So where is the line between an “extreme” example and a “reasonable” example? Is 15 years of imprisonment for stepping on money reasonable to you?

If they didn’t want you to be there, they wouldn’t have a public invitation. Most, for various reasons, are looking for new people to join the community. There are many groups who are closed and invite only, so I wouldn’t worry about intruding on an open invitation.

I’ve personally been to two types. The first is the “House Party” type, where someone hosts at a residential home. I’ve found these to be a bit sketchy because they barely skirt business laws, by accepting required “donations”. And if they’re willing to skirt those laws, what else are they willing to compromise on. The size of the venue is limited so it’s a more casual setting and you’re likely to talk to everyone at least once.

The other type are hosted are at commercial properties and are registered business. These tend to be way more organized and generally have communities that are better equipped to integrate new comers. They usually have staff members monitoring the spaces and will organize smaller clinics that focus on specific topics, like intro to kink and safety.
