Waterproof backpacks?
6h 33m ago in buyitforlife@slrpnk.netIf you don't mind the tactical look you can't go wrong with Savotta. It's a Finnish brand that makes outdoor gear for hikers and the Finnish army. All made in Europe. Check out Jääkäri S or Niukka 20L for example. Guranteed BIFL.
Sold at Varusteleka for example.
How much of your salary do you spend on your basic needs?
9h 40m ago in asklemmySomewhere around 60% I guess. I'm self employed so I don't have a steady income and I'm not sure what it averages to per month. As long as I see my wealth steadily increasing I don't worry too much about it.
Countries should go further to de-anonymize users and regulate behavior on online mainstream social media platforms
16h 46m ago in unpopularopinionWell, I wouldn't go as far as to make it illegal to create an anonymous account, but my anecdotal evidence says that if you want people to behave and for those who don't to actually stay away after they've been kicked, then part of the answer is an account tied to your actual identity (admins have to know, not necessarily users) and a subscription-based bussines model so the users actually have skin in the game and the platform doesn't need to fund itself with ads, thus making users the product.
I'm a paid member on such a platform and you genuinely can't find people acting like obnoxious jerks there even if you go looking. Here finding one takes 20 seconds.
TIL that a recent data leak exposed Peter Thiel's secretive elite "club", Dialog Network
19h 58m ago in til from san.comI don't want to be guessing what you're trying to say here. If you want me to respond then attach a comment to your picture post. Though, if it's along the lines of "these are all pedophile fascists" then I'm not interested in even hearing it.
How dare he stay in contact with a diverse group of people.
Who is/was the biggest jerk in your life?
1d 2h ago in asklemmyIt's not so much that I don't think bad people exist - I just don't believe in them authoring that bad behaviour and then being personally responsible for it as if they could've acted otherwise. I think free will is an illusion - we're victims of our genes and environment. I view "bad people" the way I view a grizzly bear wandering around a neighbourhood: it's a problem that needs to be dealt with but I don't blame the bear for being dangerous as if it could choose not to be. With violent criminals this might mean locking them up, but not as punishment - just to protect others. They're broken people and it's not their fault. If I was in their place I'd act the same way.
This all applies to good people as well btw.
There are a few people who have acted like jerks towards me in the past, but I don't know what those people were dealing with in their lives during that time so I'm not going to dismiss them entirely as a person because of it. Them acting that way is more about them than it's about me anyway. Some people just can't help themselves. I don't want to be around these people but I also don't blame them for it as if they could choose to be otherwise.
TIL that half the visual information from each retina goes to one hemisphere of the brain, rather than one eye per hemisphere
1d 6h ago in til from en.wikipedia.orgI'm no neuroscientist but I don't think this has anything to do with the two hemispheres being separated - it's just how the human mind works. When something happens we come up with an explanation for it that's sometimes factual and sometimes completely made up. These people don't know that they're making it up - they genuinely believe the reason they're giving. We're not comfortable with uncertainty, especially when it comes to our own behavior.
I'm personally one of the people who doesn't believe in free will so these findings make perfect sense to me and are in no way in conflict with my worldview, but I get how hearing about this might make someone else uncomfortable.
There's an uncomfortable amount of similarities between how the human brain and LLMs work.
Next word correlating with the words said before, confidently spreading false information, telling people what they want to hear.. These are by no means unique to LLMs.
You go outside. You see this. What's your reaction?
