Ike wanted to reform the Republican Party into a sane and 'mature' participant in social democracy. Unfortunately, it didn't last.

Yeah he’d be laughed off the stage at CPAC as a woke libtard with that kind of wholesome, common sense craziness.
he was the last of his kind.
I remember working the polls with a bunch of oldies about a decade ago, and they were all conservatives except for two of us. Myself (the youngest there, in my 20s, and even then, a pretty left-leaning Berniecrat), and a very kind fellow who was ancient, and described himself as a "Liberal Republican" and noted "I didn't leave the Republican Party, the Republican Party left me", along with some bitter comments on Reagan.
I didn't have much opportunity to chat (and I'm not that social to begin with), but I felt for that poor fellow.
hate-fueled reactions to civil rights movement and legislation in the 60s, stirred up by goldwater and nixon, then embraced by reagan and those that followed. definitely changed the party. problem is, the democrats also shifted towards that new gap in the spectrum.. leaving nothing left on the left.
Yep. Unfortunately, in particular, Clinton's victory in the 90s, after a series of stunning defeats against neoliberal fuckheaddery in the 80s, really set us back at a time when the Republicans were radicalizing further.
