An alien civilization that doesn't understand what alcohol is would be very confused as to why there are laws against "underage drinking" or "drinking and driving"

It sounds as if kids aren't allowed to have water

As someone who's not a native english speaker, I was also at one point confused why there are laws about drinking and driving :3

As an autistic anglophone, I was also at one point confused why there are laws about drinking and driving :3

I can't imagine that an alien species would not have something analogous to alcohol that they would understand unless their biology is completely unaffected by what they put in their body. Confusing at first, but probably easily explained.

They would be very confused when coming upon someone's chat log where they said they stop drinking and their health got better.

When I was younger I got upset at my sister drinking fanta while in the passenger's seat, because drinking and driving is bad

Don't drink and drive, you might spill it.

Given their mental capacity is so limited that they have such trouble with the concept of "drinking" I wonder how they managed to travel across the vast distances between the stars to visit Earth.

They might not have a concept of alcohol. They might only know safe beverages. So the idea of drinking beverages being restricted would be weird

I don't think so. I mean, yes, at first, but as soon as you explain to them the effects of alcohol they would get it. In fact, they would probably ask themselves why people drink it in the first place.

I have always thought it would be difficult to explain to an alien why we drink alcohol or smoke cigarettes

With all this AI stuff going on, in a few years it may be true.
