Federation issues
7d 10h ago by piefed.social/u/QuadratureSurfer in piefed_help@piefed.socialI noticed a post on Lemmy.world that is having issues federating with PieFed.social on the AskLemmy@lemmy.world community:
https://sh.itjust.works/post/61606993
https://lemmy.ml/post/48556708
I attempted to retrieve the original post. Which seemed to bring it over, except there were no comments attached to the post.
I attempted to retrieve the comments using the direct comment link, but PieFed would return a "post not found" error banner when entering that into the "retrieve remote post" field. I had read somewhere that this field could be used for comments as well . (Note this was all attempted before the post was eventually "locked").
Even an hour later there were a few more comments added, but on PieFed it is showing 4 comments, while viewing on Lemmy.world shows 25 comments.
Edit: I don't have any languages selected in my language settings, so I should be able to see all posts/comments regardless of the language.
Edit 2: Looks like 2 of the comments have now federated over (I don't think it's normal to take up to 2 hours for federation?). Still missing a third.... But now the original post looks to have been deleted.
Edit 3: updated with a new asklemmy post that isn't showing up on PieFed now.
Edit 4: updated numbers for newer post, that's 1 hour old now.
Lemmy.world had some issues earlier today but it has resolved itself now. Below is a graph showing up many activities lemmy.world had queued up to send to us.

The slopes are unusually jagged, normally when things get blocked up it's a smooth steady line. Maybe they were doing some configuration experiments.
When the cause is something at our end then it would effect all instances, not just lemmy.world.
Hi, where can I find this federation monitoring tool?
Well, that definitely explains the issues I was seeing today. Thanks for sharing the graph!
OP deleted their post in the meantime. It probably should have worked when you first tried to pull it, but a "not found" will be correct now.
Btw I don't know if comments get fetched. I think retrieving posts only fetches the post itself, not the attached comments.
Yeah, I just updated the post to point to a new one in asklemmy that isn't federating.
It looks like I should have been able to fetch comments using that retrieve remote post field as well, however that does not seem to be working:
Copy that link from the post/comment on lemmy and then paste it into the form on feddit and it should go fetch the post/comment for you and backfill it. A caveat is that votes are not fetched, so scores will just be at 1. Also, fetching a comment will fail if it is a response to another comment that hasn’t been fetched yet.

A quick example of what I see when trying to retrieve missing comments:
