Commodore announces Linux-based flip phone with ‘no social media, no browser’ — the Callback 8020 will be available in five retro colorways starting at $499, runs 99% of Android apps
1d 12h ago in linux@lemmy.ml from www.tomshardware.comThey literally don’t make any anymore? Interesting. What about dumb phones that just have the bare necessities?
Oh no not running Linux. But if your intent is to avoid running sophisticated apps, why do you need Linux on your phone ?
This is a joke or satire, no? Who the F would pay that much for a flip phone. You can get them for free can’t you?
How do I get rid of this stupid freaking thing?

11d 11h ago in linux@lemmy.mlI loved the ease of batch files in DOS - I guess it’s mostly because I used them since the early 90s in abundance. I haven’t yet gotten around to learning the best equivalent in Linux.
What WM or DE are you using now?
11d 14h ago in linux@lemmy.mlI really don’t have a single favorite. I use them in situations where they’re the most suitable for my needs and my personal preferences. I think overall KDE/Plasma is the most versatile and flexible, customizable and theme-able. Pantheon is simple and polished, though you’ve got to install the extensions and tweaks; I really don’t know what the devs think with having no minimize button. It’s like a weird fetish that they force on all new installs. But once you add the extras, it’s a beautiful and simple interface. Bodhi’s Moksha is very weird but has its own charm. Also customizable beyond what most people even would know what to do with, but the thing I like most about the distro on the whole is it will run on lower end systems and yet still offer the kind of GUI that usually demands better resources. None of the others I’ve tried run as smoothly on equivalent low end hardware. So that’s its biggest advantage.
Like I said, each for their own scenario.
Using a few on different systems. KDE Plasma on one laptop my high end one that is pretty much my main daily machine. I also have Moksha on a Bodhi netbook. I have an ElementaryOS install so that’s running Pantheon. And finally, I have the Gnome / “Cosmic” in Pop - though I’ve yet to see it be much more than just a finely tuned Gnome.

15d 13h ago in linux@lemmy.ml from gardinerbryant.comNah, that’s not what I mean. I’m not opposed to those things, I guess I just think that things should get the time and attention based on how important they are. I agree that these things would be nice, but I don’t think the developers are deliberately keeping these things the way they are out of a sense of honor and tradition; rather I’ve just figured they always have something that’s more pressing to focus on.
This drivel - okay not entirely, but I’m making a point - is all the wrong attitudes. “People like Windows, let’s make Linux more like Windows so people will accept it.”
We are not in a popularity contest. Linux is great - nay, extraordinary, phenomenal - because it has most of its shit together. Priorities, functionality, efficiency. If most people are not up to the task of learning something, that’s their problem. And yeah, that’s most people. In case the author of this article hadn’t noticed, the vast majority of people are, unfortunately, lazy and stupid. I’m not saying it’s always their faults but that’s not the issue. We don’t lower ourselves down to meet them where they are. If Linux remains only a tiny portion of the ecosystem, and needs to keep being the thing for only geeks (translation, got good grades in school, enjoy learning things, challenge themselves, etc.) then why does there seem to be this perception that that needs to change? Quite the opposite; the small bit of mainstream corporate elements that have become involved have only demonstrated they’ll immediately enshittify it, because that’s what they do.
Let Linux continue to be the fringe ecosystem for geeks. Why do we need morons to enjoy using it? Why is this a problem?
