Pubs Shut and Streets Close as Police 'Screen Attendees' for Oxford Union Tommy Robinson Debate
16h 12m ago in unitedkingdom@feddit.uk from bylinetimes.comFree speech doesn't mean you have to provide a platform for racists. This does nothing but legitimise him and his racism. The Oxford Union should be ashamed of themselves.
Amnesty International exposed years of anti-trans reporting at four UK newspapers. They ignored it.
16h 59m ago in unitedkingdom@feddit.uk from www.thebureauinvestigates.com"When human rights are under attack the role of the press should be to challenge those in power – not cheer them on."
The British press is mostly just courtiers to the rich and powerful these days.
It's actually a really good metaphor.
More humans could survive with more food if we reused the land growing food for animals for growing food for humans to eat. We would need so much less land that we could rewild a lot of it, and massively reduce the amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere as well.
But people like meat and will react badly to anyone suggesting that eating less is a good idea for everyone.

The social media policy ratchet
2d 14h ago in unitedkingdom@feddit.uk from www.openrightsgroup.orgYes, it would be far better to take the actions presented here - removing lock-in, not allowing malignant algorithms, and splitting up monolithic social media companies. Those are all sensible suggestions that would have a real effect, but with Keir and his party fighting for his political life, it's absolutely unthinkable that they would do anything other than sledgehammer pointless and ineffective - but headline-grabbing, tough guy regulations through. Nuance and reasoning can go fuck itself when you want to get on the front page of the Sun.
