during the campaigns I just posted on an article about the fireman that allegedly died from a GSW. Just said 'Damn Corey, was your Nazi rally really worth showing the world your brains?'
How many on posts about Israel?
None. I almost never talk about politics.
I got two by autobot on Israel genocide.
Funny I had a 15 year account and was never once banned from anything, ever.
I swear the threadiverse is a remote island made up of 50% idealists and 50% convicts.
I think when ur banned once, ur flagged and it’s easy to get banned again. The very first time I was banned it was because of an argument I had with another user. We ended up calling each other names and were both banned. Ok fair. But from then on, I got banned for inciting violence and for hate speech for such minute comments. Like i would’ve been surprised if they simply deleted my comment, let alone ban me for 7 days. Meanwhile half the other comments are much worse than whatever I said. I dealt with the 7 day reprieves fine until today when I practiced “ban-evasion” which was enough to ban me forever. It’s my fault. Bottom line is I shouldn’t have said Asian male prostitutes were cheap. Smh
