Adding communities from other instances.
3y 21d ago by feddit.ch/u/_Frog in askswitzerland@feddit.chFor everyone in here wondering about the missing communities from other instances, i hope to give you some insight.
Each lemmy instance, like this one, acts as an server for multiple communities, posts and users. You can create a user, which lives on a specific instance and browse different communities through an instance.
Normally, you only see communities from your local instance. If you're interested in other communities, you can look them up on the lemmy community browser (thanks to feddit.de) and later type in the link to a post or community into the search on the top right. it always took me two tries to add a community, maybe a later update does this better.
After you found your community through this instance, you can subscribe to it with your user and create your personal frontpage.
You may not see all the posts and comments after you added the community. This seems to be normal behavior.
Thanks for the guidance. Regarding your last paragraph about not seeing all the posts and comments in a community outside of my “home” instance — is that permanent or will the missing posts eventually appear? I’m seeing this in a community I’m subscribed to and I’m missing nearly all the posts that have been made in it while viewing through “my” instance.
Great question, as far as i could make out, they should appear eventually. The ActivityPub protocol does an initial sync of about 20 posts and the rest will be synced later on. For me, the posts of subscribed communities did show up a couple of hours later. Hope this helps.
How do I get a community to show up on the Lemmy community browser so that people can find it? Thank you!
For your community to show up in the community browser, you have to wait. For our feddit.ch communities to show up in the browser, i had to wait for about a day. Maybe they will show up faster if they were linked from other instances, but i would suggest to wait for a bit.
Why is everyone on a Swiss server on a Swiss sub speaking...English?
