Everyone clapped. Someone handed over a hundred dollar bill. The name of that Bill? (Bill Clinton/Benjamin Franklin/Albert Einstein)

Tesla existed before him. He bought the existing company.

No one fucking knew about it. They might have existed and made good products, but people in general are more concerned with trying to save an insurmountable amount for a mortgage instead of trying to shop around for an exclusively electric car. So if you were in the US and searching for an exclusively electric car with barely any charging infrastructure, you might have known about Tesla pre-Musk.

And it wasn’t hindsight; plenty of people saw right through his crap and terrible science from the start. But more people were hoisting him up on a platform, acting like he was a real Tony Stark.

Because people are sick of the world being a pile of shit and we want to believe in the future from the 1950s sci fi novels. We want electric cars and people on Mars, and he seemed to be the one guy that was "I'm rich as shit, and I'm going to get that shit done by dumping my wealth into it, instead of using that money to dump toxic waste into rivers or directly fund further abuses of capitalism".

And the he turned around and directly funded further abuses of capitalism and people are hating him now. Except the assholes, but they were fans of the rich people dumping toxic waste into rivers or directly funding further abuses of capitalism anyway.

yes, thank you captain hindsight. It was nice to have someone building fucking infrastructure and making electric cars seem good.
