I love that pixel art and thoughtful, vintage-looking games have made such a huge comeback. Say what you will about Steam, but there are so many indie or solo-developed gems out there that have proliferated due to its popularity.
I am not as big as a fan of Steam as most, but we did get lucky that Valve aren't as scummy as most large business entities in gaming.
It could have been way worse, that being said, I think even if the big players initially came to dominate digital distribution (ans ignored indie devs), a competitor would have filled the need in the market.
