The best games of 2026 so far

5d 17h ago in games from www.theguardian.com

Oh it hammed it up for sure, to me it added to the charm but I can totally get if you weren't expecting it in the setting.

It takes a lot of inspiration from Disco Elysium, which is not subtle at all (and is extremely memorable for it). Having an election be a constant thing that you had to think about was an interesting way to work it into the world imo.

There's an infamous Canadian serial killer, Robert Pickton, who was a pig farmer. Dude's heinous so a bit of a warning if you don't want to read about it.

What's your secret ingredient?

It's not a secret one at all as I based it on some existing seasonings but I've got a lot of mileage out of

  • coarse ground black pepper
  • salt
  • cayenne pepper
  • dill weed
  • coarse ground coriander seeds
  • garlic powder

I don't have any smoked paprika right now or I'd toss that in too. Just grind the spices for a few seconds in a mortar and pestle. I'm pretty generous with the cayenne, say this ends up roughly 1:1:1:2-3:0.5:1 ratio, sometimes I add some red pepper flake too. The seasoning this is ripping off uses dill seed instead of dill weed but hey, use what you have right?

[Discussion] What one small change would you make to a Souls game?

For one, mine would be

Put a bonfire in Lost Izalith

Put a bonfire in Lost Izalith or something like that. Bed of chaos isn't hard I know but on a first play through especially it's a slog to runback. Chaos covenant shortcut is ok but I swear it's still up there in terms of distance.

Larger change would be do something with the area, I love that you can get glimpses of it from other places but it felt so empty when you finally get there.

I think your idea for one could make for some interesting runs for sure, for sure some would rush the dlc, but I think it could help flow too by letting you do less back tracking. Relevant to my above, I think I'd totally go that way after Quelaag.

Yeah I had no idea why that elevator went up to iron keep, even flipping it as like a descent underground or something could be cool too. For me, let me bulk turn in covenant items please, it's just kinda tedious.

ER - more somber/ancient dragon smithing stones. For me, somber is more of an issue, 14 somber in base plus dlc sounds like a lot, and for most people it probably is, but there's a pile of weapons in the game and sometimes it's fun to experiment. I know you can just roll with the +9 just fine, still would be nice to have an option for more, DS 1 and 2 let you farm max upgrade materials so it's not like it'd be new for the series.

Data transfer is a mess afaik, big reason I tend to buy my cables in different lengths, if it's long I know it's for charging, short it's for data. Some manufacturers do mark the cable ends with their capabilities (ugreen for sure does this, just checked my power ones are marked 240w and my data a marked 10Gbps), my stuff is mostly older though so I don't have a bunch of different data speeds to worry about.

I'm with you though, I'll take it over a bunch of different proprietary cables.

Fjord - Barbarians (Epic Heavy Metal)

I use both, debian on servers and old machines, arch on my desktop. Arch being rough is way overblown in my experience, the install script makes it straightforward to setup and it's been pretty much painless since I switched to it two years ago, I had experience with debian before that. Both arch and debian have fantastic documentation available.

Debian and derivatives, in my experience, are really well supported so that's a plus. Age of packages has never really bothered me and cases where I want bleeding edge there's options for that.

Both are solid options and I don't think you'll be upset either way, if you can I'd try both.

Not ideal, but at least I got a lot done today

My partner got me one of these pill popper things (amazon link is the best I could find, sorry) that gets around having to fill it myself. Yeah you have to remember to mark the day but it works well for me, was that or one of those timer lids as there were definitely days I missed doses or weren't sure if I took my meds and didn't want to risk double dosing.

Saw someone describe it as 90s Ferris Bueller's Day Off and that was enough for me to pick it up. It's short yeah but to me it's a good example of games as art. The music choice is integral to the experience, I really enjoyed it and have been gently suggesting my partner play it.

I don't pay attention to the people who yell woke at everything, what's their issue this time?

If you drop (or throw) your new Steam Controller it will scream at you

The og did all of that through haptics, it worked really well. don't see cutouts in the case for a speaker and I didn't see any mention on ifixit, feel like valve would have listed it in the specs.
