Asbestos really seemed like a miracle material. Its so easy to pull out of the ground and process into anything from tiles to fabric to brake disks. It's abundant, cheap, and easy to mine. In a world where it seemed everything was always catching on fire, asbestos was magically fireproof. It was saving houses and children and housewives from going up in flames if they got too near a stove or fireplace. It was revolutionising industry, making workplaces safer and more efficient. I really don't blame anyone for using it everywhere in those early years.

But greed took over after asbestos products flooded the market and the major health hazards became apparent. The corpos and the govts were too greedy and scared to admit it was dangerous, because that would mean choosing to dismantle a billions-dollar value strong industry and start recalling everything.

Now, if we could block the Suez AND mine the strait of Gibraltar, now that's a spicy global economic stew!

The strait of Malacca isn't an exclusive choke point like the strait of Hormuz or the Dardanelles. Ships can take other routes avoiding belligerent countries in the area. Even the Suez/bab al-mandab isn't an exclusive choke point, because you can still just go all the way around Africa, it's just a pain in the ass.

The Straits of Denmark, Hormuz, and Dardanelles are uniquely strategic choke points because the are the only seaward access points to their respective seas, Baltic, Persian and Black, which are controllable by one country and which other countries rely on.

We found the missing AI apps! And nobody downloads them

I partly vibe-coded what I thought would be a super useful homepage website ( mediaplate.au ), with weather, notepad, to do list, unit conversion, visitor info (up address etc) stopwatch, timer, etc. All widgets adjustable and tabs renamable. it also has a search function where you can quickly search using any of the big engines and exclude AI summaries from the result. Made it for myself, to improve my own productivity. Set it as the default "new tab" page in Firefox.

I don't even use it myself lol. It was my idea, my design, to fit my (perceived) needs, and now it's basically abandonware. I'm not surprised that most other churned out vibe coded apps are solutions looking for a problem.

Strange, that's the exact same posture the US took towards the Soviet Union during the cold war. That sentiment preceded containment.
